  • Steffi Graf: '99 French Open Final. Here is the third game of the second set in which Hingis receives a point penalty for crossing over to Steffi's side. The controversy began with a disputed line call. It is unclear in the replay whether the ball is in or out. Hingis crossed over to the other side of the net because she believed that the chair umpire had not sighted the correct mark. The crossing over was against the rules. The tournament referee will end up explaining this to Martina. Because of a previous code violation for racquet abuse, the second violation resulted in a point penalty. You can see what led to the first code violation in the clip titled "Steffi Graf Forehand High Volley." The absurdity of what happened is that Hingis was up a set and a break in the second set (2-0) when this all happened. French 1999

Oh, my, did I have fun watching this match and Hingis' debacle, and of course Graf's superb triumph. Hingis' career was never the same after this final, she never got over it and didn't manage to turn what was a lesson into something positive for her career and her maturity.

When the age and experience came into play,Graf use her backhand slice alot in here, and she made Hingis run allover the court ...great strategy :)

I still remember this match at that time I used to be a fan of Steffi Graf because I like her style and calm demeanor unlike some of the players at her time.
I watched how Graf reached her peak by beating top seeded players of her times, then comes this girl from Swiss and she was really good player, but this is the match which she will regret rest of her life, everyone was supporting her because she was underdog but in a moment of anger she just not lost match she lost her career right there. She was one setup up and 2 games up but this little argument after which she never picks up and lost this match and rest is history. I hardly saw Graf ever get into that kind of arguments that's the reason she still consider as great Woman player.

That is why steffi graf is always one of the greatest player to grace the womens game.I have never seen her get angry or dispute a call for a long time and even when she loses she accept's it gracefully. How i miss her in women's game together with the great navratilova.

I'm not defending Hingis' conduct and don't remember this match, per se, but in her defense:
    A. Hingis was an amazingly creative, brilliant tactician who - for whatever reasons - wasn't able to keep it together.
    B. The shot appeared to be well in - also judging it from Graf's reaction. Also, it didn't even appear that the officials were looking at the correct ball mark.

The ball was in. A turning point. Hingis should still have handled the situation and rest of the match better. A pity things deteriorated so badly from there and that she didn't achieve her full potential in this match and overall career. Steffi had a good attitude and was rightly popular, but i found it sad and uncomfortable to see a player so affected, with an embarrassing reaction and such a hostile crowd (French sports crowds can be merciless- booing French teams too).

No doubt. McEnroe knows what he is talking about. He may have been a loudmouth and a brat out there on court when he played, but he knows the game of tennis inside out. Plus he doesn't have a bias, doesn't criticize anyone and has enthusiasm. What more could you want out of a tennis commentator??

That ball was IN!!!! She had every right to be upset about it. A lot of people call Martina unsportsmanlike. What about the crowd???

You have to watch the whole match, Martina behaved poorly throughout it. Her attitude got worse as it progressed.

An extremely talented player against the best tplayer and competitor in women's tennis history. Hingis had the match in her bag and lost control arguing over a point that was totally irrelevant. In the process he lost support of fans all over the world. A pity. She was the last really talented player in the WTA. After that it has been all brute force.

Hingis was always a bit nutty. She didn't seem to have a 'filter' on when to knock it off. She also made some pretty funny gaffs either intentionally or unintentionally dissing other tennis players of the time (ESPECIALLY Anna Kournikova) in interviews. Amazing Tennis player though, hands down.

@RaleighNC306 Why shouldn't John McEnroe commentate on a women's match, he is a great commentator who has been there, seen it, and done it. It doesn't matter if it's a women's match or a men's match or if it's a woman or a man commentating, as long as they do a good job know what they are talking about, which most of them do.

Don't make excuses Hingis was number 1 ranked for a reason. There is a system to make these rankings and it isn't because some other player wasn't there thats their problem. Hingis was number one in her time for a reason because she was the best that's what number 1 means......

Hingis was a great player, till this match. She destroyed her career right here. She never really played very good again. Then the Williams sisters started playing, and over powered her greatly. She retired shortly after.
Hingis had great control over the ball, she just didn't have the strength to handle powerful shots like the Williams sisters had.
I liked Steffi and Hingis, and I was watching this match live. I couldn't believe what Hingis was doing here. What a meltdown she had.

people are a bit unfair to Hingis. As much as I hate cocaine addicts including Hingis, this match was very sad to watch as everything just went wrong for her.
The incident began days before when Hingis won the semifinals and was asked who did she prefer to play either Seles or Graf and she said it didn't matter because they were both old and slow and she would wipe them in straight sets, so that got her to a rough start against the french crowd. (1/2)

I don't know the first thing about tennis, but why is it considered such bad form to step on the other side of the court. I mean she did in civil way, didn't she? She didn't rush over there to beat on the opponent's head or anything.

  • @elsrdick
    @elsrdick 11 років тому +29

Then the match began and there were a couple of early bad calls in Graf's favor, all of them in reality were good balls for Martina, so that kind of started getting on her nerves. Once the second set began, it looked as Hingis was going to breeze, breaking Graf early and holding easily for a comfortable 2-0 lead, so she was probably aiming for a secure 3-0 lead in this game.
It's quite obvious that after the bad call, the had totally had it with the bad calls and lost it. (2/2)

I'm all for McEnroe commentating, he's generally very good, as you say, but i've still been surprised at times by areas of ignorance, e.g grand slam stats, and some points of law. Then again, nowhere near as surprised as listening on the radio to some former cricket players' ignorance of former greats and cricket history. Contrast that with a few British football commentators spewing out stats and facts like walking encyclopedias (too much so, really).

Hingis became number one thanks to Seles' and Graf's absence, she didn't deserve this ranking. She had such a horrible attitude on courts, she was arrogant, showing no respect for her opponents, referees and tennis in fact! Graf and Seles were the real queens.

It is pretty obvious Martina Hingis new what she was doing and is quite disrespectful. I didn't know she could be such a brat and nobody can touch steffi graf when it comes to on the court presence. And i must admit i'm a big fan of martina hingis, for some reason she was always my favourite. I don't follow tennis religiously but when i do watch i always like to see martina play. I just started watching some tennis this year and the Kerber vs Lisicki was amazing.

    Seles was dominated by Hingis.
Hingis already defeated Seles very badly in their first match in 1996 just right after Seles won the Aus Open that year.

Hingis was a very talented player, but really lacked of elegance and fairplay on a court. here, u couldn't say if the ball was foul or in, hawkeye camera didn't exist, so 90% were angry but should always moveon, here she persisted in a very arrogant way... i also remember when she said "homophobic" allusions towards mauresmo just before the australian open final. i agree to say that graf, everts and seles will remain the women stars of the sport

Most of them don't know what they are talking about ! And I agree John McEnroe sucks ! It 2013... the women's tour should be just that... and should be commentated on by women ! All the commentators do today, is talk over a match.... they do not commentate... seem to be a lost art !
