  • This is a film showing me replacing the throttle cable on my 1200GS, it’s a bit disjointed because it’s the first time I have done this job and I was trying to film at the same time. If I am going to do a job on my bike or car I look for a You Tube film to give me insight and confidence, hopefully this might help you if you have the same problem with your bike, thanks for watching JP

Write your self notes about it all as you can for get so much or, draw pictures, I've done both, and have a Chilton's book for my 09 1200rt that I am doing this very activity to, replacing a very messed up throttle cable from a bad accident. You are doing great mate.

Thank you for making this video. I just bought a used 2009 BMW R1200R and my throttle body pulleys just broke. I took that cable splitter box out and forgot how the cables went back in. If it wasn’t for you video, I wouldn’t have been able to put my bike back together without waiting for a Haynes manual.

Hello, I had my throttle cable go bad on my 2002 RT so when I had the bike apart I changed all (4) cables while I was in there. The extra price of the cables was a small price to pay for all the labor time.FUN,FUN, FUN.John Campbell USA.

Hi John thanks for commenting, your right, what a performance, not like the old days when, a, cable was the price of a couple of beers and all the tools you needed were a pare of pliers and the whole job took 10 minutes, seasons greetings, John, from sunny Devon UK

Hi john, i had the same problem as you, when i turned the handlebars to full lock/turn it always revved high by itself. To me the original cable is 2/3 cm to short, but on the steering column you have to feed the cable through a bent looking piece of wire (stops the cable moving about) near the top, all i did was bend the piece of wire towrds the throttle side and it did the trick, gave me a centi or more leeway so it wasnt so tight. I wasnt too keen on everything apart because of a bloody cable. Now i know what to do if i have to. Cheers mate.

Yes Mojo Man if it ain't bust don't fix it as they say, no need to do unnecessary work and go to the extra expense, £120.00 for all three cables, my top cable was cream crackered, when I stripped of the outer casing the coiled steel sleeve was bent and rusty, thanks for commenting, good luck with your bike fixing and safe riding, John

Hm, I think I’ll try first on my 2007 R1200ST to disconnect the short cables with the throttle bodies in place.
    With the radio turned off.

It seems quite strange to me that it is so difficult to change the throttle cable on an adventure bike. That cable happened to break once on my old Suzuki Bandit 400 and I fixed it right on the road and continued my way, which doesn't seem possible on the GS...

Hi Evangelos K, thanks for commenting, I think I did excaudate the complexity a little bit because of my lack of experience of working on the bike, if I had to do the job again I would find it a lot easier, but that procedure was as described in the Haynes workshop manual and I recon all those parts did need to come off, bit of a tricky job if you’re in the back of beyond which after all is how the bike is supposed to be used, thanks for your interest and safe riding/driving JP
