The wild elephants living around the Butthala Kataragama main road are used to get food from the passengers in the vehicles. This has become an ordinary incident to anyone who passes this region in a vehicle. Usually the animals, elephant, wild boar, monkey, sambar become very friendly with humans as a result of giving food to them. The elephants in this area expect food from the passing vehicles and therefor they always stay by the road side for food. Occasionally these elephants attack the vehicles pass through this area. This type of attacks, are reported specially in the night. These elephants never get their regular diet from the forest as they are used to find food from the passing vehicles. These elephants everyday receive food items that are not good for their health, very often they get sick. It is also reported that some elephants are suffering from diabetics due to the high sugar content in the fruits that they eat. Sometimes passengers in the vehicles offer food items to the elephants without removing the packaging in the food. Sometimes elephants die due to this problem. Although the wildlife officials educate the people not to offer food to elephants, only few people follow their instructions. Some drivers offer food to elephants for fun or as an adventure. At present nearly seven elephants and a tusker are used to get food from the passing vehicles. It is with regret that I mention an incident where a mother elephant is training her calf to get food from passing vehicles. Usually elephants prefer to get soft food items rather than food from the jungle. The Kataragama Butthala road is constructed through Yala block 5 region of the Yala frost. The above mention problems are due to the reason that this road was constructed through a frost where the animal density is high. Every year Lot of animals sacrifices their life to the vehicles that pass through this road. This type of unfortunate incidents would not occur if the authorities could foresee present problems. Even though the wildlife officers expel the elephants with crackers, later they come back to the road side again. The only solution to this problem is to stop the travelers giving food to elephants waiting by the road side and they will gradually get used to find food from the jungle.
