  • 1043. "Skibidi," "polarization," "brat," "demure," "enshittification," and more. You might get whiplash from the vacillating vibes of all the words the dictionaries chose this year. I joined John Kelly, former vice president of editorial at Dictionary.com to romp through all the choices and contenders.

As a word nerd, I just loved this conversation! Thank you for dropping so much knowledge. As annoying as nonsensical words among our youth can be, I do appreciate the bonds they form. Using these words trips up adults and leads to laughter among the taunting young ones. I think it gives them a strange-yet harmless-ego boost. :)
It’s still January, but I might make baseline my word of the year. Between the wild winds of L.A., snowmageddon in the east, leadership changes, and general uncertainty, it’s crucial that individuals maintain a strong baseline. “Baseline” could refer to your health, emotional well-being, or financial security. I aim to service my copywriting clients with a strong baseline amid all of the factors of 2025. Thanks, Grammar Girl and John Kelly, for the fun discussion!

“Kakistocracy” should be government by khaki wearers.

"Cacophony" is from the same root as "kakistocracy."
