About to run this encounter in the Planescape Module, thanks for the statblock, it's crazy that the Whirlwyrms dont have official statblocks
Sweet! Let us know how it works for you!
I could see it rising out of the Frogmire...
Speaking of, that’s another review I owe you all! 😬
Gotta agree with you. I am buying everything else in the Planescape set, but this thing leaves me cold. I mean it is essentially a Sea Serpent, and I already have the Fizban's mini for that. There is no lore or anything, it is not an older 2E creature... Honestly, the new Vecna adventure has a lot of the same problems - the lore for returning classics like the Spyder-Fiends or the Spiderdragon is pretty good, but they threw in some pretty cool looking new Demons that have literally zero lore. Even the Bone Roc that is getting a new Huge mini is without much of a background, worse yet, it is basically a glorified mount that you never even need to fight in the adventure itself.
I am still often getting 5E creatures as minis if they look cool enough, and can be repurposed... but truth be told, this creature does not look that interesting, the orange was a poor choice for an ambush predator. And we just got a better looking Giant (Moray) Eel mini.
Gonna use this and the Basalisk from CR for the baby ones and Ukatoa for the big one :)
That works! (Grab those stat blocks though if you'd like!)
Neat looking mini but kinda niche.
A good sea serpent is pretty versatile, no? Doesn't have to just be a planescape monster.
I'll never understand why wizkids insist on making such niche miniatures that often don't have stat blocks and would rarely see use. Particularly when there are so many player races that have a severe lack of minis (monsters too, but I notice it more when i'm trying to aquire player character minis for my players and realise i'll have to buy them on etsy again and paint them myself).
I think it often involves which creatures have pre-existing art assets and fit into the size categories they're looking to produce. And which ones best lend themselves to mini form without the need for complex tooling.
