You’re one up on me because I still haven’t seen a Bergman film yet. This has been on my radar for quite awhile to check out. I’m thinking I’m going for that 4K though.
It's visually stunning and I think it will look great on 4K for sure! An interesting movie, but not my favorite.
Hey Ken. Good for you stretching your limits to try new films/genres. I'm the first to admit that I have a very difficult time connecting with, Bergman. While I appreciate his place in film history and obvious influence on film, it's still a reach for me. I haven't watched this one all the way through yet but I've watched Persona, Wild Strawberries, Virgin Spring, Autumn Sonata and a few others. So far, Wild Strawberries has been my favorite. I'm sure it's me and I need to take more time with his movies and like you said, give them all another watch. Tough nut to crack, in my opinion. I haven't opted for the set just because I'm not sure if he'll ever be one of my go-to directors but you never know. Just so you know, I must have watched Persona 5 times and I'm still so confused. 😂😂😂 Great thoughts, my friend and thank you so much for sharing. Great job. 👍👍
Yes. I'm definitely not getting that set until I've seen a few more. I really liked this movie, but just skirted outside of greatness for me. Strawberries is on my radar for sure! Thanks for watching Steph!
A great introduction to Bergman. I bought the Bergman collection based just on the strength of this film alone. Not at all disappointed.
Awesome! How many of his films have you watched so far?
@@midlevelmedia So far 4 or 5. I got it in this last Criterion sale. The way they curated the films in a particular order makes them so friendly and digestible.
I did buy the Criterion only because I heard so many other physical media channels on UA-cam mention it. I put it on late at night and only got halfway through so definitely have to watch it again in full when I'm not about to fall asleep.
A slower burn that I definitely didn't enjoy as much as I wanted to.
@@midlevelmedia Is this better than the BFI's 4k version??
Wow it’s like magic you grow your hair back since the last video you posted LOL
Haha! It's a like a Tarantino movie. Should have used CGI hair on the DT hunt to keep it consistent. Lol
For the record the 2018 4K remaster was used for the Blu Ray in the huge Criterion Bergman box set. I have both versions. While the earlier transfer is still great, the newer one has better film grain management and contrast.
Ohhh for sure I bet. Did they do a standalone release for the 2018 version or just as part of the boxset?
Great review Ken! Please also review Stay out of the Attic that you recently bought!
Not sure if I'll get around to a full review of it, but definitely will share my thoughts when I see it.
Middd levell another great review
Thanks man!
Great vid! Love hearing about lesser known titles!
Definitely a film worth checking out! Thanks for watching!
I have seen this film and I admired it more than I "enjoyed" it I suppose, but I did enjoy it well enough that I would say that I like the film. I haven't bought it though, because I am waiting to save up enough money/opportunity to buy the Bergman box set lol.
Definitely understandable and paying 125 for 20 movies is better then paying 20 for 1 for sure.
Great review
Thanks Steph!
an 83 minute documentary on Bergman. that sounds quite dope
It was pretty informative!
I’m importing the BFI 4K version of this which is coming out soon! I can’t wait! Glad you liked the criterion version.
Definitely enjoyed my experience here and that BFI Edition should look great! Thanks for watching!
As someone who is also a relative newcomer to Bergman, I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts about this film.
I have seen it once and had an interesting response. I admire its bold attempt to address the big questions about the meaning of life and its creative use of surreal fantasy elements. As you said, it is more entertaining than expected and wonderfully photographed.
But with all that said, I don't love the film. I admire it but I'm not passionate about it. I do like it enough that I will also pick up the 4k version when it's released.
I hope you get to check out Persona, which I really love and is my favourite among the Bergman films I have seen. Wild Strawberries is also highly recommended.

On the comedy front, some of the other movies that do a great job spoofing the encounters with death include Woody Allen's film, Love and Death (sadly, only available on DVD at this point), and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
The Woody Allen film is a comedy classic. It's a spoof of Russian literature but you don't need to know anything about Russian literature to enjoy it. It's hilarious and will always be my favourite Woody Allen film.
Woody Allen is a filmmaker I need to see more of for sure. Thanks for watching and the suggestions! Glad to see we feel about the same way here.
I own the war of the world’s from criterion collection
That's a fantastic release!
@@midlevelmedia yes it is
Just did Bergman marathon. This was my least favorite from him. Love the idea.
Ohhhh really? Well now that definitely makes me want to check out more. Thanks for watching!
@@midlevelmedia I part of a movie club. So we watch most of his films. Wild Strawberries was our groups favorite. The Seventh Seal was the least. Now I don’t know how I would feel about the film if I just watch solo without comparing to his other works.
Ingmar Bergman, pronounced correctly. Max Von Sydow...close enough. "I get all sorts of *hit over my pronounciation". My bad.
Haha! I wasn't necessarily talking about you, but yeah I guess so. Lol
