Only one Debussy album (Images, Children' Corner, etc.) is known to me and it is indeed a favorite. I am especially impressed at how Seong-Jin Cho, with his superb artistry and genuine understanding of Debussy's world, is able to give each of the 17 pieces its own truly unique, convincing and authentic character.
Golliwog's Cakewalk was my recital piece my Junior year of high school at the age of 15. I wish I could have played it this well! Such feeling this young man portrays! His touch is superb!
@@ceazria2499 I hope you're having fun with it...it is a fun piece! I love hearing that there are young pianists out there learning to play the music of the masters. Good for you! Whatever you decide to do in your future, I think you will remember your piano years as good ones. Good luck!
I learned it at 14 and the sheet music had caricatures in blackface and I always thought that was weird.... so I googled it and turns out this song is offensive
I am a pianist who studied with William Westney and all I can say about this performance is "Timeless". Thank you for bringing this music to life. I love your playing.❤
SJC embodies who Chopin was and plays French music so well. Asian, but French in musical training - much like Chopin. Born in Poland, never losing his sense of self but inherently French also. Just incredible. The best artists leave their homeland to learn about the world. This is so evident in their communication with us listeners. Bravo!

Played this piece decades ago, when I was in my teens. Sounds like a different piece altogether! Cho is brilliant; not like my performance at all! Thsnk you, Cho, for showing me how it should sound!
omg I see what you mean after looking to the sheet music, 1:16 is that 'A F E Eb' motif from the prelude, didn't have any idea Debussy would do this (especially in such a piece), thanks for pointing this out :D

Well I think any kind of musical talent or giftedness is an instinctive and visceral thing. It’s from the soul. You can study musical composition but you can’t create anything if it is not within your spirit to do so.
I just listened to Debussy's own playing of this song, and I thinkSeong-Jin Cho has brought out more nuance that the composer did. It might be partly because of the difference in recording qualities, but really, this is more than perfection, it is inspiration. I am glad to be able listen to both!
I played this when I was 12. Now I'm 18 and tackling some crazy hard pieces. But I have to say, there is a lot of emotion and beautiful touches in this performance! Congratulations!
me encanta su estilo porque se me figura un niño con juguete nuevo, o disfrutando de un gran y delicioso helado. Se nota qué disfruta y saborea lo que interpreta al piano. Seong Jin- Cho, me delcaro tu fan
The obvious enjoyment you feel when you play this fun pearl is contagious. I like the way your hands dance spontaneously on the keyboard. This is a ragtime piece that imitates the banjo. And the B section has Wagner's leitmotif from his opera Tristan und Isolde which I find pretty sensual. And the cakewalk was a dance developed by the end of the 19th century in which the best dancer won a big cake. Your approach is absolutely accurate. Just one comment: the FF (fortissimos) are, in my opinion a little bit too Forte. Anyway, it's a great interpretation. You definitely won the cake! (ha ha). I would love to hear you play Debussy's arabesque number 1 (E major) I think it is the most beautiful piece that Debussy composed (after claire de lune) and probably one of the most beautiful short pieces ever composed. I really identify myself with it. Bravo!!
That is fantastic, I must check out the albums. Incredible control and confidence, mastery over this torturously difficult piece. He's perfectly sober and straight-walking one minute, lurching back and forward the next, just like the drunk rag doll. Tomita's version will always be my favourite because I grew up with Snowflakes Are Dancing but of the piano performances this ranks so high I think only Claude Debussy's own 1913 performance of it is it's equal. Brilliant stuff thanks for uploading.
@@deluxedjsireland224 Of course this piece by Debussy is musically and technically challenging, but to call it “torturously difficult” is to put it in the same category as pieces by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Ravel, or Brahms - the real warhorses of the piano repertoire. This three minute piece is by no means a torture to play, it is actually quite enjoyable :)
The pieces name may no longer be PC, but the playfulness and immediacy are clear, especially in this rendition. Reminds me that I should have learned this when I used to play the piano. 🎼👏🏾🌟❤
i found out only today that cakewalk means "very easy task" but also "dance contest with a cake prize" so this title means golliwogg is dancing to win a cake😁😆 that is so cute😍

Cho makes the piece so exciting and fun to listen to! If Debussy himself heard this performance he would be amazed
My father used to play this for me on our upright piano when I was a child. Brings back good memories.
Even in this small lovely piece of composition there is something forever and beautiful only Debussy can create.
He is building his own individuality.
