you could safely get into the nether by making the portal vertically instead of flat on the ground (relative to the sideways perspective). That way you spawn in on the obsidian and not immediately start falling.

If you think about it, if the ravine had been in the North/South direction it still would have been a ravine, rather than an easy to traverse staircase

I found out it does, I downloaded the mod, it has an anchor for each direction, up, down, north, south, east, west.
