I got to hear and record this band live in Chicago both before and after Pepper Adams split. He was a very important part of the band. He and Thad go back to teenage years in Detroit, and co-led a fine quintet for years. I LOVE watching Thad conduct, and listening to the result, both of his own band, and of the Basie band. He was a musical monster -- great player, great writer, great conductor.
One of the greatest and hippest bands ever in the world of jazz. 100 people are there. No wonder things are the way they are. So glad and so blessed to have been able to play so much of the Thad and Mel book and to have met Mel! A vey laid back cat.
This personell stayed with us in Munich for an entire 3 weeks. What an experience!!! We had enough time to get acquainted with all the band members. I was hanging with Jerry Dodgion, Pepper Adams, and Ed Xiques.
Just a great (Danko/Reid) piano/bass intro of the lovely/sensitive ballad “Love Walked In”. Perfect choice for an fantastic lazy Sunday-afternoon and performed by a top band! Sadly folks we don’t seem to have this kind of passionate big-band music, and those pure ”innocent/carefree” days anymore .... So relax and lets Dig this fabulous Jazz band and those long lost playful days, thru the legacy they left behind for us to saviour. Enjoy & Cheers!
I recognize Earl Gardner on lead trumpet, John Mosca, Earl McIntyre, and Janice Robinson in the bonz, Pepper, Richie Perry, Dodgion, Xiques, and Oatts on saxes, Mel, Rufus, Danko and Thad. Anyone helping a Brudda out?
Larry Moses on the far left of the trumpets. Jeff Davis (ex-Woody Herman lead tpt) next to Earl, and Frank Gordon on the end. Jeff now lives in Denmark, I believe
Alexandre Mihanovich : ce tá falando dos meninos de N.Y. ?;eles estão começando agora (e muito bem) mas esses aí e o Thad já são for ever (no melhor dos sentidos)
This is one of the greatest hard hitting bands ever, still travelling soon to Japan , as the Japanese are quite adept at copying Western music of all types !
Saw them at the vanguard Monday nights ‘72-75. Wonder as I was a teen and didn’t fully understand w. T. F. I was witnessing- who is bassist and pianist? Thank you. And where is Roland Hanna?

Thad always had the best bands!

70s NYC sound and beyond. Thad took Big Band to such a high creative( not imitated) level which has not been surpassed to this day. 🙏🙌
what a beautiful setting
Love this live so much Thad cornet solo ended for Love Walkin is super amazing!
Sad to see those empty seats. Nowadays come on to Toronto’s Massey Hall -folks would pay hundreds to see a band this amazing.
1. Love Walked In
2. It Only Happens Every Time
3. Sixty First and Richard (Rufus Reid)
4. Ambiance
First song is built on Love Walked In but is Thad’s original theme named Evol Deklaw Ni.
@@armthealiens Which is Love Walked In spelled backwards. :)
Antenne 2, the golden age!
Jazz under the sun :)
Hey Chris, how you doon?
There's a video somewhere here on UA-cam of the Woody Herman band playing that venue as well...
13 July 1977, RF TV broadcast, Les Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez, La Grande Parade du Jazz, Nice
The first tune is that riff from the Ben Webster with Joe Zawinul lp on Riverside? A Thad Jones line .
Tremenda orquesta que tuve el placer de verla en Milán.

European television was so enlightened.
Now you know why the first album on Sunnyside is a Danko-Reid duo.
Danko was something else.
Danko also toured with Chet. I think he did the Tokyo tour.
VERY Young, long-haired Dick Oatts on Alto - cute!
No, young Oatts is on tenor on the far left here.
Smokin' date !!!
good
Thank you for not naming the musicians because, as you know, jazz fans are never interested in that sort of thing.

Doxy quote by Jerry Dodgion on the first tune! Yeah.
And Sonny Moon For Two
