    Left Thumb Straight Left Wrist
Are you struggling to keep a straight left wrist?
I’m going to explore one little thing that is probably causing you to not have a straight wrist. So stick around to the end of the videos and you don't want to miss this.
But today we're going to talk about the left hand, and the left thumb. The left thumb actually plays a huge role in the way we hold our instrument.
The thumb plays a huge role in how we hold the violin, how we approach the violin and how we approach intonation.
Check out the video above to watch and observe how the left thumb plays a big role in keeping the left hand straight.

There are a lot of videos explaining the how, but never the why - which is much more important. Thanks!

Hi Eric, I have the opposite problem and I have never found a video dealing with it. My wrist bends outwards, and I have struggled for over two years now with it, and not one teacher has been able to fix this. So, CAN YOU please make a video about that, because the visual is so much better than a verbal explanation of this problem. Thanks very Much!

I can surely make a video on that and try to help you! Hopefully within the next month because I have some other videos planned, is that alright?

I have been playing for years and I teach the thumb tool as well. I have a question, though, and maybe you can help? I have a lot of tension in my left hand. I had to correct my injured wrist in college because I overcompensated by pushing my wrist too far in the opposite direction. Now I am working on the left hand being rounded toward the fingerboard rather than perpendicular to it. I play songs with a lot of 4th finger and my whole hand ends up in ache and pain. This issue has only been for this last year, I think. I am also now trying to take the hand from violin to cello hold. I am finding that extremely difficult.

Thanks for your question. This video was geared for anyone who was starting their journey with the violin. Every case is different when adjusting the left hand. We don’t want to over twist the wrist because that could have long term effects as well. I’m curious to know where the pain is. If it’s in the hand, it could be that may be squeezing your thumb or somewhere in your hand that’s causing the pain. If it’s in the wrist/forearm, it means that we could explore different ways on how we adjust that part of the body.
If you’re continuing to have trouble. Send me a message at ericmrugala.com and maybe we can work together to help reduce some of your pain.
      I hope this helps!
