Thanks Simon, the previous TG-5 also had this feature so watch out for those too. The Olympus Tough TG line are fun little pocket cameras as well as being rugged. I just have to feel brave enough to take it snorkeling on holiday next time. Thanks again for watching Simon.
thanks, I am going to buy this camera for me son so he can explore the macro world whilst learning about light, optics and photography as he grows up. I think a tough camera is perfect for a young boy, as it won't get broken. Your photos look excellent.
Thanks, Mike. It's a great pocket camera with a good spec. I'm sure he'll get some great images with it. Check out my other TG-6 videos. The live composite feature is great, too.
Very impressive!! Wonderful work! I just bought the TG-7! Amazing camera for adventure, travel with kids, macro and underwater! After the TG5 and TG6, the iQ and sensor technology could be better, but I’m still very happy with the Camera!
Thanks for watching. I do think the macro capability is the best thing about these cameras. Live Composite is a close second. Considering it is wrapped up in a tough, compact body is fantastic. Sadly, the size of the camera does mean a compromise with the size of the sensor. I have been very happy so far with my TG-6.
Indeed, the small sensor is a trade off. Also the accessories could be affected with a bigger sensor. Nonetheless I would love to see a little improvement in both, sensor and processor. Those improvements would show the OMDS commitment with new and innovative products.
Hi So glad i came across your channel. I bought this camera last year for underwater photography. And i put it away after my trip. Now im super excited to bring it back out and start playing with the macro side of the world. Also i definitely see the benefits of the stacking feature. Thank you so much! ❤
It's a great little camera. I have a few different videos using the camera for other types of photography. The live composite mode is great for light trails or star trails.
Great Video Andrew, A Very Impressive Camera and fabulous images, those stacked images are brilliant! Raw files from a compact and a ring light insane! thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching Tony. The ring light is just one of the many official accessories you can add to the tg-6 including fisheye and telephoto lens adaptors - prices vary but the ring light was a fairly reasonable £27.00.
@@AndrewWaltonPhotography Yes Andrew I am very keen to buy one! I have recently had the experience where moisture has got into one of my L series lenses I had bought second hand! I have never used it in the rain but it goes to show that nothing is weather proof, I like the idea that this camera is the same MP as my phone but 1/3 of the price and shoots RAW and 4 k video, Olympus has be my camera choice 2nd only to Canon
@tonymckeage1028 I'm enjoying using it, like any camera it isn't perfect, but I'm pleased I bought it. The zoom is short because it is a weather sealed unit, but it still zooms optically further than my phone seems to.
They are good little cameras. Yes, you could get better macro shots with a mirrorless camera and an expensive macro lens, but this camera still takes great images and is so versatile.
Those are some very impressive close-ups and I can see why you love this camera. Clearly having the LED ring is highly recommended I imagine. The focus stacking is super impressive and I really like that side shot of the ex-Dune Beetle has epic detail and sharpness.
Hi Dennis, the LED ring is highly recommended. It costs me an additional £27 but really helps with macro images. On paper, a 12mp compact camera doesn't sound impressive, but I think given the small sensor, Olympus was wise not to cram in as many pixels as possible. Being a smaller sensor, there is noise in the images but no worse (probably slightly less) at 100% than our FZ82 images. Thanks for watching.
Sorry for rhe late comment Andrew! Looks like an amazing little camera! Great quality, especially the stacked images, but rhe unstacked ones definitely worked good on a couple of those shots. The last image with the aphids was fantastic! That definitely would be a great camera to have along on a hike here in the mountains when i dont want to lug the Sony and tripod around. Reslly enjoyed it pal. Hope toubare doing well and having a great week!
No worries Paul. I did wonder if you'd fallen foul of a bear after not hearing from you 😄. Hiking is what the camera is made for so it will take a few knocks in it's stride. To be honest it probably weighs less than a FF macro lens for it's a good bag companion to a dslr/mirrorless with landscape lenses on the off chance of some macro images. Thanks for watching Paul and have a great week (hopefully no more storms).
Thanks, Peter. I find this an amazing feature to be included in a compact camera. Whilst it isn't perfect every time for an automated process, it does a pretty good job on the whole.
A great set of images Andrew. After watching I went on to ebay, ready to splash, and I saw that I would need to sell a lot of my beloved babies in order to justify spending that much! maybe in a year or so. I think I agree with your preferences on the stacked/non-stacked for all those shots. Another good'n. Keith
Thanks again for watching Keith. The tg-5 is the predecessor and it also has the image stacking feature, its usually more affordable. It might be worth a look.
Wow. What packed wee camera. When did this come out? Whatever that year it’s ahead of it’s time. Them macro images from it are fantastic. The image of the inside flower was a big surprise seeing them wee bugs. Definitely another world.
The TG-6 came out in 2019, but it is based on the TG-4 (2015) and TG-5 (2017). The updates make the 6 the best option, especially if you want to take it under water. Thanks for watching Paul. 🙂
If you own either the TG-4,5, or 6, it's worth giving it a go. If you aren't steady enough or the wind is blowing your subject around, then the camera will let you know if it is unable to create a stacked image. The results certainly impressed me. Thanks for watching.
Packs quite a punch that camera. I would honestly be tempted to buy one if I didn’t already own far too many cameras….might make a great acquisition if my son starts showing a proper interest in photography in a few years. Indestructible, compact, good image quality, good functionality and ease of use….what’s not to like?!
Too many cameras? Is that a thing 🤔 😀 I used the excuse that this would be ideal for taking out walking in wet weather. Thanks for watching Dave, its pretty good for a compact although I'd still like a street photography compact like a Ricoh GR or Fuji xf10 etc....what we're you saying about too many cameras again!
Andrew: Thank you for the photography lesson. You taught me something new. In my salad days, the word "Stacked" was usually reserved to describe a certain portion of Female Anatomy. A different kind of "Stacked" image...for sure.
For regular photography (family snaps etc) I would say that is isn't much different from the quality you will get from your phone. BUT, if you want to do macro photography, or want a tough camera that you don't mind if you get wet or drop it (for example if you are a hiker) then this is great. It also had a great long exposure feature for star trails/vehicle light trails which is fantastic (if you add a neutral density filter you can do daytime long exposure too.) I have demonstrated these techniques in other TG-6 videos on the channel. One downside to this camera is the zoom or rather the lack of it, distant subjects are sadly out of reach. I do enjoy using the TG-6 but I am lucky in that it is not my only camera.
Pretty impressive for a compact camera. The stacking is really seamless - that would be a big time saver compared to doing it in post. Do you get to keep all of the individual shots as well as the stacked one? Great images - particularly the insects. 👍
Thanks for watching Robert. Sadly you can't save the stack (well if you can I haven't found out how yet 😄) . I have the camera set up to shoot RAW and Jpeg so at the moment I get an unstacked Jpeg and RAW plus the stacked Jpeg. I hadn't realised, depending on the shot, the camera can take up to 8 shots in the stack not 5, I mentioned in the video.
great video, I use the Tg for underwater, would you say stacking without a tripod is possible or impossible? I know a fast moving object like a fish would be more difficult, but what about a nudibranch?
Jim, all those shots were taken handheld. There may be issues with the amount of available light underwater, but if you have a setup with lighting, then it could possibly work.
if im not mistaken you are using the LG1 flash right? im about to buy this camera just for macro photo and i dont know which option is better the lg1 or the fd1
It doesn't always appear, for the majority of photos I've taken with this camera I've not suffered the issue. I did find out that it is impossible to shoot infra-red with this camera, everytime I tried with a 720nm filter, there was a huge hot-spot in the middle of the image.
With the TG-6 it is fairly straightforward. Select Microscope mode. Select image stacking from the menu. Point the camera at your subject. Press the shutter button and take the images. It's that simple.
Fantastic find for a camera. It does an amazing job. I wouldn't walk past this camera if I saw it in a shop window now. Great work Andy.
Thanks Simon, the previous TG-5 also had this feature so watch out for those too. The Olympus Tough TG line are fun little pocket cameras as well as being rugged. I just have to feel brave enough to take it snorkeling on holiday next time. Thanks again for watching Simon.
I have an old TG-3 and was absolutely blown away by the macro. Absolutely the best feature after durability.
They are a great little camera. Thanks for watching 🙂.
Wow, that Olympus sure packs a huge punch in a little package!! Incredible images! Bruce and Otis
Thanks for watching Bruce. It's a clever little camera. Waterproof, crushproof, freezeproof, and drop proof, plus it does long exposure too.
Oh wow wow wow. These are damn impressive! 😍 I'm a complete sucker for insect photography!
Thanks for watching Fenn, glad you liked the shots.

Excellent! Also, I agree with your choices re: stacked vs. single images.
Thanks for watching David, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video and the photos.

I just purchased a TG-6 and am looking forward to the Macro abilities. Great video!
The in camera stacking option is fantastic IMO. Enjoy your camera.

Great shots Andy! Great review, very thorough. The camera does a great job, over all I think I prefer the unstacked shots
Thanks for watching 🙂 It's all personal preference, I settled for a mixture of both. 😀
Hey Andy just rewatched again so I could see the pics 😊 all really great macro shots. I liked the ones with stacking the most I think
Thanks for watching Yasmin, the stacking in camera is such a great feature of this camera, it really worked well for the insect images.
Hi, big like 7 & thumbs up...Wow, there is a big difference in the stacked images...Thanks for sharing...
@elizabethsmart3705 Thanks for watching Elizabeth, and yes, the image stacking can make a huge difference.
Awesome results mate, loved the level of detail in your stacked shots! Great work!

Image stacking is definitely a term in macro photography and post processing but I guess both involve nice images 😀
Great video! Would you reccomend this camera to a person approaching photography ?

Question. Can you use the LG-1 light continuesly when when shooting in Stacking mode? Thanks.
For the most part when shooting macro I use my LG-1 on the camera. I believe It provides a constant light on the subject rather than a flash.

Yes it is the LG1. I went for the LG1 over the FD1 as I wasn't intending to do any underwater work with the camera. It was also cheaper 😉
@@AndrewWaltonPhotography thanks for your reply! Then no doubt, ill buy the LG1
How far away can you be for voice note to pick your voice up clearly please. Thanks
