The thing I don’t understand is why anyone would want to purposely solve the Lament configuration and summon the Cenobites in the first place? What exactly is the payoff for doing something that will result in a horrifically painful death and spending an eternity being tortured in hell?
"Demons to some, angels to others." - Pinhead Personally, I think of it as a form of existential seduction that probably compels the unconscious self to pursue solving the box depending on your deep hedonistic vices so to speak. We are motivated a lot of times by our unconscious priming and we consciously sort of rationalize our actions after the fact. Remember that the central god like figure over that domain is the Leviathan which is the god of flesh, hunger, and desire as mentioned in the video so these aspects of humanity are in some way metaphysically accessible to said entity. So people who are susceptible are coerced or manipulated into uncovering the potential nature of the box. So even a good person who is susceptible by an unconscious vice--one that they may repress or even honestly unaware of--could be captivated by the box. As you probably noticed some people who open the box almost seem to be in a hypnotic state; similar to losing yourself in an experience, sensation, activity or mode of being. I also don't think that the characters necessarily have access to the same knowledge that we as an audience do. Whatever limited knowledge they do have probably isn't the full scope of clarity we have. So this idea that if you solve this puzzlebox and you are deemed worthy, you will have access to a plane of existence and become an "Explorers in the further regions of experience" as quoted by Pinhead is something that some probably view as a form of transcendence. Remember, some of the cenobites were humans at one point and while for most people they are probably seen as grotesque (demons to some) they represent something that extends beyond normal human grasps of beauty/pleasure (angles to others). There are likely even more mundane and just plain human reasons to pursue the box. Life circumstances have made the person miserable, unfulfilled or feeling trapped and just as drugs sometimes become an escape for some people, this is probably the spiritual equivalent for them. Honestly, I'm probably imposing a lot of my personal creative horror ideas into it so I could be completely off in terms of the actual cannon, but that's how I make sense of it when I try to think how I would rationalize entities like this and their relation to humans. Maybe I'll make a video of my thoughts on this sometime.
Because no one knew whats gonna happen. The rumors about the configuration always told that it brings pleasure. But the thing is that cenobites find pleasure in pain ... the "highest level of pleasure" as they say. thats why all those people have fallen in to that trap. Even pinhead himself.

The cenobites represent a deep, primordial kind of terror. Back when I was just 6 or 7 years old I had a nightmare and went into my living room to see my dad, his way of consolation was to watch Hellraiser: Inferno with me.
The worse nightmare I had as a kid was 2 nightmares in one like the nightmare that man had in the movie (American werewolf in London) look it up it's not pleasant thinking you are awake from a nightmare when you're unknowingly are still in it 😥
I think your dad was trying to give his best solution at showing you what real fear/nightmares look and feel like. Probably didn't make much sense as a child. But what was in the movie was probably worse than anything a 6 or 7 year old could dream up.Your normal nightmares probably didn't seem scary at all after watching that movie. But it's a tough chance to take. Either it became easier for you to watch horror movies or left you traumatized for the rest of your life. Similar experience for me watching the first few Nightmare on elm St. Movies as a child.
"Demons to some, angels to others" refers to the perspective of the opener of the box. To those looking for the ultimate in sadomasochism: they're angels, to those not desiring that level of perversion: they're demons.
I worked on Hellraiser IV as the stand in for Bruce Ramsay. That shoot was hell itself. I got into a debate with the screenwriter who had written the previous hellraiser with the cenobites that were ridiculous like compact disk face guy. I brought up the same point you did to him about how the original concept of the cenobites was erotic in nature and that the camera/borg cenobite had abandoned that concept and made it just another monster and cheesy one at that. He didn’t like the criticism and left shortly after.
I loved djcd. Although it's been a long time since Iv seen hellraiser 3. I'll never forget getting the box set for Xmas when I was about 12-13. In the lament configuration box!
My first intro to these movies was the newest one. It was a different type of horror. When they started talking about finding new thresholds and how the body has so many more sensations to be felt, it was chilling to think of that concept.
The first ones, where people sought out the pain and horror, were great. After that it devolved into just horror. But in the beginning where people sought out the pain to gain the power and knew what they were getting into was metaphysical and entertaining.
Agreed! I always saw their sudden change to be Leviathans doing. I know they became more slasher because that was what was popular at the time. But in universe, after Leviathan cleaned house in 2 and witnessed how unhinged a totally evil Pinhead was in 3 without his humanity, Leviathan liked it and changed the rules for future Cenobites? They are still explorers of pleasure and pain, but they mostly prefer pain now. As for the box, I’m guessing the rules of the box changed with them. Now, anyone, regardless of desire gets a visit. But those who still desire it, still seek them out.
@@joshshoff5027 There was supposed to be a twist ending in Freddy Vs Jason where Pinhead showed up and asked 'Gentlemen, what seems to be the problem?'
The Hellraiser series (well, at least the first couple) is an example of cosmic / eldritch horror done right. But yea, after that, it turned into a cut and paste gorefest
If they made another hellraiser for the modern age the main characters phone would be dead so they had no choice but to try to solve this puzzle while pooping
That would make for a funny skit where the cinema bites come in and at first the person is horrified but then they are horrified by the smell of the shit

Wow, I didn’t expect to find the model of the “Berserk” manga, consider to be the most well written and gruesome original manga of all time. So this is what gave birth to it. The God Hand in Berserk were basically model after the cenobites. The behelit use to summon the demon and God hand are Lament configuration. The first time we meet the Godhand in the manga, they are in the Labyrinth that look almost exactly like in the movie. So they is no denying it. This is very cool!
I’ve always been fascinated with Clive barkers comics and films. The movies score are amazing and the design is very artistic and flamboyant . I remember going over to a friends house when I was a kid and was in awe with his Clive barker comic collection.
I have always wanted to know more about the Cenobites. They are fascinating, beautiful, chilling characters, and I wish they had a movie solely about them and their history. Btw, I see you make really good, high-quality content. You have a new subscriber. Thanks for all you do for everyone.
Actor who played pin head said during an interview he was ignored by everyone at the first films Rap party, eventually he realized it was because no one had seen him without the mask and make up
Fascinating, the similarities between Hellraiser's Cenobites and the members of The Godhand from Kentaro Miura's manga "Berzerk'. Off hand, I don't know if either creator was influenced or even aware of each other, and if that were so, it just makes it eerie all the more that their imaginations converged upon common mythologies.
What a great and thoughtful presentation of the complex and ingenious mind of Clive Barker. He wasn't just going for gore. That's part of what made him so masterful in this movie concept.
Great vid. Went to a Clive book reading in Seattle (back in 1998) and went to a cafe at Pike Place before to get a beer. Who sat at the table next to me smoking a cigar? Clive! Nice man.....
Your videos, perspective and presentation of the cinema subjects is always a delight to listen to. You cover it in such a pre-SCP way that it stands out. With that said... and you did ask.. would you mind tackling the creatures from Fraggle Rock? In particular the ogres, and the whole fantastic landscape on the other side of a cave system that connected to an old man's workshop.
got to meet they guy who played chatterer and he was such a nice guy, went on about how in the first movie he could only see his feet out of one eye and was walking into the walls and stuff.

The cenobites represent a deep, primordial kind of terror. Back when I was just 6 or 7 years old I had a nightmare and went into my living room to see my dad, his way of consolation was to watch Hellraiser: Inferno with me.
The worse nightmare I had as a kid was 2 nightmares in one like the nightmare that man had in the movie (American werewolf in London) look it up it's not pleasant thinking you are awake from a nightmare when you're unknowingly are still in it 😥
What was your dads fucking problem?
I think your dad was trying to give his best solution at showing you what real fear/nightmares look and feel like. Probably didn't make much sense as a child. But what was in the movie was probably worse than anything a 6 or 7 year old could dream up.Your normal nightmares probably didn't seem scary at all after watching that movie. But it's a tough chance to take. Either it became easier for you to watch horror movies or left you traumatized for the rest of your life.
Similar experience for me watching the first few Nightmare on elm St. Movies as a child.
@collinz..💀..Well done..

Freddy Krueger: I'm your worst nightmare
Pinhead: hahahahahaha nightmares, darkness and pain these things I'm made of

The Hellraiser series (well, at least the first couple) is an example of cosmic / eldritch horror done right. But yea, after that, it turned into a cut and paste gorefest
If they made another hellraiser for the modern age the main characters phone would be dead so they had no choice but to try to solve this puzzle while pooping
I read this while pooping I feel attacked.
That would make for a funny skit where the cinema bites come in and at first the person is horrified but then they are horrified by the smell of the shit

Question: Did Clive Barker ever get the counseling that he *clearly* needs?
For real. I just get extremely uncomfortable watching these films.

Hellraiser 2 is always going to be one of my faves

pinhead was never right when they changed the actor, odd classic the first one
“Masters of Pain” does sound like some BDSM nickname but truly I must be a sadomasochist myself... since I made myself watch Hellraiser movies when I was way too young.

Great video.

Good for you 🙄
I was 10 the first time I saw hellraiser, my cousin was babysitting me and made me turn away from the sex scenes .... because they were the questionable parts of the movie lol

When I was a child I really liked solving puzzle boxes, still do. So the Lement Configuration really spoke to me...Clive Barker, pure genious.

Could you review the creature from shrek, the Ogre? Thanks

A lot of fans believe hellraiser influenced muira.
The 2022 movie was a neat look into the universe too!
I absolutely love pinheads lines, so good.

YOU OPENED THE BOX.... AND HE CAME.
I got good news my friend
What a great and thoughtful presentation of the complex and ingenious mind of Clive Barker. He wasn't just going for gore. That's part of what made him so masterful in this movie concept.
"Do i look like someone who cares what god thinks?"
I thought fraggle rock was a fever dream i had when i was a kid.
I could have Jason Vorhees chasing me, and I still wouldn't be as scared of him as I am of Pinhead
Seeing as cenobites are in a part of gell abd jason has been to hell AND ESCAPED id just stay away from both
I've surprisingly NEVER seen any Hellraiser movies! I love horror too. This explanation makes me really wanna watch! How complex and epic.

I always loved the special effects right from the first film , stunning for its time I thought .
Clive Barker made a game too it's called Jericho it's actually very good, it's one of my favorites

In the 2012 movie Cabin In The Woods, Fornicus (Hell Lord of Pain and Bondage) is a homage to Hellraiser’s Pinhead.
Brilliant fucking movie as well. And to my
Surprise just now, interesting ideological parallels in both. Cool
Oh and a similar character like pinhead and fornicus is also portrayed in “Thirteen Ghosts” of the 90s. Underrated horror depicting a horror hierarchical metaverse akin to the rigidity of Islam present only still today in Koranic subrogation which mainly prohibited any and all personal contextual interpretation of Mohammad’s book the Quran, and after the Hadith when peaceful most of the time Moham turns into a pedophile warlord who marries his brothers wife (she’s 12 or 13 against her will obviously ) is the most perfect being to ever exist EVER.. only because everyone who said he didn’t, well they are dead dead so yeah if something contradicts between the 2 books of Islam you default the resolution in the blood soaked Hadith being supreme arbiter to prophet shitheads sadist shitty attempt on meta narrative.
Moral of the story: Don't touch anything and don't mess with the stuff you don't know anything about. :D
Doom: RIP AND TEAR UNTIL ITS DONE!
Pinhead: Hold my box.
I wonder what Doom Slayer will do if he gets to fight these Cenobites in hell.
