Saad, I did send an entry on June 9 before the deadline. I was totally new to Google drive, I did not understand until last night that I needed to allow you access to the link...I have fixed this if it is not too late to have it considered for the contest if you are still reviewing. I did test the link that it worked sending to another email account of mine, but not to someone else. I apologize. I did so much work and hope it isn't for naught.
Quite admirable how often you are able to host the contests - good luck to composers, I won't be submitting this time, but I'm excited to hear the pieces!
Hey I'm glad to see this opportunity! I really look forward to seeing the Saad Haddad prize continue over the years, it's a wonderful process to allow up and coming composers be seen and heard by some of the current best! I'm wondering for the purpose of a mockup, how should we handle aleatoric bits?

I have a feeling you're not in the same time zone as me. So, the deadline midnight June 9th in which time zone? Probably won't make a difference for me, but I'm asking for a friend. Thanks!
OOoooo!! This is sooo exciting. I've never entered any contest before but I think this time I definitely will. Super excited to hear what others come up with. Best of Luck to everyone else submitting and thanks again to you Saad for putting on these competitions. You mentioned submitting an audio files as well with the score - is the submission of a mockup required?
I've been trying to reach you, hope you see my messages soon😔. I'll leave my google drive link here, hope this comment gets noticed drive.google.com/drive/folders/193Csxe80c4rXsBuHEcqL6RbHP1QyMNbB?usp=sharing
@saadhaddad How would you recommend notating electronics? Or can they be done in the audio file, I'm going to be using logic and sibelius, not sure how to transfer that information into notation software, at least in a way that would be most accurate to how its supposed to sound
In the Google document, it says that the Google drive link should include “XML file of your work”. In MuseScore, I have the option to export either an .mxl, a .musicxml, or an .xml file, while the latter is “outdated”, according to Musescore. Which of these do you prefer? Also, do I have to provide my legal name or is pseudonym/chosen name okay? (:
Darn, I was hoping to submit my latest string quartet but got all hung up on the google drive/xml stuff. I usually just send an mp3 and accompanying pdf.
I’ve already submitted my piece, but I realised I would like to change the title. Can I still change the files in my Google Drive folder until the deadline or have you already downloaded them? (:
Do pieces in older classical styles have a chance in this competition? You didn't say anything about it here but in the video about the orchestral scores the judges immediately didn't like the romantic piece because of its style and talked about it as an imitation of a style instead of a piece that is just genuinely in the style that composer likes to compose in Not saying this competition is bad or anything (I think it's a great opportunity) but if there are genre expectations they should be mentioned
There were over 60 works entered. If there were genre expectations, all 5 of them would have been in a certain style. All were different. If there was another great work that was in an older style I would have most likely included it if it was crafted better than the 5 finalists’ works I chose.
I wish that you could judge them on the basis of the score. Most of us composers don't have access to players to perform / record their string quartets. And if so, the rendering may be nothing like what it would sound like if played by quality musicians. Sound libraries and engraving programs are incapable of making string quartets sound like real quartets. I know some of you would disagree but that is my belief. Unfortunately, there are "only" about 50 professional quartets out there for the several thousand quartets composed each year.
New music is not the same as groundbreaking music. New music is any music that has never been written, heard or performed ever. I don't get why it seems now a days it needs to be groundbreaking as must to be considered for a prize.

I’m excited too! If anyone hasn’t watched the last one, go watch it and hear Patrik’s finalist piece^^^
You're too kind!!
Nice contest! If I wasn’t in the middle of 2 commissions I’d totally try to get something submitted. Good luck to everyone who plans to enter! 😊

Wow, I’m so glad I was recommended this video! Will be throwing my hat in the ring
Great to hear about this...time to move my quartet from Finale to Musescore!
Thank you for these opportunities Haddad!
How great is that? Love it! :)
Beautiful opportunity, I missed the last one but giving this one a try.
Good luck!

Will the prize include a reading/performance?
That would almost be better than the Dorico prize huh?
No reading. Just lots of actual eyeballs and ears on the finalists’ music.
Hello Saad! I've been trying to reach you since friday to tell you that the form was not working for me and I couldn't submit my quartet!😮💨

Question: what software do you use to edit/prepare your score for print?
Dorico or
Sibelius

@scorefollower UA-cam channel has a lot of great examples of this kind of notation. There’s no one size fits all.
Can it be an arrangement of an existing song (like from a video game or tv show) or does it have to be original?
Original
Hello, Saad! Can I submit a work, which consists of several short dances for string quartet? They all have the same idea so my quartet is like a suite
Yes, of course
@@saadhaddadmusic, thanks! Just submitted

XML; whichever name best represents you in case you are chosen as a finalist
@@saadhaddadmusic Perfect, thanks! ^^

Try sending without XML.
Hi! (: Can I upload my submission to my UA-cam channel before the deadline?
Yes! It’s your music!
@@saadhaddadmusic Great, thank you! (:
I’ve already submitted my piece, but I realised I would like to change the title. Can I still change the files in my Google Drive folder until the deadline or have you already downloaded them? (:
I think you should be able to change
@@saadhaddadmusic Great, thanks!
What about a string quartet + soprano singer?
No
I'm not finding online how to send multiple files in a single Google drive link.
Can anyone here please help John? Thank you.
You'd be surprised how much music I " don't write" because of an entry fee.
Good thing this one doesn’t have one.
Hey Saad, I have one but it envolves graphical notation, hence I can't have a mockup to submit. Is that ok?
Yes, try your best!

@@saadhaddadmusic that makes sense. I'll give it a go
@@yoavshati that’s the spirit.
Can I submit it if the string quartet has been in a reading session by a professional group?

Yep, I do judge by reading scores. So do the other judges.
@@saadhaddadmusic Would you judge by score alone?

Hmm, don’t think I ever said anything of the sort. 🧐
