I lived there in the late 70's. Was a forester with Potlatch. Used to run up the grade with a running buddy. I moved away 40 years ago and haven't been back. Your video brings back good memories...ahh the endorphins from that hill.
I was born and raised in Lewiston. I no longer live there, however I still have fond memories of driving up and down the hill many, many times during my life. When I do get home for a visit, which isn't as often as I'd like to, I always try to make the time to drive both up and down it. I still love the "Old Spiral Highway" as it is called by the local area residents. Thank you for making this video! :)
Hey Jeb, How is the drinking water there? How is Lewiston for growing a garden? Is it terribly hot in the Summer? I hear the Winter is quite nice there. If I wanted to retire there from Western Montana could I adjust to the scenery? Would it be to much a Culture shock?
I lived in Lewiston when I was a kid back from 1948 to 1953 and remember the hill very well. At times I got carsick riding up it my dad drove it pretty fast. A friend and I hiked the hill to the top, his dad was supposed to meet us there at the cafe but never showed up so we had to walk all the way back down, it started to snow and it was pretty miserable. But thinking back on it now it was a good memory from many great memories of living in Lewiston.
Commander Cody's 1972 Hot Rod Lincoln was originally written about a road race headed to the top in the early 1950s. A guy named Charlie Ryan and a buddy tore up that thing. www.songfacts.com/facts/commander-cody-and-his-lost-planet-airmen/hot-rod-lincoln
Growing up in Lewiston late 50s to 1963 we would drive as fast as possible up and down. During those years there wasn’t any houses or businesses , there was nothing until you summited. We waited for trucks to rollover then we’d fly up the hill and salvage twinkies and loafs of bread, on and on, but never the chips.
Just drove it for the first time, was an absolute blast in a sporty car
Wow I can't believe how much it has grown

The cafe is now a bed and breakfast or wine tasting place. Haven't been there in a few years to look at it.

What a phenomenal road. Get a little dizzy watching it tho, especially when sped up!

The hill out of White Bird is even cooler. Especially on a motorcycle.
