I did tons of research a year ago on the most essential knots to learn. I ended up learning: sheet bend, full turn and two half hitches, bowline, tout line, clove hitch, square, figure 8, trucker's hitch. These jam knots were never mentioned. They are huge! to know. I am very blessed to find your videos.
Dave, compliments on two fronts. First, you are an excellent teacher. No small feat in itself. Clear, simple, well-illustrated. Second, you're very generous, as all good teachers are. You seem to delight in sharing your knowledge. A killer combination. You would have made a great instructor in military training (speaking as one who had the best at Ft. Benning). Great knots my friend, but instead of an over hand knot in end of rope, I use a figure 8 knot so i can get knot loose afterwards. Just in case i need a clean rope for next use.
I use these knots all the time after having seen this video. Primarily the one to replace the bowline knot, since I forget constantly how to do it. Plus the Canadian Jam knot is one of my favorites. Great video Dave, and thank you for taking the time to teach all of us! Much Respect.

2:19 This knot is really good for clothing, ponchos , ridge lines and group stuff like wood, poles and pegs together .This is a knot I like to show people how to make. Its just so useful and ez to undo.

Awesome I'm just used to a clove hitch half hitch and a bollen but these are great. Thanks Dave another good vid!
that last knot is interesting, never seen anyone do it that way for longlines or trotlines, I've seen a clove hitch with the stopper knot on the tag to stop it from pulling through, always worked and made repairing the longline very simple.

That second one is pretty sweet! Like a marlinspike hitch turned bowline, but interrupted with a stopper knot. Cool!

For all its uses, a canadian jam knot works great to hold a trash bag around the rim of a trash bin so it doesn't fall in. It's especially useful for 55 gallon bins.

The way I learned was to tie the second overhand over the Bight after you set the "stopper" knot you should show the way you can ratchet that down with a second in line loop for minimal use of Cordage for permanent structures, and explain the down side where you will have to cut the cord because it welds itself and the History which is also is Credit to the people that brought this Jam to the Outdoor world...

that answer is one of the greatest ive ever heard.
If you make the first knot on the Canadian jam a slip type knot it makes it easier to untie after punting a lot of tension on it.

Didn't know UA-cam only allows 1 comment. But Great knots Dave but a way to make all three better would be on the tag instead of an over hand knot use The Oysterman's Stopper knot because its a little bigger and not going to slip but my dad says he likes the overhand cause its Easier to tie

Great work on your videos and thanks for sharing your skills, but like millions of people Want know, when will you be having a show on a major network?
I like to use the Canadian jam knot as the first knot when trussing meat. It works great. Every loop around the meat from that point on is made is made by twisting a bight and slipping that bight over the already trussed end. That bight self-locks and sets up the next loop. You can truss a whole roast in about a minute using this technique.

Love your vids as always Dave, but this helps with stuff I have to learn for Scouts.
I think it should be said, that the first two knots are exactly the same, just the initial overhand knot is on different ends. Both of them can be untied by pulling the ends. This is a knot I use for almost everything, i can even do it with one hand in cca half a second (without the overhand) if the rope is not too short...
