I obtained one this year and also went with the sapphire sandwich just because I didn't want to worry about scratching the glass up and love the view of the mechanics in the case back.
I think your assessment is spot on. It does have a vintage feel. I think even the Black Bay feels more modern and a bit more substantial. In any case, this is an awesome watch. I think I will get one soon. Excellent take, as always Bruce!
I've heard people say this was their 1st good watch purchase. It was also their last, it's that good and pleasing to own. Btw, that intro was out of this world.
I love this watch. I totally agree about the sapphire sandwich being a better choice, especially as a daily driver. Mine ran +3 out of the box, and +4 after the first service. One gripe I have is that I wish the the entire case was brushed. It seems more fitting for a tool watch, and the polished lugs pick up scratches very easily. However, the Speedy is one of those watches that looks great with some wear so a few character marks are no big deal.

Ok.. well... here is my position on the Speedmaster MOTFM!!!! It belongs in every collection. It is ICONIC. And of the choices.. the best is the sapphire sandwich. The display back is phenomenal. The the damage resistance alone is worth it. The upgraded decoration is a must. If you view the hesalite as a must have.. get the Sapphire sandwich and have the crystal replaced with hesalite. Much easier than him getting the hesalite and then missing out on that beautiful movement. Now.. if you are going zero G and in an environment where shards of sapphire floating around in an enclosed capsule.. then hesalite it is. I have the newest Seamaster with the METAS Coaxial escapement. It’s no silver bullet and my speedmaster keeps comparable time. Guys.. either way.. go get a Speedmaster MOTFM while you can at these prices. It will be a classic and will keep its value. Fancy pants “upgrades” be damned. Get a piece of history into your collection. Nice video Bruce.

Just finally picked up the hesalite 1861. Oh my lord I love it... that gorgeous flat dial really makes the hands pop. I wear mine on straps, so the bracelet is not an issue.... it's just stunning and a good price for now
When (ok, if) I ever make enough money to start shopping in the +$4K market, this would be the second watch I purchase. The first would be an Aqua Terra (for its versatility, water resistance, and date), but this exact watch would be next. I'm glad the classic Hesalite model still exists, for all the people that love the Speedy Pro based on its NASA connection, but I've always felt the sapphire sandwich was the better "civilian" choice. A hesalite crystal may be important if you need to avoid crystal fragments in zero G, but personally I'll take the extra scratch resistance and thinner profile. And once you flip it over, and price increases are suddenly completely worth it. Definitely agree the movement specs leave something to be desired, no matter how pretty it might be, so I'm glad to hear the 3861 (basically a METAS 1863) is coming soon. I've hoped this would happen ever since the calibre was released with the Apollo 11 50th, preferably with the new ceramic bezel at the same time. That said, while I am expecting a slight price increase, it better not be the 45% price jump seen with the Apollo 11 50th. The Hesalite model better remain unchanged though.
I have a blue Seamaster, a black Seamaster Pro and just added the Speedmaster sandwich. I wear the blue Seamaster the most, but also have a couple of Rolexes, Tag Heuers and a Panerai. The watch most worn is the Apple Watch to track my workouts.
Several months back, I got a great deal on an unworn El Primero Classic Cars. I had been looking for a chronograph and this one was there and for a price I couldn't refuse. Looking at the Speedy in this video, I'm reminded of why. I can sit and stare at these movements for hours. Like the Speedmaster, I love the story around the El Primero. Both have a rich history. I'm going to take the girls to the Garage Grill soon, so I'll have to wear it. Cars and chronographs go together! Still loving your videos!

Looking at that movement is a thing to behold, but being such an OCD guy about accuracy I think i'd be willing to wait to see what the next version will be. I'm glad you are making it clear to us that the time to buy this one is now, because I doubt many people are that aware of the upcoming price hikes.

The omega website says that this watch is COSC and METAS certified, not sure why the video says it isn’t? Is it only the latest 2021 version to have these certs?
I do really like the caseback on the saphire version, but for me it had to be the hesalite. It gives much more of a warmer softer tone to the dial compared to the saphire, also the saphire has that milky ring that at some angles looks like an alloy insert. If I were to wear it as a daily I would have gone with the saphire, either way both fantastic .
I had a tough time trying to decide between the two. My son liked the sapphire case back better so I went that way. He will be receiving all of my watches one day so his input was taken into consideration.
I want one at some point, though I am really curious to see what updates they do to this soon. I fear you're right about this moving closer to $10K, which would be a damn shame. One of the reasons I like it is it's not the insane cost of the Daytona (list price, not counting after market), not to mention the history.
what amaze me is that companies like zenith and omega do very good watches, rise their prices but stil...they don't implement a micro adjustment clasp. For what i'm paying that should be granted. When i look at models like this speedmaster, an El primero or a defy classic on bracelet i always wonder why i should buy a 5k+ euro watch if it's not comfortable throughout the day. There are cheaper watches that can offer that experience and i'm leaning toward the more the days go on
I have slightly smaller wrist than yours, bought the reduced first, but ended up with the professional, it fits very nicely. Just overall perfect proportions
Wrong Time Watch there you go, I have tried on the snowflake multiple times. One thing for sure is the speedy wears smaller than the snowflake, both on bracelet of course. Not sure about how the snowflake wears on straps though
Great review Bruce, I have the hesalite professional, got it about 4 years ago for a great price. I think it has had 2 price increase since then. So should be good value to me. But that does not matter, because I promised it to my son. I just love it, and it looks great in any situation. For me it's the best Omega to own, just simply because of the NASA history.

Excellent review. Totally agree with you. This was the dream watch for me. However then I understood that something should stay as a dream. May be my aquaterra 38 or OP36 are not the iconic watches however but they are much more reliable watches.
I don't know what it is about these but the indices markers and small bracelet links don't seem like they "line up" to me.. the way the hour markers are sunk between two planes make it look misaligned to me at certain angles.. the same with the small polished links.. they look offset to me... am i imagining this or is like optical allusion? contrast this with a dial that has a metal plane and applied markers with 3 link bracelet.. there's nowhere that lines don't "match up"... I want to love this but I need help with my ocd!
I would probably say that 1861 is only a more decorated version of the 861. So is 1863 and so on. The reason that it has such bad accuracy is that it sticks to its original specifications, since the year 1968. If a patent of mechanical work is that old, and it keeps around +10 secs a day, it is quite impressive, thinking that atomic time is only an official thing in 1970. In addition, I would recommend people to buy second hand on these speedsters. FOIS versions and Speedmaster professionals versions are both quite good deals, going around $2500 - $3500. They are easily serviceable by experienced watch smiths, and can run for a long time!
Congrats on the watch. I prefer other Omega models as the speedy is quite dull. But I’d get the sapphire too if at all. The speedmaster with the meteorite dial is cool.
Everyone talking about WR but the new production guarantees 50m so you can swim with it. Also if its accurate enough for apollo 13 its accurate enough for dailywear
50 meters doesn't mean you should or can take it that deep. It's about tolerances. If you want a watch you can swim with get a diver. 100% i wouldn't be swimming with this, Bruce's advice is spot on. Jump in water from height or splash you arm with force and water could potentially get in through pressure (unlike a dive watch hence the screw down crown). That's more the risk than just submerging it in a pool of water which yes you would be ok with.
You can purchase the adjustable claps like on the speedy racing chrono or the seasmaster. Local AD or EBay has them available. Not sure if the new speedy would jump up to 10k. Could see it around the 6k range though.
Love Speedys. I ended up with a Mark II Reissue for a lot of the reasons you mentioned Bruce: chronometer certified, silicon hairspring, co-axial, etc etc. And it's just a little bit more off-beat than the Speedy Pro. The Sapphire sandwich is definitely impressive.
Bear in mind that if you have the skill and patience you can get much better accuracy. When I bought mine 13 years ago it was running +12 on average but after it was out of warranty I regulated down to +3. Unfortunately I now need to think about having it serviced so will probably have to do it all over again 🤔
To us watch enthusiasts, every watch we buy is an emotionnal purchase more than anything else. This one, to me, is the grail of the emotionnal purchases. For everything it is, and is not. I could live without that stupid box though haha. I'd enjoy it 5mins than I have to put it somewhere. And I can't be the only one who just hate wasting space to store a useless box, that added some 2 or 300 dollars to the price, on top of that.
I have the Hesalite and love it. It's not the most accurate or high tech watch I have but it just looks and feels damn cool. I hate bracelets so mine went in the box never to be seen again. I will say though, mine is a PITA to wind. I keep most of my watches wound and ready but I only wind this one up when I want to wear it.
There are numerous Patek movements that don't even hack and their prices are substantially more than the speedmaster. With the speedmaster you can turn the hands in reverse and "hack" the movement to sync to an atomic clock.
I'm not into chronographs so I'm glad i didn't have to make the choice between sapphire and acrylic version! would be difficult. great intro and review Bruce!
I'm quite sure it will be all the same size... if they are bringing two size options, they need to make two movements which is stupid expensive... or they just change the case size.. but why would you pick a bigger size then...? Cannibalism..
Good review Bruce. I’ve got an older hesalite Omega Speedmaster moon watch & I love it! I do love an exhibition case back but how often do you actually look at it or enjoy it?... These watches are still a stunning design.😎👍🏼
Here's a suggestion for Omega I can't believe more people don't make: Why not a DOMED sapphire on their Speedmaster!?!? It would look more like the historical Hesalite Speedies while still having the durability of sapphire. Domed sapphire costs more than boxed, but even my Seagull 1963 has domed sapphire, only costs a tenth of a Speedy, and has no milky ring!
@@lipinglin1994 Thanks to China sapphire crystals are now dirt-cheap. A flat sapphire crystal costs about $15, a double-domed sapphire for an SKX can be had for $30-40. For a Speedmaster that costs THOUSANDS of dollars, do you really think that an extra $15 would kill their profits?

However, if you can find me a sapphire crystal that looks like the dome and can be switched onto the Speedmasters line, I'll switch it over on my FOIS any minute :) I think the community will also be very happy to get one of these. If there is no existing, and with your expertise, probably start a business that sells these kind of kits. I think the community will be happy to purchase and mod their speedmaster's with a domed sapphire crystal.

Or watch one of the MANY UA-cam videos where people discuss how they modded their Seiko SKX watches and how much it cost. But people generally do this on cheap watches because it voids the warranty! Luxury buyers also seem to want to maintain the "authenticity" of their watches and don't mod them with third-party parts. (I'll also note that Rolex has sued companies that have modded Rolex watches as counterfeiters.) Anyway, the whole point of my original comment is that Omega could easily eliminate one of the biggest complaints about the sapphire Speedies -- that milky ring and ahistorical look because they use a box sapphire -- and it would cost them little. I'm guessing the reason they don't change is inertia -- if it is selling well now, why change it? It's the same reason Rolex took fifteen years to slim the lugs on the Submariner!
In my opinion, this watch truly comes alive as a luxury piece with the black leather strap, worn with a nice suit. It immediately jumps in price and status to the naked eye. Unfortunately, that strap and buckle are crazy expensive.
Just curious about where you take your circumference measurement on your wrist: above the knuckle or below the knuckle? I measure above the knuckle (meaning on the elbow side of the knuckle). --Michael

Hi Bruce and gang, anyone compared this one directly to the '57 iteration with the silver bezel and also saphire sandwich? Specwise seems that one is really chunky... yet video's appear it to wear quite slender.
I remember back in 1980 a speedmaster could be had for £300. The average office worker in the UK took home about £450 per month. Before 2010 I'm sure you could buy a new or fairly new speedmaster for about £2500. Nowadays they're over £4000? Something wrong somewhere.

I watch and weep knowing they will cause issues and then people who brought them in the hype will realise Seiko developed quartz for a good reason. I'm all for the charm and complete originality of the hesalite but I'd personally absolutely go with the sapphire sandwich.

The moon watch is the perfect gateway into obtaining the unobtanium SS Rolex.

Really?, once at the omega boutique they told me to never go swimming or even shower with the moon watch.... so now I am confused!
Can you guys just Google what the WR rating actually means for once and stop assuming 50m means you can go 50m deep.

Jump in water from height or splash you arm with force and water could potentially get in through pressure (unlike a dive watch hence the screw down crown). That's more the risk than just submerging it in a pool of water which yes you would be ok with.
You can purchase the adjustable claps like on the speedy racing chrono or the seasmaster. Local AD or EBay has them available.
Not sure if the new speedy would jump up to 10k. Could see it around the 6k range though.
The new 321 is like 14k. I could see retail being 8500 or 9000

Love Speedys. I ended up with a Mark II Reissue for a lot of the reasons you mentioned Bruce: chronometer certified, silicon hairspring, co-axial, etc etc. And it's just a little bit more off-beat than the Speedy Pro. The Sapphire sandwich is definitely impressive.
Bear in mind that if you have the skill and patience you can get much better accuracy. When I bought mine 13 years ago it was running +12 on average but after it was out of warranty I regulated down to +3. Unfortunately I now need to think about having it serviced so will probably have to do it all over again 🤔

This one, to me, is the grail of the emotionnal purchases. For everything it is, and is not.
I could live without that stupid box though haha. I'd enjoy it 5mins than I have to put it somewhere. And I can't be the only one who just hate wasting space to store a useless box, that added some 2 or 300 dollars to the price, on top of that.
I have the Hesalite and love it. It's not the most accurate or high tech watch I have but it just looks and feels damn cool. I hate bracelets so mine went in the box never to be seen again. I will say though, mine is a PITA to wind. I keep most of my watches wound and ready but I only wind this one up when I want to wear it.

There are numerous Patek movements that don't even hack and their prices are substantially more than the speedmaster. With the speedmaster you can turn the hands in reverse and "hack" the movement to sync to an atomic clock.

Here's a suggestion for Omega I can't believe more people don't make: Why not a DOMED sapphire on their Speedmaster!?!? It would look more like the historical Hesalite Speedies while still having the durability of sapphire. Domed sapphire costs more than boxed, but even my Seagull 1963 has domed sapphire, only costs a tenth of a Speedy, and has no milky ring!
Would be pretty hard for them to go into production consider cost and profits.
@@lipinglin1994 Thanks to China sapphire crystals are now dirt-cheap. A flat sapphire crystal costs about $15, a double-domed sapphire for an SKX can be had for $30-40. For a Speedmaster that costs THOUSANDS of dollars, do you really think that an extra $15 would kill their profits?

However, if you can find me a sapphire crystal that looks like the dome and can be switched onto the Speedmasters line, I'll switch it over on my FOIS any minute :) I think the community will also be very happy to get one of these.
If there is no existing, and with your expertise, probably start a business that sells these kind of kits. I think the community will be happy to purchase and mod their speedmaster's with a domed sapphire crystal.
@@lipinglin1994 I am no expert -- but you can easily fact check my statement by going to eBay and searching for "sapphire crystal SKX" and find those prices. Or watch one of the MANY UA-cam videos where people discuss how they modded their Seiko SKX watches and how much it cost. But people generally do this on cheap watches because it voids the warranty! Luxury buyers also seem to want to maintain the "authenticity" of their watches and don't mod them with third-party parts. (I'll also note that Rolex has sued companies that have modded Rolex watches as counterfeiters.) Anyway, the whole point of my original comment is that Omega could easily eliminate one of the biggest complaints about the sapphire Speedies -- that milky ring and ahistorical look because they use a box sapphire -- and it would cost them little. I'm guessing the reason they don't change is inertia -- if it is selling well now, why change it? It's the same reason Rolex took fifteen years to slim the lugs on the Submariner!

In my opinion, this watch truly comes alive as a luxury piece with the black leather strap, worn with a nice suit. It immediately jumps in price and status to the naked eye. Unfortunately, that strap and buckle are crazy expensive.
I've got the hesalite and would really like to see a hesalite version with a sapphire display back.
Only one thing missing. Micro adjustment on the watch band. Omega needs to work on offering that with all their models.

It sports 50m WR, so yeah it can take a bath. Check the seals every couple of years and you are good to go.

Hi Bruce and gang, anyone compared this one directly to the '57 iteration with the silver bezel and also saphire sandwich? Specwise seems that one is really chunky... yet video's appear it to wear quite slender.
I remember back in 1980 a speedmaster could be had for £300. The average office worker in the UK took home about £450 per month. Before 2010 I'm sure you could buy a new or fairly new speedmaster for about £2500. Nowadays they're over £4000? Something wrong somewhere.

I watch and weep knowing they will cause issues and then people who brought them in the hype will realise Seiko developed quartz for a good reason.
