    Hi Aleister,
Sad to hear! I am a 20 year old Uni student in Canada and have found your lessons very reassuring in my last few months of trying to figure out how my instrument actually works. I'll miss them.
I am learning Jazz guitar because I want to play with my little brother, who's a saxophonist and can play circles around me. I was self-taught growing up and have had to essentially start from scratch recently when it came to learning theory and technique. I can't stress enough how helpful it was to find someone who emphasized starting slow - playing over single chords and drones and such. I'm sure you can relate to the confusion and frustration that comes with trying to take in too much, too quick. Thank you so much for explaining the processes that allow us to internalize this intellectual information on an intuitive and spiritual level; although I'm now learning the "proper" way to do things I still feel the same sensations I did when I was eleven or twelve and just making whatever noises felt the best, not knowing anything's name. The noises are starting to feel familiar now, like old friends.
If you're no longer interested in making lessons, it would be nice to see more videos like this one where you discuss things you've noticed or things you've been working on. Or even just going over your sources, like books or videos that helped you along the way. I really appreciate your teaching style and advice (particularly the closing remark of the single string playing video :^] ).
Thank you for remaining dedicated to your small audience. It's a shame the good stuff is rarely lucrative. I hope all goes well.

Hey there, thank you so much for your comment. I'm really glad to know that my previous videos have been of some help. It's an exciting adventure we're on. It sounds like you are on the right track. I'll certainly be doing more video going forward, and I'll definitely keep your ideas in mind. Feedback like yours is infinitely more valuable than anything of a financial nature, btw.

I've just "met" you on this video for the first time and I find I am absolutely in the same conundrum myself. I am a maths teacher and also a musician and in both worlds, I feel that I know less and less about what students should be doing with their time. I am quite good at knowing what they need to do to pass exams but I'm pretty sure that that's encouraging them to desire the wrong goals. In music I myself am completely lost as to where to continue, I have studied many many years to get to a point where I can accompany flamenco singers and dancers without previous rehearsal, but I want to get better at improvising melodies and a more "jazz-like" approach to music and I find myself practising stuff that I've no idea of when or how it's going to help me or how I am going to incorporate that into my flamenco career.
Anyway, it was nice to hear you and just writing this paragraph has helped me clear my own thoughts. By the way I was also a youtuber for a while and kind of stopped for similar reasons. Now I am only interested in honest people in youtube, not in people selling lessons. Thanks for being honest!

Thanks for your thoughts and perspectives. I had a flamenco lesson while I was in Seville a few years ago. Funnily enough I felt like I had stepped into the bull ring without a sword... My right hand had never felt so weak! All the best with your music.

LMAO, that quote at the beginning is great. Got to love Goodrick's sense of humor. One of your videos popped up in my rec's after searching for Goodrick unitar/single string playing.

Great video, thanks for sharing your journey with us, your honesty is refreshing. 3:27 What did you learn about Baroque music, that made you question the way you thought about music? The void terrifies me. I keep filling it with stuff & ideas :)

Thank you, I sure do appreciate it. I was investigating the way they improvised back then. Partimento, and basso continuo, etc. It seems a lot of the things that I learned in high school and have always taken for granted weren't necessarily the way musicians like Bach were thinking. Broadly speaking I guess it's to do with counterpoint, as opposed to a more static concept of harmony. I don't really understand it well enough at this point to explain it very well.

What a flex! I wonder how many hours did it take to get to this level. I hope you are using it in your live performances, because if not, it's a wasted opportunity.
Most of us, bedroom noodlers, we hardly comprehend the level you pros are at. The ability to talk with sense and play complex stuff in the background makes it very clear!

You're wrong buddy. Studying something for 27 years and discovering that you hardly know anything about it - is a sign of great wisdom and enlightenment. Segovia referee to himself as a student of guitar. To everybody else he was a master. You are far far far ahead of the vast majority brother. Teaching it is just another form of learning. You can't be the judge of wether or not that helps others - that's up to them. Don't give up brother - it's hugely valuable to others.

I spent a month on the piano transposing my jazz guitar vocab to the piano right hand. I play better jazz on the piano now than I can on the guitar (minus the left hand!). I have found it considerably easier to internalise musical vocabulary on the piano. I can also express rhythm in a way that I couldn't on the guitar. The guitar is hindering me from music.

    • @music_magus

Guitar is certainly less obvious than the piano in some ways. Good luck with your keyboard adventure!

If the UA-cam thing doesn't feel like it's for you, that's okay. You don't owe us anything. I know it's a lot of work to make videos and it's especially difficult to deliver a consistent enough content schedule to build an audience while competing against 3.7 million videos being uploaded to UA-cam every day.
I will say this, though, when it comes to jazz and guitar playing in general, you're one of the very few people who capture the process of developing that intuitive aural relationship to the music and really taking things back to first principles in a way that feels music and not just another math problem. A lot of teachers in this space, to me, feel like they're constructing the music from theoretical building blocks. But then every demonstration of the application of it, even the simple stuff, there's a whole dimension they're not capturing. This is where I think your approach to teaching fills in the gap, if that makes sense. There's a sense of play and exploration to your approach that I personally find really refreshing and that has actually helped me find inroads where elsewhere I could not. A lot of other teachers on here just made me better at talking about the music rather than actually playing it.
Regardless of how you feel about your own knowledge and where you're at, you should remember that everyone at every level will feel what you do. There's always more to learn. It's good to strive to know more and learning more deeply. But that doesn't mean your knowledge and perspective isn't valuable to the community. Even if you have decided call it quits here on UA-cam, just know that your contribution has added value here and has helped people. I am very grateful that you have shared what you have on here.

Hey Kevan, always great to hear from you. I really value what you said in your comment. I think moving forward I can find a way to continue to fill that gap, without feel like I'm competing with (and adding to) all the noise that's around. I think I'll continue to put out content which aren't necessarily guitar lessons per se. We shall see... Take care. AjC

Your apologists have come out 'en masse'. Jimmy Bruno and Bruce Forman, to mention just two of so many, have a similar following. I find this all pervasive tendency of UA-cam viewers both fascinating and disturbing. A person may learn a bit about guitar playing from UA-cam, but to learn about MUSIC and to become a MUSICIAN is something else entirely. Anybody who believes otherwise is sooner or later going to end up very disappointed.

    • @music_magus
      @music_magus  Рік тому

Thanks for your comment! I don't know too much about Jimmy Bruno's concept (apart from in a passing sense), but I've definitely had a laugh at some of his more 'heated' takes on the music scene. I have had a bit more to do with Bruce, seen him play in concert a bunch, been to a few clinics and even took a one on one lesson with him when he was visiting the Jazz School where I used to teach. A formidable musician, an a super funny dude.
