A beautiful and compassionate documentary. It often takes an outsider to capture the living spirit of the nomadic West. I love the commentary from 54:40 to 55:25 a love note to the beauty and mystery of wild places.
Used to make my living riding bulls and bucking horses, spent a few years tramping around Yuma and Quartsite. Have about 2 million miles logged driving trucks OTR also. I thought this documentary was awesome! Thanks for sharing it.
Great documentary! Being a pro rodeo cowboy myself, I think it's awesome that you were able to get a more behind the scenes look at what we are actually like.
Eight years in the making, American Nomads is a ninety minute documentary film written and hosted by Richard Grant, and inspired by his book American Nomads (Ghost Riders UK). The film takes the form of a 6,000 mile journey around the American Southwest in search of modern-day American nomads. Why have they chosen to live a wandering life, and what do they gain and sacrafic? Characters include rodeo cowboys, a traveling preacher, punk kids riding freight trains, a Wall Street drop-out, a wild man of the mountain backcountry, and retirees in motorhomes. Original music by Ross Godfrey of Morcheeba.
Interesting documentary! Loved the variety of different people you interviewed /showed! Heart hurt for the kid train hopping at the end.....hope he's doing ok.
Hi Sam. Thank you for having this documentary uploaded, I loved to see it. I am a German living in Mexico since 11 years, traveling a lot in Mexico and USA, and Richard Grant really nailed it, what a true and amazing documentary. Just added the link to this video on my Facebook page. As it looks like that I cannot send you a message here, nor find you on Facebook, please allow me to ask my question public: I would like to present this documentary to some Mexican friends of mine, but the subtitles (cc) are not activated, and I kindly would like to ask you to ad this option, please ? Any chance :-) ? Best regards from beautiful San Miguel de Allende
The guy he picked up in the beginning of the vid, Shelton Parker, looks a lot like the actor Richard Farnsworth. I think the last movie he was in from 1999 is The Straight Story. I believe Mr. Farnsworth passed in 2000.
I live close by Bakersfield. its funny, I guess its a well known spot in California but its in the middle of nowhere, and gets a bad rep by all the neighboring cites.

I agree. And had the same experience. "Not scenery anymore. But a living breathing place. I still can't get it out of my system."
yeah, watched this a few times, probably watch it again. connects me back to people and places
I've been watching this for years and love coming back to it
Excellent video, thanks for the upload. Grant provides a compelling story without getting over-involved or being critical.
Been looking for this since I first watched January 2019

I love Richard Grant's work. Hadn't realised there was a documentary too. Thank-you for uploading it.
That was fantastic, really enjoyed it. There is so much that is unknown to the average American about the many ways that we live.
Great documentary! Being a pro rodeo cowboy myself, I think it's awesome that you were able to get a more behind the scenes look at what we are actually like.
Excellent. Thank you.

If my dog Monte pass away from old age this is going to be my life the reservation is to much pain for me. 😊
Does anybody know where Richard Bear is now?
Anyone know the instrumental music that plays at the end?

The driver has grace and a calling...he ought to be a pastor and take care of the sheep
I stood in line and left my name
Took about six hours or so
Well, the man just grinned like it was all a game
Said they'd let me know
I put in my time till the Pocono line
Shut down two years ago
I was staying at the mission till I met Marie
Now I can't stay there no more
Fella 'cross town said he's lookin' for a man
To move some old cars around
Maybe me and Marie could find a burned-out van
And do a little settlin' down
Aw, but I'm just dreamin'
I ain't got no ride
And the junkyard's a pretty good ways
That job's about a half week old besides
It'd be gone now anyway
Unemployment says I got no more checks
And they showed me to the hall
My brother died in Georgia some time ago
I got no one left to call
Summer wasn't bad below the bridge
A little short on food that's all
Now I gotta get Marie some kind of coat
We're headed down into fall
I used to play the mouth harp pretty good
Hustled up a little dough
But I got drunk and I woke up rolled
A couple of months ago
They got my harp and they got my dollar
Them low life so and so's
Harps cost money and I ain't got it
It's my own fault I suppose
Ah, the Pocono's down but the Chesapeake's runnin'
Two freights everyday
If it's just me I'd be headed South
But Marie can't catch no train
She's got some pain and she thinks it's a baby
Says we gotta wait and see
In my heart I know it's a little boy
Hope he don't end up like me
Well, the man's still grinnin' says he lost my file
I gotta stand in line again
I want to kill him but I just say no
I had enough of that line, my friend
I head back to the bridge
It's getting kinda cold
I'm feelin' too low down to lie
I guess I'll just tell Marie the truth
Hope she don't break down and cry
Marie she didn't wake up this morning
She didn't even try
She just rolled over and went to heaven
My little boy safe inside
I laid them in the sun where somebody'd find them
Caught a Chesapeake on the fly
Marie will know I'm headed South
So's to meet me by and by
Ah, Marie will know I'm headed south
So to meet me by and by
“ZRO LEFT.”
Horses were here before the Spanish *eyeroll
Good doc though we are liking it

Bit of a negative opinion of your own there
That's not even remotely true, he married later and his wife and daughter are American.
