- As a tribute to the great French ballerina, Yvette Chauviré (April 22, 1917-October 21, 2016), I have made a video of the dance sequences in which she appeared as the ballerina Mademoiselle Beaupré in the film 'La mort du cygne' (1937).
Mia Slavenska, the Croatian ballerina, also appeared in this film as the ballerina Nathalie Karine - here in the swan dance sequence between 6.18 and 8.08, falling through a stage trapdoor which leads to her being unable to dance again.
The little girl and aspiring ballerina is Janine Charrat - thanks to Carles03 for the identification.
Enjoy!
And Slavenska is wonderful too. A totally different school and a different way of dancing, but very agreeable to watch as well !
yes, a different training and is shows in the dancing. i liked to watch it as well, as much as anything as there is little film of Slavenska.
And the little girl is Janine Charrat... Thank you for uploading!!!
thanks for the identification! i'll add it to the 'Notes' attached to the upload.
Thank you so much ! The movie is not available anymore on youtube and i was desperate ! Chauviré is quite superb (wonderfully old school), I really love her "ballon" and her entrechats six are truly marvelous !
i have the whole movie and will upload it to YT and post the URL here - i liked the movie and it would be good to have it back in circulation.
i've uploaded the movie to Vimeo as 'Ballerina' aka 'La mort du cygne' (1937)
This 1937 film from director de Jean Benoit-Lévy - 'Ballerina' aka 'La mort du cygne' 1937 film stars Serbian ballerina Mia Slavenska and French prima ballerina Yvette Chauvire.

Oh thank you SO MUCH ! I was so sad when I realized i couldn't find it anywhere. By the way, your channel is really full of gems and treasures. It's a pleasure every time to discover which new video you found for us.
my pleasure - i was lucky to find a copy of the film and keen to share it so everyone could have access to it. i try to be a bit eclectic on my channel - and have been lucky to find things not so readily available on YT. glad you like the channel!
John Hall I hope you re-upload the movie someday to Vimeo. Thank you for these wonderful UA-cam uploads
Bonjour, je cherche ce film partout, en VOD, DVD, etc, je ne le trouve pas, savez vous où je pourrais le voir en entier s'il vous plait ? Merci beaucoup
A kind tribute to La Chauvire. I've always wanted to see a bit of this film. Does anyone know who the male partner is? I suspect the choreography is by Serge Lifar.
i've uploaded the movie from which these extracts here are taken to Vimeo as 'Ballerina' aka 'La mort du cygne' (1937)

This is so lively and interesting. What in the world was that little girl up to?!
the little girl (TLG) is a ballet aspirant and worships the Yvette Chauviré character - there are those who wish the ballerina badly and TLG looks out for her, though not before a stage trap door dramatically swallows Mme Chauviré up!

thanks :)
Love the dance at 3:59!
yes, from 3.59 on it looks like a take on Les Sylphies (the men dressed as Romantic poets, the music! :)
@@JohnRaymondHall its Aveline's revival of Suite de danses
At 9:46, looks like Mia Slavenska.
yes, it is - she had star billing in the movie - the Yvette Chauviré character wanted to dance in the conventional channels and the Mia Slavenska character wanted to dance in a modern way. in the 'Notes' attached to this upload i said i'd make a similar video with the sequences in which the Croatian ballerina appeared. hope you like it!
oops, sorry failed to read your notes.
often my 'Notes' are pretty dry - LOL - it's the footage that's the thing :)
Was she considered great?. Awful. Sorry.
Maravilhoso vídeo.
Uma relíquia!!!!
Thank you for this lovely post!
i must say i loved putting it together to honour the passing of this great dancer - and it was interesting to see her perform so early in her career.
Strange music. Awkward movements. Very unpleasant feelings watching whatever it was.
