@@christremblay1848 That's fine, and I've studied critters domestic and wild by the thousands. It's pretty easy to tell when it's getting heavy and when it's just play.
The colt is enjoying the company. Although some comments suggest that the elk wants to fight, I'm not so sure. Elk 'play fight' in this way with each other, with deer, and even with smaller animals. The elk could have easily jumped into the colt's pen if it had wanted to. Their legs are like springs. But . . . no horse should ever have to live alone. They are herd animals and need other equines for companionship and to feel secure. In some countries it's illegal to make a horse live without another horse for companionship. If this colt doesn't have equine companion that are out of view in this video, something should be done about that. Buy another, board one, or even borrow a buddy for it - being sure to not take another horse away from its own buddy in the process.
They do play fight, but this doesn’t look like play fighting. I don’t usually see herd animals play fight with members of other herds, and especially not with herds of other species (and ones they’ve never seen before). This really just looks like a defensive behavior from the elk. It wouldn’t jump over the fence and put itself in danger if it didn’t need to, it’s just trying to warn the horse not to come any closer or else. Animals typically give warnings and don’t usually just randomly start a fight since fights have a pretty good chance at getting yourself killed.
Nope, not play fighting. Animals from the deer family (ike the elk) usually stomp their front feet as a threat. The cow is warning the horse not to get too close or she'll charge.
@@VivianaSilverback No, that's not what's happening here. Having lived in elk country for decades with them bedding down in our back year, playing with our dogs and calves, it's clear what's happening here, and she is not threatening the horse.
The elk could have cared less about that ball. Didn't even know what it was. The elk looks more like it would like to fight if that fence wasn't there. That's my take on it.
that's an accurate take. the elk acted like it had a calf to defend and even tried to charge at the horse a couple times. horse is lucky the fence had eclectic lines.
twice, over the years, we had Shetland foals that played with fawns - the adult horses stood at one side of the field and the adult deer stood on the other side of the field - all of the adults from both species watched without interfering with the play of the little ones - something never to be forgotten - of course the "Experts" claim that there is no interplay between the wild and tame animals of different species - glad you had the chance to enjoy a similar experience
Yep horse is trying to play...Elk either thinks the horse is trying to kill the ball thingy and sees the ball and/or the horse as a threat or it's after the horse thinking the horse is being aggressive to the ball (treating the ball like it's a small baby to be defended). The elk is not playing. The horse certainly is.

The horse has master diffusion of conflict skills.
Horse: "Let's play"
Elk: Fight me!!!
Horse: "...lalalalala 🎶 🥰 Let's play! 💕"
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you. 😊
This is pretty incredible footage honestly. Very humanlike... when he sees another kid that looks like him he wants to share his favorite toy.
The horse was trying to be nice by offering the ball to the Elk. Once the ball was flung over the fence, the Elk jumped. Just wanted to square off with the horse instead. Adorable 🙂 video.
Amazing interaction!
Good thing that fence was there to protect the horse. That elk was not playing.
The horse is incredibly cute though and seems like he needs a friend.
Not so. The horse was in charge, the elk knew it, and one had more fun, while the other expressed attentive patience; then they greeted properly by sniffing and a good time was had by all.

@@christremblay1848 You're an expert?? :)
@@thenextpoetician6328 no im a hunter.
@@Punkini yup the elks ears and posture say it ain’t playing 😊
Nope, not play fighting. Animals from the deer family (ike the elk) usually stomp their front feet as a threat. The cow is warning the horse not to get too close or she'll charge.
@@VivianaSilverback No, that's not what's happening here. Having lived in elk country for decades with them bedding down in our back year, playing with our dogs and calves, it's clear what's happening here, and she is not threatening the horse.
@@Punkini They are playing. Have seen it so many times where we have elk all around us.
What an extremely interesting and complex interaction!
That was just beautiful to see! 💜
Really 'QUITE AMAZING' what animals surprise us with!! Enjoyed this very VERY much. Thanks a heap.
Thorse is "playing" with the ball. But the elk seems more he wants to fight with the horse and is not interested in the ball.
The elk is free. If a horse is in a large pasture it won't play with a ball either.
I could watch this all day.
That was so cute! Loved watching this ❤😊
This was Exactly what I needed after a Hard long day at work!!
Horse was playing...Elk was actually in defensive mode..protecting 😊 but we'll go with playing lol
mamma wasn't playing, mamma would have got that horse if not for the electric wire.
Rare and special! Thanks 😊👍
Love this video. It will surely make anyone smile
this is so sweet ❤️
This is just adorable!!!
Horse: 'My Bo'!
Elk: 'What Bo'!?
twice, over the years, we had Shetland foals that played with fawns - the adult horses stood at one side of the field and the adult deer stood on the other side of the field - all of the adults from both species watched without interfering with the play of the little ones - something never to be forgotten - of course the "Experts" claim that there is no interplay between the wild and tame animals of different species - glad you had the chance to enjoy a similar experience
I don't think the elk is playing. It looks agressive.
It isn’t. You’re no expert you can’t even spell aggressive properly
@nodical802 Aren't you a sad nasty bugger. I'll pray for you.
Too bad because the horse really would love to have a playmate.
My imaginary dialogue was so funny you guys should’ve been there
Enjoying life… ❤
The elk was more interested in the horse than the ball. Just wanted to make friends.
That Elk is so sweet, who knew horses and Elk had encounters like this?
Two playful spirits.🙂
If this wasn't filmed, and wondering how this ball got on the other side. Great job (a year ago) capturing this moment 👍
The Elk did not play. She tried to attack the horse.
No it didn’t. Stop making shit up. If it wanted to attack the horse it would’ve
@@Mark_o_Helm the horse DEFINITELY had no interest in attacking. You need glasses pal
@@nodical802 of course not. I never said that.
