I'm 58 years old, and grew up in the acapella Church of Christ. I'm still attending, and I love and appreciate my experience there. I am also a CofC preacher's wife of 20 years. My husband and I are on the same page regarding instrumental music, and neither does he preach instrumental music for obvious reasons. I was taught as a young believer and learner of God's word to study the scriptures mindfully. You know, like the Bereans did. After much study (years), I have come to believe that perhaps Jesus didn't have a discourse about IM because it was understood IM was commonly used to worship and praise God and his goodness. The books of Psalms, Amos, and Nehemiah, to name a few demonstrates that. I read that Paul is urging us to be wise with our time instead of using our time to be unwise and practice sin He commands singing as a righteous and holy use of our time - Ephesians 5:1-20. Also, there are three different expressions on how to sing from the heart...psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. For instance what is a Psalm? Thanks for taking a moment out of your time to read all this! I'm just wondering if any one else is curious about if the bible is really teaching the doctrine we have always believed for hundreds of years. I wouldn't mind participating in a loving discussion. Is Paul really teaching about IM? Because He Lives, K.

Saying something isn't in the scriptures is not allowed is an argument from silence.
Is Eph 5:19 even about worship instructions? Here's the full text of 5:18-21:
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
The context here does not permit interpreting verse 19 as some sort of exclusive list of worship activities.
In addition, Ephesians is addressed to a specific church. If the Ephesian church did not use instruments then Paul obviously would not mention them.

Everything done in 5:19 happens to be words out loud and with a melody, so that the other people singing the exact same words and using the same tune will be encouraged, plus it is to be addressed, not to the other singers but to the Lord, while you are simultaneously thinking about the good things God has done for you. If that isn’t a description of worship what is? 🛐😃☝🏾

No, ephesians 5:19 is not even remotely related to worship service. It was referring to encouraging your fellow church member in a generic sense. You can do that in the car with your sister in Christ or in the kitchen with your brother in christ. What the Ephesians 5:19 verse is referring to is not a "command" to every Christian nor is it a "necessary example" for everyone to copy. The Bible reader needs to discern what is command and what is very situation-specific.

Most of the congregations I have known over some 50+ years have had unusually good singing. Members grow up singing since childhood, they learn to sing harmony at church. That may be why the churches of Christ have produced so many singing stars-in rock, in soul, in country. They are way overrepresented. BUT, I knew one place where one elders wife was incredibly loud, painfully loud. And she only had ONE note. Most tone death person I ever knew. I learned quickly not to sit one or two pews in front of her. I thought she sounded horrible. What was I to do? KEPT MY MOUTH SHUT! She WAS NOT singing to ME! She was singing to God who said “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD”! Every note is song to God. I’m not the purpose we sing. God is!!! And God made her voice so who am I to judge. (I discovered the whole congregation had really come to love her loud one note. Still, I’m not., Sitting right behind her.🤣😂🎶🛐

IT's pretty clear to me. Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do it ALL in the name of the Lord. Not everyone has the same gifts, and I will not devise doctrines based on silence of instruments in the New Testament. The majority of the Psalms were written to be "accompanied" with stringed instruments, and it has nothing to do with whether or not there is a temple or church. We all, as members of the body of Christ, do not have the same gifts, or calling.
I agree, if you are giving props to a musician, then you need to check yourself. If you give glory to God, and you happen to be skillful on an instrument, you can't deny that people who KNOW the words of that song will give ALL the glory to God when hearing it, just as much as when we read His Word.
Don't make doctrines from silence. Otherwise, we shouldn't drive cars to church.

As an example, if I asked you to sing me a song and you did so using a guitar did you not do as I asked?

I agree DLS, we can't use the argument that since we all can't play an instrument, they can't be used. We can't all preach, we can't all read Scriptures publicly, we can't all lead a prayer. It would make more sense to support the use of instruments on grounds that every person has a unique gift given to them by God; and that your gift is to be employed for the benefit and encouragement of the congregation (I Corinthians 12).

Not everyone can play an instrument, same with singing. Not every one is a teachers or a prophet or can be an elder etc, but those who are called and gifted / talented by the Lord. The NT doe snot exclude Mechanical Instruments at all, but it does say you are to use your heart in worship. So worship is anything done with God's blessing, to bless God and not for the church or organisation.

They may not be able to sing well or better than another person but God requires every believer to sing from the heart. Instruments God never asked for it in worship. Splitting hairs over how we should praise and worship God in spirit and in truth.
There's a lot of things that we do now on this modern day culture that was or wasn't practiced in biblical times. So my question is this, if musical instruments were not allowed in the Christian church because New Testament scripture doesn't reveal it, why is any modern technology (tv screens, audio visual equipment, video cameras, etc) used as a means of enhancement on our worship services?
So based off his explanation that since everyone cannot play a musical it shouldn't be allowed and could serve as a distraction, wouldn't that same argument apply to those who serve in the audio/visual ministries as well? In fact it's even more difficult to "worship" in service for those working in that area because their focus is on capturing what's taking place in the sanctuary as to not miss their assignments. 😳

Thank you for response. We hope to respond in the same loving spirit in which you responded to us.
1.) Arguments - you mentioned some arguments that were not mentioned in the video like - "distractions" or "not allowed". So we won't address them here.
2.) The explanation in the video is- how can you properly implement an "ACT" of worship with no scripture. The Bible is completely silent on the subject. How can one set rules or guidelines in the absence of scripture. That would make one a "Law Maker".
3.) Audio Visual and Sound would be put in the same category as Air Condition and Cushion Seats. We don't worship God with cushion seats but we do use them personally. Just like someone uses reading glasses to read the bible or use LED Lights to see.
4.) Cain and Able is one of our examples - It doesn't matter what you bring to worship. God has made clear in scripture what he wants and doesn't want. Cain's offering was rejected because it was not what God wanted. At the end of the day, God never said instruments is what He wanted. You can still bring them if you desire, and on that day He will let us all know what He word said.
This video is not a hate against instruments but a promotion of what is actually in the Bible. Thank You.

@@NorthColonyCoC I feel like a lot of people today put the emphasis on what *they* want instead of what God wants. We have two examples in the Bible of where someone took it upon themselves to make a decision based on what they wanted or what they thought was right: 1. Uzzah, when he reached out to steady the Ark of the Covenant. In his mind, this seemed like the right thing to do. In God's mind, it was disobedience. 2. King David wanted to build God's temple. Even though he had such a grand gesture in his heart in glorying God, God did not want it that way, because David was a man of war.
Worship isn't about what *we* want or what *we* think is appropriate. It's about what God has authorized for us. Nowhere in the NT do we read about someone using an instrument in worship, but we are told multiple times to sing spiritual songs. It's also interesting that the word "acapella" means "in the way of the church".

I just want to know what string you have in a heart. I know make melody don't me sing because you already have singing in the verse. So it must mean to pull, twitch, twang, or play. When God tells us what he wants, we don’t need to add or subtract. The question of instruments has to be answered, because it the root of it is evil.

By all respect, I find little agreement on this teaching. Instruments were used in the old testament and the new one never opposes it. Tattoos also were prohibited in the old testament only and never mentioned in the new one. Are they OK now? Certainly not. The OT still matters safe for the verses that show what Christ changed.

Nowhere in God's law does it say you can't have instrumental music. (The guy in the video said it was b4 the law was given)Jesus was a Jew! He followed the law perfectly! And Jews then and now don't condemn it in their law! Non instrumental music is traced back to Alexander Campbell nonsense. Before that you won't find any written history about this stupidity. Stop following Campbell's man-made rules.

Care to explain 2 Chronicles 29:26-30? The music started when the priest offered the burnt offering unto the alter. The music stopped when the burnt offered was finished implying that Christ work is completed. But than we later read Hezekiah commended them to sing praises unto the LORD.

In both Ephesians 5 verse 19 and Colossians 3 verse 16 we see that singing words is the only form of music authorized by God in Christian worship. Therefore, any other type of music is not authorized by
God which includes instrumental music, hand clapping, and mimicking the sound of a musical instrument like a bass guitar and drum with one's voice. Great sermon!

Hello Brother God bless! Few issues with your sermon. First off let’s start by this. If Angels worship in song and with musical instruments in heaven then how is it a distraction from God, Especially when music can help people break free from Bondage reminding them of the Goodness of the Lord ? Then we Have Colossians 1:16 Literally says that “everything” was created for Him.
Would like to also point out that the entire Scripture is “breathed out and Inspired” by God so if worship wasn’t important He wouldn’t have put it in the Bible at all.
Everything can be used for His Glory for a Appointed purpose and time.
From my experience church of Christ sings in vain. Just babbling dongs with no Spiritual connection because it traditional and systematic.
But why argue ? Just wanted to throw a few things out there that including people at our church of Christ believe that people who play musical instruments are going to hell and deceiving themselves and upsetting others with their primal thoughts.
Also we are aware of Praising God in Spirit and in Truth But God have people talents and Gifting for a reason...
king David was able to calm Saul being tormented by a evil spirit by using an instrument.....

      1) FYI Angels sing in the Bible, but I can’t find a place the play harps. 2) people taken to heaven (like John) hear things that sound like harps, but not actual harps. We do find harps, and much, much more in heaven. 3) The children of Israel had 150 hymns which had to be reused for 1500 years. We’re they condemned to babbling, systemic, traditional worship by God Himself. That judgment might be correct but it is not your call-you can’t read the intentions of the heart. 4) Col 1:16. God makes everything and has made a purpose for a purpose-but the purpose might not be for God personally. He made He’ll. He made Satan. Music can be used to promote good causes, but a lot of music was made to help people get to hell. 4) Not all (in fact not many) people in churches of Christ believe playing an instrument sends one to hell. My mom played violin, I was taught piano, my wife plays guitar. None of us think that will result in going to hell. Furthermore, I don’t any longer obey God because I fear he’ll. I obey because I want to give Him what he wants. 5) what is a primal thought? Primal refers not to the quality of a thought, but the age of the thought. Plenty of primal thoughts are true. 6) God has been known to give a man an ability and then command him NOT to use it (1Cor 14:26-28). Just like David calming Saul. Everything has a time and place. Ecc. 3:1.

  • @travisdempster4693
    @travisdempster4693 9 місяців тому

Why, when people are not in line with the truth do they make such irrational arguments. "No one has run to get baptised because a bass player was killing it" some one can say "No one ran to get baptised because the morning greeter was nice"
How is that an argument not to have a greeter?
The authority of scripture says we have freedom in Christ.
It is the Pharisees their Ttaditions and Rules that interfered with peoples relationship with God. "Rule on Rule" so they back slide.
If it is a non issue as this pastor is saying then each should be fully convinced in their own mind. For you are not to judge another mans servant.

    • @NorthColonyCoC
      @NorthColonyCoC  9 місяців тому +2

Thank you for responding. Your rationale is inaccurate and being "convinced in your own mind" does not apply to worship. A greeter is not worship and does not apply. You are assuming instruments are an option. I believe you missed the point of the message...

    • @travisdempster4693
      @travisdempster4693 9 місяців тому

@NorthColonyCoC Thank you for responding. It seems you are making a great number of assumptions (that would not be backed by scriptural authority)
You state that a greeter is not part of worship? Where is your scriptural authority for this? B and Verse.
You seem to have a specific time and designation for "Worship". Again please provide the scriptural authority Book and Verse.
The Bible tells me that Musical Instuments are an intrinsic part of Worship.
Be so kind an look up all the references to "Worship" in the New Testamen (there are not too many) to better understand you can cross reference with the Greek.
Let me know what you find.
And/Or we can continue discussing either way...
      Thanks

Totally misguided and misrepresenting the word of God again. Everyone can’t sing, either but we are all called to make a joyful noise. Some of us are crows, while others of us are nightingales. God looks on the heart. This is yet another example of foolish COC legalism. This is pure (and sad) comedy.

Church of Christ is known very well to the younger generation to bare ignorance which this video continues to show. While and somewhat educated video it’s “I am right” you are wrong teaching your opinion is irrelevant..... Musical instruments are irrelevant and a distraction. God says to bare with those who are of weaker faith and not to be a stumbling block. If someone wants to know you are to love them and tell them to look to the Word of God. I hate how the So called church of Christ is more of a stumbling block to younger believers/Christians because of the wilderness thinking. God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh. Church of Christ has always picked what you feel is right over the truth and is very one sided in the Gospel.
Basketball does not most remind people who God is it is for Human entertainment mostly....
Gospel Music is to lead us back to Christ or to keep us grounded. It is literally about the Gospel.
But who knows basketball can probably bring some people to Christ maybe that is where they first found Him or where God took them to concentrate.
For everything that we do, Do whole heartedly unto God and not unto men.
Wherever He blesses us do unto Him....
if someone wants to scream or shout about the Goodness of the Lord or breakout in dance then so be it.... it is not unto you it is unto The Lord.
