Grew up watching Bruce Lee in the 80s..then came Van Damme. Was blown away with no retreat no surrender and bloodsport ...Van Damme is a legend ...respect .

Thousands of martial artists around the world can do that, it's nothing special, they are just not famous and they don't act in movies, that's all. Second thing, do you know how long does it take to film some movies scenes? Sometimes it can take up to even few weeks for one fight. He looks good on the screen because he has good body proportions but there is nothing crazy about his balance, regular karate kicks with dead stop.

@@Peinfull87 I saw some of his shows on yt, of course it looks nice, no doubt, but it's really nothing special. You can learn that also, it's easier than it looks. 99% taekwondo black belts can do the same with ease at any moment, but of course it takes some time, like everything.
Yes, many people can do those kicks and even the splits. The fact that he took the chance at 18 to come to the US, chase his dream and make it is incredible. The inspiration he had for so many young men (me included) is unmatched (besides Bruce Lee).
i'll just say this, for having met him at a martial art convention in brussel back when he was in his late 40's,
the guy is as legit as it get when it come to his technique, and you would have been hard pressed to find anybody saying otherwise.
so in his prime before his ordeals ? he would have been an absolute beast.
last but not least, he's the kindest, most down to earth celeb you can imagine. i'll never call him an has been, he will forever be a freakin' legend.

Not that light contact shit counts other than speed. But 18-1 in kick boxing isn't a slouch they can fight octagon or streets, and the shit in the movie's is just for action shots.
Regardless on how efficent in a real fight, he had complete control on his movement and his body.
Van Damme is still in immaculate shape to this day. As an action star (and underrated actor) he always gave 100% to every role he played. Even his directorial effort "the Quest" was a flawed but very entertaining film. Forever a Van Damme fan!

how ? it's a freakin' master piece of 90's martial art movie, and it even stand on it's own as a adventure movie.
excellent cast, amazing setting, score that kick all kind of ass, bunch of very likeable characters, and for the time the choregraphy was even pretty darn good as western movies goes.
all in all, it's one of JCVD best movie that still hold up to this day.
I’m 50 and I’ve always been entertained by JCVD. I don’t understand the hate, maybe it’s jealousy I don’t know. I also don’t care who can beat up who. I just know that for 10 bucks back in the day me and my buddies could go be entertained for a couple of hours. Thanks for all the movies JCVD and I hope you can stay healthy for years to come. Maybe make a comeback I for one would buy a ticket.
Van damme is my favorite martial artist. He is the reason I love martial arts. I still think he has the most beautiful and effective kicks.

My dad took me to see Bloodsport back in 88 and I instantly fell in love with Van Damme. I instantly joined a Karate dojo and have been training ever since. After Bloodsport he just kept nailing it for the next several years to, Kickboxer, Lionheart, DOuble Impact, Universal Soldier, Hard Target, TImecop, and Street Fighter (Yes I really did enjoy enjoy Streetfighter)

anyone who ever trained in martial arts knows exactly what it mean to train hard and put your body into extreme to achieve what you want doesn’t come that easily, JCVD achieved the perfect form and body while also trying hard to do what he loves, movies.

@PKB Van Damme is no where near as good as Bruce Lee was all he has are high kicks and splits Bruce Lee got a part in a as movie for doing a jump kick and kicking a light out that was pretty high up and he was so fast they had to slow the camera speed to even see his kicks

@PKB considering I’ve taken MMA Tang soo do Taekwondo judo karate boxing kickboxing and have 3 second place trophies for full contact Karate and a seventh place medal for weapons I’m pretty sure I know very well what MMA is the style that Bruce Lee came up with was the very first form of what’s called mma today

As a boy growing up in the 80s, he was my hero. I started lifting weights and practicing martial arts because of him. I still do that today.

So true....JC is so talented....very underated, as an actor, and as a fighter. He still has "got it"! He has super "foot and eye coordination"...while most of us try to maintain good hand/eye coordination. JC's feet are controlled just as well as his hands! If I tried to do splits...if most people tried to do splits...we'd either hurt ourselves internally and/or split our pants! JCVD #1 forever.

To this day... Bruce Lee and JCVD. These guys are who inspire me to train and teach. For 33 years I've been committed to the martial arts and all aspects of it. I truly thank these legends for instilling a passion in me since I was four.
The same here !! Those two and Stallone , made me start with pushups at 8-9 years old. Squats and situps .. and later at 13 years,pullups at the park a few kilometers of my home.. Made my own nunchakus at 13. Built a wooden man at 15. That's how we trained back then , without internet.. just seeing the movies and magazines.. and of course the music - soundtrakcs

Well I mean he's no saint. All the little stories about him are true, he did cocaine the years after his big movies. I heard that years ago, now confirmed on these forums. But yes he'd be one of the reasons I got interested back then also.
I do, my master was Tuan Nguyen, world champion in wing Chun, in the 80s, he was friends with Chuck Norris, Jean Claude, came to a tournament held each year by Chuck Norris, he showed his kicks...after actually witnessing it and seeing how the kick is performed, you can see how much rotation in the hips is required. He was kicking over our bags and hitting the chains, he was a phenomenon back then.
I personally persevered at my double front kick and my flying scissor kick, because of seeing someone the same size as me, Jean Claude, could do it, I became confident and applied my self.
I can walk into bars in most places in Canada and I'm still recognized from tournaments in the 80s and 90s, this is way before UFC.
We grew up watching our all time favourite. So many wonderful memories a true living legend and a great legacy....Love you always Jean Claude Van damme an inspiration to us all 😍 ♥ 💖 🙏

Been watching a lot of 80s and 90s action films recently and I’ve started to get into his films now and he’s definitely my favourite. I personally think he’s brilliant!
Better than many others anyhow. Seagal had 1 good film, Under Siege. I tried a few other, it's not funny how bad they were. Jackie Chan is OK, but his films are not so great to watch. Chuck Norris was very good, and his films I thought were good, In 1 episode of Walker he did a tiny exhibition of 3 styles that he knew, he was versatile. It's just in most films he only used his Tang Su Do.
I will have to agree with you, I like Van dammed as an actor because also as a person he is very compassionate always put everything into the films he did, very similar to Bruce Lee, a pure perfectionist. Great video and footage, I've never seen this footage before. Thank you

I always thought that VD was one of the best movie martial artists when it comes to kicking and stretching. However, it was when I noticed VD helping GSP (George Saint Pierre) with his kicks and his stretching that I realized how good VD is.
Also his style jcvd is a born star and worked hard as fuck too

Van damme is perfection of execution, point and simple. His form, precision and technique always was top notch. Only someone blind AF or only focused on their hate for the guy, and not the professionnal, would go after him and says that "he suck" or "he's not legit."
Dude fought in semi contact and full contact tournament. And even as today, a shit tons of pro MMA fighters sees JCVD as one of their idol, learned from him and says that the guy is 100% Legit. None other than George St-Pierre on top of it, the GOAT of his era in the sport. I mean, you guys can argue all you want lol, but i'd rather believe what a guy like St-Pierre says about JCVD than some random basement youtube nerds and their biased opinion on JCVD just because "he's a shit dude who's done shit stuff in his youth."

Years of trainings, making such utmost fantastic efforts to gain that shape, sweating and finally reaching and producing the outcomes what Van Damme really deserved. The technic is awesome, its creation of his own style mixing karate, bodybuilding and ballet. The splits are inimitable. Esteem and respect to the master.

People often conflate great martial artist and great fighter. While I can't say how good he was at fighting as there isn't much footage I can say that he is a phenomenal martial artist, perfectly balanced technique and flexibility and there is no doubt he knew and perfected the moves. There is no doubt that it could be argued he is the greatest martial Arts and action film star or at least one of them!

as for the fighter thing, well, lots of MMA fighters trained with him and has called that "He's legit". So i guess that plays in his favor.
