I was on that HST (the guy who was getting on during the introduction of the video) I recently went on a class 67 MK4 stock which was worth losing my train ticket for.
Another similarity is that they were re-engined with Paxman VP185 engines, which were also fitted to the East Midlands Trains fleet of HSTs during the early 2000s
Yes but in the XPT the exhaust is more vocal due to a slightly different silencer arrangement. The Class 43 VP185 just sounds like a bag of nails unfortunately. Not evident in this video due presumably / possibly to a fault (the engine speed is being held down to near idle as the train pulls away at the end of the video). Compare to `XPT at Wauchope'. I hope Daniel will allow this suggestion. I like both of the videos with this title; imagine the conductor abhorting a train departure to talk to a customer in the UK !
Nice video. The XPT is slower mainly due to the traction motor gearing being lower compared to the Class 43 so that the long steep hills can be negotiated. Design speed 160 km/h (99.4 mph). Many other differences but another important one is the XPT had proper aircraft style vacuum toilets with effluent tanks from day one. Check out `XPT by COMENG' (3 videos) here on YT, if interested.
I was in Australia touring for 3 weeks in February, sadly not by train, but I did go and see the night XPT before it left Melbourne for Sydney. It also had the sleeping cabins on as well. It did look dated but I thought there was a unique blend of the British ‘HST’ at the front and back and the carriages looking rather American!
Was that British HST a Charter service? Just Marylebone to Banbury? I love the XPT! Them seats look amazing and the water dispenser is a nice feature but slightly more noisy because of track I guess?
HSTs are not at the moment wheelchair friendly, one small space in standard and the First class wheelchair space isn't accessible due to storage racks. Would need a good overhaul first
At least that Australia are to keep the XPT. Perhaps they should keep them as they are still the best trains in the world. Whilst ScotRail wants to replace the "Inter7City" HSTs with new trains or to inherit the Class 222 Meridians from East Midlands Railway. Once the new EMR Class 810 Aurora IETs have entered service.
The HSTs may be more comfortable than the 80x trains, but they are less accessible, have much worse acceleration (which is the difference of whole minutes in journey time) and also they ran quite diesel-under-wire quite a lot.
Those XPTs sound epic! Great video on comparing the two

Awesome Daniel!
I would love to ride on the XPT. Never knew that Australia has their own HSTs. Very interesting.
Gonna have to do Queensland Rail, tilt trains. Diesel, and electric

Yes the carriages are based on an American design (Budd), built in Australia by COMENG.
Great video
0:32 - you did both in one day? That's impressive!
7:59 is that jointed track? makes it sounds like a steam train puffing away!
It sounds like there’s a wheel flat (or flat spot if you prefer) on one of the carriages.

I absolutely love the IET’s but I do agree that the seats are basically wooden and yes replace Hst motors and refurbishment
I Love These ❤️ and If I Were One of The Train Operators That Used HSTs I'd Keep Them Going Forever And Have InterCity 125s For Life 👍
Going through the Australian bush... [insert quip about Australia needing to do more to clear lineside vegetation]
Aren't HST running in Scotland
Yes, the ScotRail Inter7City services are ex-GWR HST cutdown sets - the first class is wonderfully GWR with the leather seats.
Thanks
@@paultidd9332GWR still have some of their HST class 125s
@@melodydunn1 yes, the ‘Castle’ sets but I think they have almost been withdrawn.
@@paultidd9332 it's sad the Castle Set HSTs are gone
At 8:12 sounding very much like a steamer…

Unfortunately the XPTs are being replaced by CAF DEMUs without Sleeper cars next year I believe.
The class 800 will not last for the years that the HSTs lasted for and they will never be classed as work horses of the the rail network.
Here here can't stand today's crap that runs on our tracks.
Noooooooooooooooo not my 800 moo

The HSTs Have Good Acceleration Compared To The 80x Stock
Those Mk3 seats are very uncomfortable. I’m 6 foot tall and there are no headrests on those seats unlike the 800’s.
Nooooooooooooooooo not my. 800 is my lokul trane
IM SOOOOO EARLY
HSTs aren't very reliable these days
that being said, they are comfortable with good ride quality
