  • King Gizzard and The Lizard wizard have established a tradition amongst their growing discography of writing albums in an entirely alternative musical style to their 'default' psych rock sound. This video explores how they go about keeping these albums from feeling generic or inconsistent.
If you found this video entertaining then please consider leaving a like or subscribing, I'm hoping to grow this channel with more in-depth videos analysing some of my favourite media in future.
    Question for the comments:
'What is your favourite King Gizzard album and why?'

Their sonic aesthetic is why I love everything they put out. I'm very much a tonal listener, some of the genres Gizz explores tend to sound very dry and plain. But KGLW's production is always so rich and consistent, so it doesn't feel jarring switching between folk and metal.

I have come to notice some of their live performances make me appreciate the songs I didn’t like as much at first in terms of their studio versions. Their KEXP video for FMB was amazing and really made me like that microtonal style. Honestly I do that with a lot of bands if I don’t like their studio albums. Live shows do wonders to songs sometimes. I do like how their albums are tied together in the gizzverse. My top 7 favorite albums from them in no order would probably be FMB, Infest the rats nest, MOTU, Nonagon, Polygondwanaland, Willoughby’s beach and Sketches. Quarters and IIYMF are close but I still like them a lot too.

as an opeth listener, switching between folk and metal is something I barely even notice mid song

I'm gonna say their best album is Polygondwanaland. It displays their mission statement in full: "Let's try this, but make sure we get it right". Psychedelic sound, the woops and delay screeches, time signature fuckery and polyrhythms galore. It is THE essential KGLW album.

same. I couldn't decide on a fave for so long, but when I head the horology trilogy on Chunky Shrapnel that's when I knew.

It was so wild when I first discovered their music, like another universe opening up for me. They influenced me greatly in how I approach making music and my musical taste got much more diverse. They rock. Also good job with the video, I enjoyed it man!

Very detailed explanation, personally I look at Paper Mache Dream Balloon to see an evolution in thought. Songs like Trapdoor, Most of what I like, and Paper Mache were used as blueprints for songs in other albums, as well as Gumboot Soup which you mentioned briefly which is the most self aware album I’ve heard in a while

I absolutely agree, pmdb certainly did see the band trying their hand at something so unlike all they'd done up until that point. Stu said that album came from feeling like they'd had an over reliance of effects and production to help convey the music on Quarters! so they felt they should strip it back and really let the music shine for that one, and I think it worked very well. Was the first album of theirs to be digitally mixed too!

My favorite gizz album is probably Nonagon Infinity (don't think I need to elaborate, it's amazing) or maybe Murder of the universe, since that was the one that got me into gizz. I also don't mind the spoken word passages that everyone seems to shit on. Rats nest is probably my third favorite too.

I like how they have a lot of Australian references in thier music eg the Kookaburras call in Doom City, the Bush Ranger and Billabong (which is a name of a watering hole) in Billabong Valley. And Brunswick East (a suburb in Melbourne), hey Ive been there. And East West link, etc. When your Australian, it's good to hear stuff that you can relate too. I mean, I like the song Going to California for example, but I can't relate to it as much as stuff that is from what I call home. My favourite album is Polygondwanaland. Wasn't Australia part of that land? 🤔 Maybe.
Sometimes I think I can hear influences of other Australian bands too. Maybe 🤔 even Australian European folk music. So I think this also makes them great to listen to. I don't think OS listening would pick that stuff up. But GizzLizz definitely has a influence from thier countrys roots.
    Great video 💚🦖

They are the best band in the world in my opinion. You could be a complete non-gizz head, watch them live and be convinced they incomparable to any other band. Everything is so well thought out and meticulously planned, whilst also being released at machine like rates. I’m so glad to have KG in my life, they’ve provided me which such a joy - and always a conversation starter! Great vid, thanks!

I love when random YTers post videos where it’s just saying how cool King Gizzard are also thanks for making it!
Hmmm favourite album is Polgondwandland just because the music is so very intresting and had a weird odd plot or Infest the rats nests because I can scream my head off and get annoyed at life and it handles the topics of it so well and it’s just amazing to have on.

I love fishing for fishies, my favorite gizz album for some reason even though there are way more interesting albums to choose from. I just like the blues/country style I guess

From what I heard they found that album a tough one to write and record. They clearly poured passion into Fishing for Fishies so it makes sense why it can be a favorite.

There are a few of their albums that I consider to be masterpieces starting from least to best masterpiece. Sketches of Brunswick East is one of the most surpringly good KG albums to date since it's a jazz album with very clean production but it is amazing. Polygondwanaland is one of their best prog rock albums with just some of their highest peaks and some moments remind me of Sing To God era Cardiacs. I'm In Your Mind Fuzz is pure KG and it's amazing. This was the album KG needed to get their signature sound. Nonagon Infinity is one of the best Psych/Prog albums of all time and it's absolutely brillian but it's not my favorite. I think *Murder Of The Universe* is the most EPIC, and EXCELLENT album they have done yet. Three epic tracks with spoken word and prog rock like sequences is what they did here and it is incredible. My 3 favorite KG albums are also the GIZZVERSE albums or the ones with the castle in the middle.
This is my ranking of their albums completely
    1.Murder Of The Universe: 10/10
    2.Nonagon Infinity: 10/10
3.I'm In Your Mind Fuzz: 9,5/10
    4.Polygondwanaland: 9,25/10
    5.Sketches Of Brunswick East: 9/10
    6.Butterfly 3000: 8,9/10
    7.Quarters: 8,75/10
    8.Gumboot Soup: 8,5/10
    9.Paper Mâche Dream Balloon 8,4/10
    10.Flying Microtonal Banana: 8,25/10
    11.Float Along - Fill Your Lungs: 8/10
    12.Fishing For Fishies: 7,8/10
    13.K.G.: 7,75/10
    14.Oddments: 7,5/10
    15.12 Bar Bruise: 7,5/10
    16.Infest The Rats' Nest: 7,25/10
    17.Eyes Like 1The Sky: 7/10
    18.LW: 6,75/10

Wildly inventive and unconventional, this band breaks boundaries and constantly tries new ways to improvise. I have my individual favorites but taken as a whole, their projects are always entertaining. They are also a fantastic band to see live.
