Man, these guy's were great. I used to see them them at the Club Shangri- La in Garden City Mi and the Pumpkin in Westland Mi. At that time, the group was comprised of Rusty Day, drums and lead vocals, Larry Walton Bass, Ron Trusky Sax, Todd Lovas guitar, and Kenny Fenkell organ. This was around 1966- 67.
cudaus1 I love this song! He later redid the song in a band called Detroit (aka the Band Detroit), which was originally formed by Mitch Ryder as an offshoot of The Detroit Wheels. Rusty joined as frontman after Mitch Ryder left in 1972, which coincidentally was shortly after Rusty had left Cactus. Not long after Rusty joined the Band Detroit, a certain midwestern guitarist named Steve Gaines (who later became famous with his band Crawdad, and eventually even more so as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd) joined the Band Detroit. He and Rusty really hit it off well, and a recording of them surfaced online in 1998 in which they played an entirely reworked version of I Gotta Move, with help from guitarist Bill Hodgson (Shadowfax), keyboardist Terry Emery (Crawdad and .38 Special), bass player Nathaniel Peterson (Brataxis), and drummer Ted “T-Mel” Smith (The Spinners). The recording is known as the Driftwood Tape, and it’s through that recording, which was on a Skynyrd bootleg album I downloaded off of internet back in 2010 or so, that I heard the name Rusty Day for the very first time. I haven’t looked back since!!!
Thanks for this! Always great to hear Rusty sing material unknown to me.
