As Nicki's debut album, she had such a heavy burden to bear. Take yourself back to the state of hip hop in 2010, and specifically, the state of female rap. Female rappers had not seen mainstream success since the early 2000s, record labels were not investing or putting money behind female rappers, the public had forgotten that female rappers even existed at the time. Breaking out during this time, Nicki had to prove to everyone so many things not just about herself but woman in hip hop in general. Especially with it being such a male-dominated genre, the misogyny in it alone was at an all time high. People kept trying to control her to make her more marketable, forcing her to have writers, telling her she can't sing and rap on the same album/song and be successful, telling her that she can only sell if she sells sexual songs... Pink Friday was meant to dispel all those rumors. Throughout the entire album, she does not mention sex once. This is intentional to prove to her haters and naysayers that female rap can be lucrative even if she isn't selling sex. Another huge thing she had to dispel was that she wasn't going to be a successful rapper if she was singing on her songs. This is why she leaned into the pop-y sounds. Overall, this album is a STATEMENT. That she is here, she isn't going anywhere, and that female rap not only can survive but THRIVE. In the opening track, "I'm The Best," she says that 'she's fighting for the girls that never thought they could win, because before they could begin you told them it was the end, but i am here to reverse the curse that they live in" -- showing that she is here to re-introduce to the world that female rappers are worth record label's investment AND the public's investment.
@@bobthepoppop this album was hope for female rap because female rap had been for so long and when Nicki dropped pink Friday it brought females back into the game.
I gained a lot of respect for Nicki in this era even though everyone knew her as the weird rap girl😂😂 her songs were huge in Nigeria!! also, there is no single song about sex on this album, which was a big change from the hypersexuality of rap then
Her best album by FAR, if you want to listen to more rap nicki do her album “Queen”. If you want to hear more pop nicki do her album “Pink Friday:Roman Reloaded” (it’s not a deluxe that’s the actual title of her second album lol)
if you want nicki spitting hard bars and flow you should check out her album “queen” she had a MASSIVE hate train and the public and media were against her and she came back with this album.
I was around 13 when the album came out. Pink Friday just perfectly blend in with my teenage years, the excitement, rebellion, hopes, joy, sadness, anger. Now when I listen to the album I remember a lot of old memories because I was always playing Pink Friday on my iPod touch. I’m so happy people are slowly realizing shes more than just a gimmick, her pen her talent her strategy is actually so amazing.
Really solid debut album. Her confidence, boldness and risk is why she’s most successful female rapper of all time ! Forever greatful for Nicki and what’s she’s done for Rap. Can’t wait for her Pink Friday 2 🔥👏🏾
Her last album released was Queen. You should do that next! It’s more hip-hop and lyrically her best in my opinion! You’re going to cry laughing at the song barbie dreams btw 😂
I'm one of those people watching and feeling nostalgic lol. I haven't listened to this album in years but I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it, otw to visit a college campus my senior year. I'm 30 now. So this really unlocked a core memory for me!
A *phenomenal album.* I love when Nicki sings on her songs, the production and her choruses are so great. This and Lauryn Hill’s album are both absolutely iconic.
@tal7952 THIS IS THE REALEST COMMENTS I’VE READ!! The girls who get it, get it!! Society was so closed minded when this came out because she “went pop” and missed out on bars for being dweebs.
Your commentary and ear for music is so well rounded. I love how you were connecting the lyrics to the sonic landscape. Personally, I don't have the ear to analyze various sounds elements within an instrumental so they falls into the background. But, you did a great job at connecting various sound elements with the lyrics. You made me pay more attention to the lyrics by pointing out the heart beat monitor on Save Me and the engine sound on Blazin. Now I feel like I have more clarity as to why she may have chosen some words or topics. Overall great reaction! Cool to see you have a neutral viewpoint of who Nicki Minaj is through not just the media perception and persona, but through the artistry.
Love your humor and thoughts, great channel. There have been a lot of UA-cam reaction creators the past few years that have deep dived into Nicki’s music (especially ppl who typically wouldn’t) and they’re always pleasantly surprised with how talented and intelligent she is.

This album is insanely underrated in the hip hop community. I can understand it not being appealing to old hip hop heads because of its perfect blend of pop and hip hop but COME ON. For this to be a debut album which not only showcases Nicki’s ability to make mainstream music but also depicts her lyrical ability, multiple theatrical personalities, her flow, delivery, and ability to literally ride any beat she deserves way more credit than she gets. Not to mention she created this album with intent of no sexual content due to labels trying to shove her in a box and tell her she has to be a sex symbol. She talks all about this in interviews. When female rap was in hospice she quite literally became a miracle worker and single-handedly revived the genre. She deserves more credit than she gets!
This was her debut album aswell with all those iconic features it hasn’t been a female debut album ( or album in general) better still till this this day
I really enjoy your reaction. I personally think you would like Lana Del Rey Born to die it’s so detailed and perfect. She and Nicki are one of the best lyricist to ever do it.

"cause I'm fighting for the girls that never thought they could win, cause before they could begin you told em it was the end. Edit: Eye for an Eye from The Infamous (Mobb Deep) is one of the grittiest, hard-hitting rap songs I’ve ever heard. Another example of a song Nas absolutely blacks out on. Cannot wait to see that reaction
Also Did It On’Em is my favorite song too!
