Good news about Patchwork: The official solo mode that ised to be available as an expansion is now part of the anniversary edition of the game. Got my copy last week and it plays rather well. 😊
Great list. Diced Veggies has an official solo mode now. Patchwork has a solo but it was an expansion. I think it’s available in the 10th anniversary. Faraway and Azul both have fanmade solo modes
If I remember correctly, someone participated in a contest to create a solo mode for a game that didn’t have it and someone created a Robokid solo bot for Fort that won. It’s really great, definitely worth looking into to. They even created files for the bot that match the art style of the game. One of the few “unofficial” solo modes that is definitely worth the effort to learn and play.
I love this list idea! This is something I daydream about a lot - my favourite non-soloable games getting solo modes. And there are times I am really interested in a game but decide not to add it to my collection because it will not get played enough for lack of a solo mode. My list looks like: 10. Iki 9. Dabawalla 8. Faraway 7. Cities 6. Wayfinders 5. The Wolves 4. Tea Garden 3. Star Wars Rebellion 2. Eclipse: New Dawn for the Galaxy 1. Endeavor: Age of Sail
I think paint the roses would make a good app. Hooky is a great example of a game that I would love to see get a two player mode. Maybe you could do a list of games that need a 2 player mode, KAY!
I would cry tears of pure joy if they figured out a solo mode for Paint the Roses. It's one of my favorite games but I have no one to play with, and I find playing on bga to be a little difficult
I love solo modes and for River of Gold there is a great fan made print and play one on BGG. Love that game. I wish there was a solo mode for Hadara. Great list!
There are unofficial solo modes for Azul on bgg. They work pretty well and basically just give you priority of which tiles the bot takes. Patchwork has an official solo mode and it comes with the new anniversary edition.
I feel like patchwork is the easiest. Like you flip a card or roll a die to see if the AI take piece 1, 2 or 3 and then move them around the timeboard according to the time on the piece. So AI still goes whenever they are last and will also take the little 1x1 pieces as they go around the time track, but how they fit pieces and what they score is not counted and you'll have one of those score tracks like so many solo games, that determains that you win with x-amount of points.
I love this topic! 😃 I always wonder if anyone would talk about this. I always think and wish some games would be fun if it had a solo variant. I can name so many games, but for me, I wish Cafe Baras, Video Game Champion and Clank! But I would agree that Boop should have some kind of solo play. Like you are doing a puzzle movement, boop all the kittens or cats off (all the pieces are on the bed randomly placed spaces) before yours does (play like normal) or something like that lol 😅
Good news about Paint The Roses - there is an official solo mode from a prominent influencer. According to Nickolas J Murphy of The Brothers Murph, the official solo mode involves just taking the entire box and throwing it in the garbage. Seemed unusual to me, but I hear fame changes people.
I second the wish for a River of Gold solo mode. I really enjoyed that game the one time I played it, and I would've bought it on the spot if it had a solo mode. I'd really love to see a solo mode for Dice Throne. Obviously Dice Throne Adventures exists, and Marvel Dice Throne Missions is about to exist, but I'd love a good way to play regular Dice Throne matches against all the other characters solo. The system they use for boss battles in DTA works really well, and I wonder if it'd be possible to release a deck of solo cards per character.
Patchwork has a solo deck that had a very small distribution years ago but is almost impossible to find. I do believe (and hope) they are including it in the anniversary edition that will be released soon.
For Faraway, I had a look at some of the fan-made solo modes. However, the issue is that as player interaction is very limited in Faraway (it boils down to who picks the first card), running an automa for that feels like too much hassle. The fan-made solo modes anyway just spit out a random score for the automa at the end. So I don’t think the distraction from running an automa is worth it it so I just play it solo as beat your own high score and I reduce the card display to two cards only. Works just fine.
There's actually a great solo mode for Patchwork that just came out I'll be covering. It originally was not available except I THINK on the BGG store or as a promo in EU, but it is now a part of the Patchwork anniversary edition. As well, Azul has a great solo mode that's on BGG as a fan variant. I haven't played it A LOT but it's fun enough and easy enough. But a whole bunch of games I was able to start solo was thanks to fan made variants that ended up becoming official solo modes like Root, Great Western Trail, Grand Austria Hotel (all games I haven't yet played multiplayer lol).
I feel like River of Gold could work really well with an automa deck similar to Raiders of the North Sea, Architects of the West Kingdom or Honey Buzz.
I usually have a game on the tabIe for solo play. I looked at my games and realized I have so many games that have solo modes already. So many games and not enough time to play them all.
While I understand the thought behind the list I think that too many games have bad solo modes shoehorned in that we shouldn't make designers feel bad for not including a solo mode if they don't want to work out how to do it.
So this time without BGG link😅. Diced Veggies at some point (I believe) started adding solo mode to the box - it’s also available in files on BGG. It’s quite nice

That subtle Limp Bizkit reference was freaking gold.

Azul not having a solo mode is a major reason why I own Harmony and River Valley Glassworks. Wanted something similar that played solo.
3:15 Would Black Sonata scratch your itch for a solo deduction game?
BTW, lovely hair colour.

I agree about Paint the Roses ... most people find it too brain burny but i just love it
I agree, I’ve held off buying a deluxe copy because I don’t think anyone I play games with would like it… 🥺

How you feel about Hooky is how I feel about Letter Jam! I'm obsessed!

I appreciate being reminded of Hooky. I need to pick that one up
It’s sooooo good
Gartenbau. Wish it had a solo mode. They keeping telling me “soon”
I play Azul solo on TableTop. Love it! You can play up to three bots at a time.
Nice!!!
I feel like River of Gold could work really well with an automa deck similar to Raiders of the North Sea, Architects of the West Kingdom or Honey Buzz.
I have to agree with you about boop. I don’t understand why I can’t figure it out. It seems so simple. Lol
Same!
Faraway, Fort and Azul have solo mode available on bgg.
Yay!
I usually have a game on the tabIe for solo play. I looked at my games and realized I have so many games that have solo modes already. So many games and not enough time to play them all.
Did I just bought the app of potion explosion because this video … Of course !
I haven't bought Hooky yet because it's a 3+ game. If I could play it at 2 I would have bought it the first time I heard Jamie talk about it.
I wish Faraway had solo! BGG has solo mode available
Awesome!!
All app-assisted games should have solo modes included. Looking at you Divinus and My Father's Work.
I agreeeeee
While I understand the thought behind the list I think that too many games have bad solo modes shoehorned in that we shouldn't make designers feel bad for not including a solo mode if they don't want to work out how to do it.
Nobodies trying to make anyone feel bad 😆
So this time without BGG link😅. Diced Veggies at some point (I believe) started adding solo mode to the box - it’s also available in files on BGG. It’s quite nice
When are you going to do another villainous tournament?
We’re planning for January!
Fort has a good solo mode on bgg
Oh, thank you!! I can finally rip the shrink off my game! 😊
Diced Veggies are 1-4 player game. Also Patchwork 10th Anniversary is now solo
Yup, my diced veggies has a solo mode sheet in it 😊
Originally it wasn’t and then they added an official solo
I don't see Diced Veggies on BGA?! 😢
Ohh it may be in Alpha but that means it’s coming soon!!
Azul fan made solo automa by Carolina Gamer is great. ua-cam.com/video/1hXgkjhSVDQ/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared.
