He was my neighbor. He was one of my neighbors. Even though I am black and of a different faith, they were very kind to my family. His wonderful wife told me the history of how that song got written. He wrote the song.
Bro. Rutledge, Josh Johnson here. Thank you so much for posting this. Papa's songs are so timeless. He and Nanny sure loved you guys. God bless you from Colorado Springs, CO!!!
What I Love Abril is that so many people have the testimony and we can sing it in different ways so that many ears may hear and be saved. I hope you have had a change of heart over the years.
I was at Church in the South and Brother Don Johndon came ever so often, sang and preached. He was so in love with Jesus and it came thru in his preaching and singing. He was a good man, an excellent preacher and a man after God's own heart. He could preach the paint off the walls, it was said and his singing made you repent, pray, sing, cry out to God. His love for God pulled you closer to God. Never knew a service where GOD didn't just take over, we loved when Bro Johnson came to town. Still have some of his music which I still get blessed by. I know he's dancing and singing around Gods throne. Praise Jesus for him.
I have known Bro. Johnson since I was a kid going to Campmeeting in Olla, Louisiana back in the 60s and 70s. Such a pure voice and such anointing. What a preacher, also. My Dad lives in the Memhis area and gets to visit with Bro. Johnson on occasion. He admires Bro. Johnson and it is such a pleasure to him when he does. Thank you for all the wonderful memories, Bro. Johnson and God bless you.
I never met this wonderful man of God. In researching his song, "I Can't Complain", I found a jewel of a soul. I'm so happy that technology enabled me to hear and see, and feel this testimony. Thank You Lord!
Most every year, Elder Don Johnson would come to our home church in Indianapolis IN (Christian Tabernacle ~ Pastor Paul Jordan) and sing and preach for us. Such a tremendous blessing. A brother in our church, Brother Mitchell who became a shut-in and was unable to attend church was being visited by the women's Wed. prayer group. They ask Brother Mitchell to sing for them, and he said he wanted to sing a song the Lord blessed him with...it was, now notice his title..."God is so Good to Me, I WILL NOT Complain". I mentioned to the church I pastor that there was a stronger commitment to the way Brother Mitchell sang the song as to say I "can't" complain still leaves room for error...But to actually commit yourself to say I "WILL NOT" Complain strengthens the statement to Brother Mitchell's version of the song. In all the years we knew Brother Mitchell, who was in very much pain for quite a number of years, none in our church ever heard him Complain of his sickness or pain. The song by Elder Don Johnson lives on in the heart of a multitude of people and is still a favorite congregational song here. God Bless his memory.
Sweet memories.... I attended his church in Memphis in the early 70's. He was a great man of God. This song has always blessed me especially when he sings it. I used to sing it quite often myself.
I heard Bishop Johnson sing this song right after he wrote it. We were attending an AMF conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, at Bishop Paul Jordan's church (Christian Tabernacle). This has been one of my all-time favorite songs ever since. Thanks for posting this!
I've been blessed by his Godly music a long time even though I've never met him in person. I used to play the organ for a young teenager who only sang Pastor Johnson's songs. What a pleasure, easy, but so full of meaning and God always blessed. Annointed singing, preaching and song writing. Thank you!
Brother Don was a good and godly man. I too have always loved this song. I can see him singing this song in his service. Love him and his family so much. He was my mom's pastor and his son Brother David. The Johnson's can sing. Well him and Brother Charles.
LO CONOCI CUANDO VINO A LA ARGENTINA,FUE DE GRAN BENDICION PARA MI VIDA¡¡¡¡HOY SE FUE A MORAR CON JESUS,YO SEGUIRE CANTANDO DIOS ES MUY BUENO PARA MI¡¡¡¡¡¡
But Don Johnson family tragedy needs to be told how this song was birthed from his wife’s family members a Father Mother & all their kids burned alive from a house fire. That’s where the words came from on the way home after the funeral he talked to God it really got to him and he told God I can’t complain because you’ve been so good to me. You don’t commit fraud and steal another Christian Authors Lyrics & Music and then lie about a Black Bishop Amber claiming he wrote it and changed can’t to won’t. You don’t ROB FROM GODS WORK. SHAME ONNTHE BLACK GOSPEL ARTIST WHO GAVE ZERO CREDIT TO THE TRUE AUTHOR AND THEY ARE MAKING MILLION$ while Don Johnson got ZERO ROYALTIES, when u hear the story of this family tragedy it puts a whole different perspective on who wrote it penned the lyrics and wrote the music and have the entire black church community telling lies because of Bishop Abner THEFT & FRAUD COPYRIGHT CLAIMS. ITS SAD AND THEY WILL ALL HAVE TO GIVE AN ACCOUNT IF THEY RECORDED IT FOR PROFIT GREED AND KNEW IT WAS NOT WRITTEN BY BISHOP ABNER. IF THE WHITE CHURCH EVER DID THIS TO A BLACK GODPEL ARTIST THEY WOULD BURN OUR CHURCHES DOWN AND WOULD TAKE THE FRAUDSTER TO COURT AND SUE FOR EVERY PENNY. BLACK PEOPLE IN THE CHURCH DO SHADY STUFF COMMITTING FRAUD AND HOPES THE TRUTH NEVER SEES THE LIGHT OF DAY. BECAUSE YOU GUYS SEE NOW THAT A WHITE COUNTRY MEMPHIS TN HILLBILLY PASTOR DON JOHNSON WROTE THE SONG ITS NOT A BIG DEAL. REVERSE IT AND THEY WOULD COME AFTER THE WHITE CHRISTIAN
I can remember listening to this song at my grandmother's house when I was a kid, on her 8-track tape player. That's when I fell in love with this song.
I thought the same thing to. Goes to show we need to open to listen to the lyrics. The original version has a country feel to it. The message is the same.
what a testimony- Praise the Lord. I am glad to hear the original version of this song and the author as others have changed it to "I won't complain" but however you say it the fact remains that it is God that is the central theme for this song and any thing that we go through. God sees us through a multitude of circumstances.
+Joseph Clay I think if you write to the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ, they will either send it or direct you. Bro Johnson was the Superintendent at one time, I think he may have passed on. Here is the Address: ALJC - 875 N White Station Road, PO BOX 22366 - Memphis, Tennessee 38122-0366
morenaso1 I do, too, but I respect them both and their own styles. Got to give this guy special credit, though, because he is the one who wrote the song. :)
And you need to understand how this song was birthed from a fire in a house that killed his wife’s family a mother father & all their children burned alive in their home. How anyone could argue about this or commits fraud against the true Author who penned this song lyrics after leaving the funerals that day talking to god on the drive him pulled over and got out of his car and the words just flowed from God. The Holy Ghost gave him that song. I think it was unfair that he gets no recognition at awards shows or labels do not mention the real author. Bishop Abner hijacked the song changing can’t to won’t. If Don Johnson had done this to the black church they would have burned his church down.
He was my neighbor. He was one of my neighbors. Even though I am black and of a different faith, they were very kind to my family. His wonderful wife told me the history of how that song got written. He wrote the song.

Black folks have made this song so popular had no clue THIS man wrote it! what a blessing!

My pastor in Baton Rouge was Bro. Robert Martin. He introduced me to Bro. Johnson. What a precious man he was. I love this song.

So good to hear how this song was born. Thank you, Brother Don Johnson, for telling us and singing it for us. Yes, God is so good!
