  • An original documentary on Australia’s iconic “Meat Ants” (Iridomyrmex purpureus), also known as “Rainbow Ants”. From their massive colonies and nest structures, to their fierce ability to overwhelm their victims, to the way they kickbox to resolve conflict, to their avid farming of leafhoppers and aphids...Meat ants are some very fascinating ants indeed!

I think what is most interesting about Meat Ants is the way they fight other meat ant colonies. It is very cool to see how they establish territorial boundaries by almost having "duels". It looks as if they are slapping each other with their front legs haha. Instead of killing the other colony and being detrimental to the overall species' success, they find a way for both groups to survive and thrive!

just found your channel, always been interested in ants since a kid back in the 70s, fascinating little bastards, although back then i was a bit of a barbarian dealing with them, if i had the tech back then it would have been nice, anyway good for you and thanks for giving me something pleasant to watch. keep up the good work.

I found that the way of kickboxing to solve problems is most interesting about these meat ants. Also, their unique behaviour to accept other newly mated queens or caring for them is quite amazing.

The thing that interests me about meat ants, is that they tend to help other meat ant queens when they’re done with the nuptial flight and drop down to the ground. I have never heard anything like this before and it fascinates me. Meat ants really care for the survival of their species.

What interests me the most about meat ants is the way how they strategically choose the mutualistic relationships that benefit them the most. For example, when they stop protecting a tree and protect Its parasites instead because they give better amounts of food

    Ant contest and general rambling:
Meat ants have always fascinated me mainly due their being a large abundance of them all around my neighborhood especially at my school, and their fierce and relentless desire to protect their colony, sisters and mother from anything. Near the main entrance right next to the path, there is a massive meat ant nest that stretches about three meters across full of millions of hungry ravenous worker ants that appear every time someone strays near there nest for too long or when school ends..... They swam the path every afternoon causing people who unfortunately have to cross paths with them them to sprint in fear and hope they didn't mange to collect any stowaways in their shoes. But if you, one of the rare and unlucky ones who manged to gather a few new.....friends.....then you will certainly know as they bite you and tear at the tender flesh of your ankles in a desperate fury to protect their colony from a potential danger that is you. I also find it interesting that they can have many satellite nests, like at the nests at my school. I always thought these were rival nests and was confused as to why the smaller nests weren't decimated by the larger one, until I saw this video (thanks for clearing that up).
P.S: You make fantastic videos, especially the documentary's about all the weird and wonderful ant species. Also thank you for getting me into ant keeping as I have just got my first colony of adorable big headed ants in a test tube set up an i'm starting to build a all in one ant nest due to the tutorial you had post a while ago. If you find this story interesting I would love the helpful boost of winning that starter pack to move my ants into once they have got a few more workers.
    Thanks - Joseph

The thing I find the most interesting about Meat ants is that they "adopt" related queens back in the colony. I live in the Netherlands and the most common and here is the Lasius Niger, which would actually kill any other queen they would find, even if it's from their own family.
That fighting is also really interesting! It is so funny to watch and it made me chuckle during lunchbreak

The poor dude does a decent job considering he has to produce an episode _every week._ Even with a large number of captive ant colonies, there's not THAT much exciting stuff going on to produce a quality 20 minute video every week. That being said, when interesting stuff actually does happen, he'll get it in his video. It's the philosophy of having 1 really good video every month, or 4-5 videos a month, only one or two of which is actually interesting. I'm not sure what the best thing is in terms of overall content quality, but as far as playing the UA-cam game goes and satiating the algorithm, posting regularly is probably the better move, even if it results in inconsistent quality.

The most interesting thing about Meat Ants for me is the way they know how to keep their surroundings in check. With the honeydew, they know how much they can eat without the plant dying, but how? What indicators do they get? I find this so fascinating that the balance of nature is purely showcased by these meat ants. I would love to have this nest because I just found my first queen in April and she now has 4 workers, so I think it would soon be time to get an upgrade from her tiny test tube.

The most fascinating aspect of meat ants? How civilly they act toward other meat ants. Not just the nonviolent conflict resolution by kickboxing, but the way they take in and care for new queens, even if they weren't from the same nest. It's fascinating social behavior towards others who are the same species, but not from the same nest/family.

I watched a colony of meat ants at my old house. There was a locust plague where I live & I'd catch them & chuck them on the nest. I liked watching them attack & grab the limbs & hold it & dismember the legs so it couldn't get away then drag it into the nest. They seemed a bit smart because they knew exactly how to disable it so it couldn't escape. A bit morbid I know but it was a great strategy to catch their food.

By far my favorite thing about the meat ants is how they wage war against each other. Here in USA the ant wars lead to mass death and casualties to each colony, if not the demise of the losing colony. The fact that the meat ants “fight” and then go separate ways for the greater good of both colony’s is just amazing to see. It really shows how certain species have evolved to ensure the longevity of their colony.

It feels like ants are better at dealing with waste than humans. And I have to love how the meat ants can essentially make extensions to their own home by helping other queens. They're quite clever, considering I've not really seen such civilised encounters with other meat ants, and their care for even alien young meat ant queens. So, they're definitely interesting for their unique style of dealing with fellow meat ants.

What I found most interesting about meat ants is that they'll adopt queens who may be related to them. It astonishes me because lots of ants will just see them as a food source even if they are from the same colony! I found it really intriguing that they would even help them construct there clostural chamber! I also found it very strange that they pose themselves more upright and raise their gaster as if they were going to formic acid spray the other meat ant.

I grew up in Far north west Qld. So this is major meat ant home base. Common thing I found as a kid with meat ants, is they would have nests under termite mounds. So you would see the termite tower, standing about 30 to 60 cms tall. At the very base was a meat ant hole, of course they would pour out and attack you non stop. And being 8 to 10 years old I'd kick over the termite mounds, shock to discover it was always full of termites fighting long term siege like existence with the meat ant invaders.

If you walk along a path and the ants are going across the path, they will turn towards you...it's a bit freaky when thousands of ants that create a dark line across the path, then that line changes direction towards you. And can actually follow you if you change direction.

Thanks M8, awesome presentation. Hey I once found what appeared to be a dead meat ant nest / mound. It was about 30 metres from the road, in the heat of the day no activity at all, even after gentle disturbance. Surely that couldn't be possible?
I mean how could that happen?
I tell what I found out about meat ants, apart from most of the information you shared, thanks again, is that they offer an evolutionary fight back against cane toads. Fantastic news.
    Great show 👍👍👍

The thing I think is most interesting about these ants is that they are so similar to the formica rufa species I know from Germany where I am from and which are part of my profession. I love how nature does the same things at the other end of the world without any kinship of the species.

Their social ways of fight over territory without killing and form satellite nests blew my mind. Ants are smart, could be amazing to care for my own

In Albanian there are ants that also build quite visible trails and clear out the area around their nest. Though I think that they mostly harvest grass seeds

The video quality, the high definition and excellent clips showing either hard to find or rare occurrences, this video was great! It must’ve taken a long time to make.

I love how intelligent these ants are. They seem a lot smarter than some other ant species in the way they resolve conflict and accept new queens. Remarkable!

I find the way how the Meat Ants resolve territorial problems with the strange way to kick box.
I never knew that they wold do that. By the way ,
    I loved Your video.
