Damn, that is one mighty fine rendition. The Alvin brothers never cease to hit it out of the park and leaves one in awe. xo

Wow, great playing, singing and song writing. Everything these reunited brothers do seems so good, just hope they keep it going (for our sakes/pleasure)

200 views only in the almost 2 years since this GOLDEN GATE JUBILEE QUARTET's recording posted? Only 1369 views of the KUT Austin, Tx Public Radio rollicking in-studio performance?
Dave & Phil Alvin's ROOTS ON THE RAILS REVUE has spent the last couple of years hitching a vintage steam-punk caboose to the back of an Amtrak and Via Rail Canada passenger train car touring remote reaches of North America. Traveling on board with collaborating musicians hopping on and off at various points and fans touring with the artists. Now that may seem more an exercise in privileged wish-fulfillment than an activist's way of calling attention to the "BAD CONDITION OF THIS WHOLE' WORLD," yet when they pulled into Po'Town, Oregon's Union Station for their late summer's fling leading off the recently acoustically upgraded OLD CHURCH's THE MINOR KEY concert series (in Po'Town's actual oldest church) after the previous day's show in Whitefish, Montana two nights ago with accompanist Rick Shea, Texas troubadours and pickers extraordinaire Eliza Gilkyson, Butch Hancock and Cindy Cashdollar along with Seattle area soulful thrush and sometime member of Northern California's THE GUILTY WOMEN, Christy McWilson in tow, the possibilities expanded exponentially from the grass roots up.
The joint was jumping with a Sold Out acoustically dynamic house and this cover of the GOLDEN GATE JUBILEE QUARTET's Depression-era gospel testimony "I DECLARE THIS WHOLE' WORLD'S IN A BAD CONDITION" which would've brought relief to the ancient Greeks devising CATHARSIS and even the Tabernacle-era Judeans down through the Mississippi Delta's Sacred Steel devotional lyricists giving up their JOYFUL NOISE directing up-swells of gratitude to the mystery Deity above.
Never mind that second-generation bard Eliza Gilkyson, in her poignant opening set accompanied by Rick Shea and Cindy Cashdollar introduced a new song as her "Secular Hymn" channeling similar organic human gratitude for the mysteries of the struggle for survival to no named Deity. What we feel isn't subject to doctrine or dogma. These force-of-nature communal feelings brought forth from such depths of varied experience with survival struggle is the makings of a wonderfully ecstatic exchange of human voices and crafted instrumental timbres shaking the rafters most therapeutically over HOMELESS EMERGENCY-declared and RENTERS' CRISIS submerged cities of the West, coinciding with Po'Town's strange summer and first real t-shirt hot August Moon night crowned with its starry dream-inducing skies witnessing above.
Thank you to THE OLD CHURCH's visionary curator AMANDA STARK, house manager Gina Piroli, MINOR KEY CONCERTS steam punk WILD WEST garbed host Xander Almeida, the sound crew that let the old building give up its worshipful secrets and the DAVE & PHIL ALVIN PUBLIC INTEREST vision that has harvested such brotherly, sisterly loverly and even lawyerly musicians who brought boxcars of inspiration along with such seam-through-time songs, shafts of human creativity and desire helping our struggling town way off Washington and Global Trade Oligarchs' "MYTH OF NATIONAL E-CON RECOVERY" upon these blessed Cascade slopes of the Pacific Rim.
