Review: Revel Concerta2 M16, sounding good!!

- Revel Concerta2 M16, it’s a two-way, stand mount design with a 6.5 inch (165mm) Micro-Ceramic Composite (MCC) woofer, and a 1 inch (28mm) aluminum dome tweeter that shares tech with the tweeters used in Revel’s high-end Proforma3 speakers tweeters. There’s a large bass port on the M16’s backside, along with sturdy speaker cable binding posts. The impedance is 6 ohms.
The curved side panel cabinet is impeccably finished in automotive black or white gloss paint. The M16 measures 14.75 x 8.6 x 10.76 inches (37cm x 22cm x 27cm). The cloth grilles attach via hidden magnets, nice.

Just bought and hooked up a pair of these M16 speakers - running them through my 16 year old Denon AVR 3805 receiver with 16 year old 14 gauge speaker wire from Monoprice. These speakers are phenomenal, and highly under appreciated. The sound is sweet, full and rich. The bass is surprisingly deep. Beautiful clarity, but it's not aggressive, and more importantly, it's not fatiguing. These speakers definitely open up as you crank them up, the soundstage gets huge - especially if the recording calls for it. But I'm also finding they're surprisingly good at low to moderate listening levels. They don't get muddy or confused. The clarity is still there, just not as expansive or wide open. Definitely more intimate. I'm going to like these for quiet late night music listening sessions as much as blasting them through a movie soundtrack on movie night, or a rock concert recording. ...I bought/preferred these M16 speakers over the KEF R3 and Sonus Faber Sonetto 1's.
I’ve had these speakers for a week now after considering buying the LS50 that the hifi media rave about, all I can say is that they sound amazing, literally bring tears to my eyes
Couldn't agree more! I had a pair of LS50 before I got the revel M16 and prefer the revels for sure 👌🏻
I’m in the same boat right now. As much as I enjoy my LS50s with a REL T9/x I wish they had wider dispersion characteristics of the Revel. Looking to try one soon.
Not sure why these never got a lot of love from web reviewers. I definitely appreciated this review. I had ls50's but ultimately parted ways with them. The M16's are very good bookshelves. Thanks Steve 👍
I just listened to their top shelf tower speakers that run around $20k per pair yesterday at my local audio shop and WOW those speakers really blew me away! They had a dimensionality that I have never heard before.
I really enjoy your reviews. Very relaxing and well presented. Keep up the great work! 😊
It’s really fun to see you review equipment that ranges from cheap to expensive. Best of all your reviews are pretty detailed, fair and accurate. 👍👍
I have also those M16 with 12 inch subwoofer in sealed box. Have to say that subwoofer makes sound so much dynamic and makes those speakers sound so much bigger.
Thanks for the review. Think I’ll try them out
I just got a pair of these to replace a pair of ls50s and my goodness they are amazing!
how they compare vs ls50
@@watermelon1221 I much prefer the sound of the M16s. It's a much bigger, more vibrant sound that really fills my living room. The ls50s sound puny in comparison, to my ears anyway.
@@eggschipsbeanspeassanchez6114 even in the mids/upper mids where ls50 is known to be class leading?
@@watermelon1221I ended up buying the M16s after reading the review of them on the audioscience review website-and I'm so glad I did. U should check it out if u haven't already.
@@eggschipsbeanspeassanchez6114 I did. and they don't compare mids which is what I like best. the problem with that site is highly praised speakers like ls50, r3, svs ultra, rp600m, and sscs5 get terrible scores. neutrality isn't end all be all, yeah you want accurate amp and dac, but wanting color in sound is normal. just like headphones. most popular and best headphones like hd800, he1000, utopia, ether 2, etc are far from neutral. I'm sure revel makes really good speakers but seeing how it targets the harmon response curve, makes me wonder how good the mids are. I've tried headphones that did the exact same thing like nad hp50. the mids and soundstage weren't as good as my akg
Hello Steve, which speakers would you recommend more Revel M16 or Klipsch rp600m for set up with Rega planar 6 + rega brio? Mainly listening to classic rock, metal (goth/doom), pop, some classical and jazz. Budget up to $900 for new pair of speakers...
The in sound from way out. Love it!
@Steve Tllsdaleys Its the album he has resting on the speaker.

Your punctuation is incorrect.
You should more properly have used a semi-colon instead of a comma.
@Steve Tllsdaleys
Simply reminding you to use proper English when critisizing the use of others.
Otherwise, what's the point?
Im lovin my m16s. i will probably have a hard time "upgrading" to anything else.
These are absolutely fantatsic speakers. You need an anmp with a neutral top end and firm grip in the bass to do them justice but oh my, if you do you are in for a treat!!
Between these and triangle titus ez, for pop, folk and rock what should be better?? Thanks
I have the LS50. Also Aon3. Going to acquire a set of these. I heard these next to the larger Revel 106. I prefer the M16. More body and warmer presentation.
As far as good amps for the M16’s, how about either the Arcam S10 or the Rotel A12? Thanks
Revel concerta2 m16/focal aria 906
Which of these is best for listening to the song?
Im interesting that compare too. Pls answer...
I'm into vinyl now, again, but it's still nice to see cd's being talked about with new speaker reviews
I love the KEF speaker stand!
Steve how much of the equipment that you review do you get to keep and how much do you have to send back ? Thanks.
normally they have to send it back but can buy at a discount. How big depends on the reviewer.
If you give a good review they may let you have them !!!! It's very difficult for a reviewer to give a true evaluation as they are relying on companies to keep sending products. They would not want to piss anyone off, that's for sure. When have you heard Steve say the product is crap !! It's the same with John darko he never says it sounds crap. It's called in the pocket of the suppliers. Your better off going to www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php they don't rely on any companies, not even advertising.
@@r423sdex chances are they aren't willing to review said products if the products are too shit.
@@r423sdex i bought smsl m500 based on audioscience i am so dissappointed with the sound comparing to audio interface from blacklion ^ ^
I have the F36 towers from this same Concerta2 series that the M16 is from, and WOW! I don't believe it's possible to do better at this price. In fact, I think you have to spend 2 or 3 times more to get a better sounding speaker.
I'm still waiting to get your impressions of Schiit Aegir with my Zu Omen Mk ii DW's and now .. the Revels and .. How do you feel Revels compare with the Zu's? Inquiring Minds Want To Know. P.S. Try Bobby Darin's "The Capitol Collector's Series" CD... As Long As I'm Singing cut
Hi Steve, always fun, this is the 2nd time you've mentioned , and sound like you don't really want to admit it, that the LS50 sounds small, its a nearfield speaker and in that way, its terrific. But then then there's a real open big scale speaker like these Revels and that's exactly the characteristic of the JBL 530 s. They deliver big and bold scale with that ridiculously amazing horn loaded compression driver with boatloads of articulation and imaging. I'd love to have a side by side listening session with the Revels and JBLs, we still have them available in Cherrywood finish... Cheers, Mario, Shenyang
I have the pleasure of owning both the M16s and 530s and they're much more alike than different, with both imaging very well and offering great separation to go with a smooth and even tonality.
To my ear and in my room the 530s have a touch more treble at the top end and are maybe a bit more clear, while the M16s sound a bit 'bigger' and offer more bass and overall volume (no surprise with the bigger woofer, though the 530 never struggles at normal volumes) with slightly richer mids.
Overall tiny differences really and one won't go wrong with either pair. I greatly enjoy both.
@@KCC46 Hi B H, your reply is a thrill for me, thanks so much. I'm really not surprised to hear you tell me they sound more similar than different. In fact, I just finished a new video about big scale standmounts including the JBL 530 Revel M16 and as a benchmark the Sonus Faber Electa Amator III, and posting it very soon!!! Will send the link when I do.... Cheers, Mario

I like the hidden PS Audio Stellar power Plant! hehehe
Oh, and the Revels look like awesome speakers too
It wasn't hidden previously. Wonder what happened.
It’s definitely a PSAudio Stellar something or other.
Ps audio make overpriced rubbish . Power plant my arse.
@@r423sdex I love my Ps Audio Stellar stack at home! No hate man
Hi, I'm a big fan, all my respect. I currently have a Revel Concerta M16 and I love their sound, do you think it would be a good idea or a considerable improvement to switch to the Polk Audio Leyend L200? I listen to jazz, classical, Cuban music and opera. I really like the details, the acoustic guitars and the holophonic sound. Thank you very much for the reply. greetings
I have considered those Polks as well but after watching numerous video reviews it seemed it would not be a step up. I use the Revel M16s paired with an Emotiva airmotiv sub. Adding the 8” sub makes a huge difference. If you want to listen at more exciting volume levels, the Airmotive 12” is the way to go. We have both. And Emotiva is having a sale now. The 12” Airmotive usually sells for $500. We got it on sale for 350. Huge bargain.
My LSA bookshelves have the same shape cabinets. That seems to be a really good design . Same price too. Probably all the speaker anyone would need
Nice review Steve.
Is this the same brand that makes kit models?
I had an M206 for a while and something about the top end was quite fatiguing. I was under the impression that was kind of the house sound, so I'm surprised to hear these are warm.
I am keeping my LS50 permanently. Love them so much! Even compared with my Klipsch RP-600M. May take them with me to the next dimension.
The two CDs on top hide the view of the cabinet!
These or Dynaudio Emit 20?
I am asking the same :-)
that beastie boys album is great!
Hi Steve. Thanks for the review. What is the speaker cable? Audioqest Type 4?
shkermanshahi no, it’s a mid level Zu Audio cable
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac, Thanks steve. Struggling to get a good pair of speaker cable for LS50 (pumped by two Vidars), Recently tried ELAC sensible, better than many but not satisfactory.
@@shkermanshahi what cable is inside your Kef ls50 ? Is it some super special cable or just plain old copper.
@@r423sdex In any part of the signal path (including what is inside) wires and cables makes a difference. SOTM streamers with silver inside are $300 more expensive than the copper one. Typically speaker wires/cables make the most difference. The less cable you have the better it is . I was using Anticables speaker wires (not cable) the plain old good copper , no shielding whatsoever, 10 AWG in my older system until I bought Kef LS50. It is so bright for that. My left ear gets hurt with some level of brightness ( I call it new Klipsch syndrome :-)). I have all kinds of speaker cables in different price ($16 to $400) in different systems and they sound different. I know profit margin in cable is way higher than any gear, but they sound different in different systems. If you can not hear the differences between 2 cables, good for you. As someone in Axpona told me it is not a gift to hear differences in different gears or cables it is a curse :-). BTW, anti cables sells wire with silver alloy(no copper)as well over $1000 for 3ft. .
@@shkermanshahi not having it, wire makes no difference. What you hear is placebo effect.
you have jewel boxs on top of the speakers wow Steve amazing
I told you about revel speakers each revel speakers wins all the awards as this one does at this time.
Performa3 😜
How about a pair of Concerta2 F35
Sound similar?
Similar to the M16s? I own the M16s and have spent a lot of time with the F35 and yes, they are very similar. The 35 is perhaps the slightest bit sweeter through the mids, maybe due to the 2.5 way design, but it could be in my head. The F35 is a bit more sensitive and digs a bit lower but the M16 has some think low end and I really like them without a sub for 'normal', non-electronic music if you can give them some boundary reinforcement.
I admit I never hear 'soundstage' when I listen to 'Euro '72' or the ABB 'Live @ Filmore' or 'Band of Gypsys' and they are STILL probably my fave albums. or CD's, I have both prefer neither.
PS - just before getting on the computer for this, I was listening to ' Eat a Peach' on my just for fun new project > old ( 1967 ) AR 4 real veneer cabs with totally modern QAcoustics 3010i mid / tweet /crossover and Dayton 6.5in sub bass, total $550. a pair, look and sound very fine to me.
Another 2 way, 6 inch book shelf speaker. Not too many of those in the marketplace.
And they are all better than the competition .

Thanks for your review. I am a fan of Revel speakers and find that they smoke their sister brand, JBL, in accuracy and musicality. The only speaker for less than $1000 I can think of that may be better is the NHT C-3 but you cannot go wrong with either.
Dynaudio speakers piss on the rest.
Thanks for your reply. Harmon International is smart and makes two brands of speakers with two distinct sonic signatures. Our respective comments mean that each of us puts a higher value on different performance characteristics. I value accuracy and tonality, whereas you value efficiency, sound stage, and dynamics. I have by no means heard every JBL speaker but from what I know about the mark generally, they are more similar to the Klipsch speaker mentioned in the review. Neither viewpoint is right or wrong and that is why there are so many different brands of speakers. We also possibly listen to different kinds of music. This is what makes this hobby fun and interesting. To each his own.@
@@armanddimeo6575 My comparison included the characteristics of accuracy and tonality, the K2's were every bit the equal of the Salon's if not better. And the dynamics and sound stage were superior.
The efficiency difference allowed me to use a 40 watt per channel tube amp with the K2's and achieve a satisfying room filling sound level. The Salon's required a 350 watt per channel solid state amp to achieve the same approximate sound level in my listening room with allowances for headroom.
I love both speaker systems and either one would satisfy almost anyone. The Salon's were a couple years older than the K2's which used beryllium drivers for both mid and high frequencies as opposed Salon's aluminum and titanium for the high frequencies and mid range respectively.
Having owned the Salon's for three years and testing the K2's in my home for several weeks I decided to buy the K2's and sell the Salons. It was not an easy decision but one I don't regret.
For $900 a pair it puts it against stuff like the svs ultra bookshelf. Any time a speaker does a good job at a price I consider reasonable it's great. -Anyone- can make a good sounding speaker for big money.
These speakers are the same price in Australia ($1600 AUD) as the Klipsch RP-600M! Go figure.
Are they better than the Elac b6 ?
Dave G The revel is a warmer, fuller sounding speaker, with much more refined trouble than the B6
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac if you go there will be trouble, but if you stay it will be double
@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac why is it warmer ? Can you describe what warmer sounds like ? And doesn't it depend on the recording you are listening too, as they can be quite different.
And try the JBL 580 those horns for the price not comparison seriously.
They look like my svs ultra bookshelf speakers
@Steve Tllsdaleys but does it sound better?
@Steve Tllsdaleys Have you heard the Revels to compare before? Would be interesting to compare as people tend to like both
@@RennieAsh The SVS Ultras are more analytical. The M16's are warmer with more low end. The tweeter in the M16 is very good. It doesn't get sibilant like the Ultra tweeter can. The M16's are slightly leaner in mid-range too. I ultimately parted ways with the Ultras for the M16's. The Ultras just became too in your face kinda presentation with some music passages. That being said they are very good bookshelves
Shane Lindsay I’d probably like the Revel, though I’d have to hear them first. I’d like to hear both but too expensive for me to test at this stage
They a nice but I don't need them. I could use another preamp power amp or integrated amp. I hate those crappy A/V receivers.
