Ive been watching a few of your videos here and there in the past week. Im happy to find a youtuber so avid and enthusiastic about geography and culture. I was once a small kid who stuck his nose in atlases and maps and all other geographic info just like how you mentioned in another one of your videos. Ive been so focused on studying random, obscure places in the world, so its nice to see your channel primarily focusing on the geography of my home country, USA, because it's such a vast expanse of culture and physical geography that contains almost all types of land biomes on earth. Much love from your newest fan!
Hawaii, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico are definitely my favorites That specific bat on the American Samoa one is the Samoan flying fox. Unlike most bats, they're diurnal. And they're associated with many Samoan legends and myths. Agreed about the NY one, I think my state could've picked something better to represent the state. Something that isn't the Statue of Liberty either (since that's used so often), like Sagamore Hill (Teddy's home from 1885 to 1919), Castle Clinton, Federal Hall (where George Washington was inaugurated) or the Fire Island National Seashore.
I thought this was going to be a Rant the whole way through, yet you make some great observations! Got me rethinking this whole collection! I also agree there are some beautiful quarters here! Ty
Sometimes I like watching your videos just to listen to your voice. It's unassuming and varies in intonation but not so much to be jolting to the senses. It's rather relaxing to listen to.
Something to note about the Washington quarter. The animal depicted is a Roosevelt Elk, named after Theodore Roosevelt who was key to conservation/parks. They range all over the state but are especially known and used for Olympic National Parks, second to the rain forests.
Hmm and after digging into Wikipedia i learned something new. Apparently after visiting the region FDR, seeing the Elk that were named after his relative, he shortly afterward created the Olympic National Park...
Minor correction, but there isn't actually a "White Mountain" in New Hampshire, just the White Mountain National Forest. The inclement-weather mountain you referred to would be Mount Washington, tallest peak in the northeast
I, from Ohio and quite the fan of Michigan nature, love the Pictured Rocks quarter. I remember seeing that actual specific tree that has the root stretched ( not really, the rocks below it gave way) over to the other piece of land.
I enjoyed this because I also enjoyed collecting the quarters. I went to the ceremony in Indiana at George Rogers Clark memorial. It was very interesting. The quarters make a person want to visit that place. I enjoyed Perry’s Victory in Ohio and I highly recommend it. It was interesting what you thought about the quarters
By the time you got to RI in the whole bird series I was getting worried we'd see a seagull for Utah... So Delicate Arch was a bit of a relief, but I agree, same old shot of the arch, a bit disappointing. Overall a long list of places I need to learn more about :) This was fun.
Your comment about Mississippi bitterness got a guffaw out of me. That's rare. I wonder if it would be interesting to others if you did a video about nice towns or cities throughout the US in less popular (and populous) areas. Like the farm belt, prairies, bayous, woods, deserts. Not every place is scenic or in a high tech region but they are still nice places to live for various reasons. Doesn't have to be a countdown but just a survey. The flip side of the coin: places like Slab City or maybe some of those ghost towns or other quirky places.
Kyle, I am also a coin collector so I really liked this video for the geography and the coins. Yeah they didn't pick the best subject to put on some of the coins. Maybe they should have asked people what they wanted. Or get some historians to help them. I live near Cuyahoga Valley and the bike trail down there is great. It goes along the Erie canal. They have been adding onto it for years and I think there is a complete trail from Lake Erie to Akron, or even farther. They are extending other bike trails in Ohio also. Could you do a video on bike trails in the eastern US?
I don't think I'd be a good person for that topic as I'm not a cyclist but I do have videos about outdoor activities, including cycling, and what are considered the best areas or states for those activities
I was pleasantly surprised where you ranked the Iowa quarter. it isn’t the coolest looking image, and you’re right, it’s kind of weird looking, but I’m glad they chose Effigy Mounds to highlight some indigenous history (not that there were too many options to choose from anyways).
I' am surprised that the WA state park didn't really look like the rain forest that it is. Is it that hard to draw a fern? Hey, you have a poster of the album Maggot Brain by Funkadelic! Eddie Hazel rocks!!
I agree on Colorado’s. Great sand dunes national park is less known and a bit off the beaten path, but it’s really cool nonetheless. Biggest sand dunes in North America I believe, and there’s a cool river at the base that basically acts as a mini beach. Very unique
I understand your dislike for the Texas one but I love how distinctive and easily it is to spot in my change. Also the design is based on an old Spanish coin that would've been used during the time of the missions.
We didn’t lose the war of 1812. Most historians agree that the war was inconclusive and no side gained much. Not vouching for Ohio, it’s still a crappy quarter (lol). Great vid!
Being a native Californian, I agree , California should've looked out of the box with what was depicted on our state's quarter. Some other options could've been, the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park, Golden Gate National Recreational area, Channel Islands Nat'L Sanctuary Channel Islands Nat'L Park Lassen Volcanic Nat'L Park with Mount Shasta, just to name a few
KYLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 YOU HAVE A MAGGOT BRAIN VINYL COVER ON THE WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. OK We need to hang out. I've got the first album, Maggot Brain, and One Nation Under a Groove. I especially love the songs Maggot Brain and Doo Doo Chasers. I change the record on the wall for each video. I've got a pretty large vinyl collection so I definitely won't run out any time soon!
@@GeographyKing You should check out Music For Your Mother, Funkadelic 45s. Its really bluesey funk. I was Listening to their first album on the way to and from work and was at a red light and grooving out so hard I cursed the green light. I've seen George Clinton live many times. They call me the Big Pill. Starchild. Doing it to you in your ear-hole! Ya dig?
Michigan in the top 10! Edit: I have been collecting national park quarters for a while and am only missing 8. I do not Glacier and Acadia (which are my favorites) and I also do not have Hawaii Volcanoes your no #1. Probably my favorite one of your videos.
Love to see u getting more and more attention king. I've been planning my next road trip (3rd trip now) and I'm so excited to get out there. Great videos as always..
Love Carolina Mountains so much more than the coastal region in NC. Although I imagine boating and fishing is probably a lot of fun its just too far out of the way to get to the coast and the land near the coast is rather boring and often swampy.
Coloradan here. It's a good pick (we have lots to choose from) i take exception to the fact that the father and son depicted are natives. They are very cleary not from a 1000 years ago, unless they had plastic sand buckets and modern haircuts.
Good list. Glad to see my current residence, Minnesota, so high. As a Geology of the National Parks instructor, I love your top two choices, but still feel Colorado should have done Mesa Verde. Colorado or Utah could have done Dinosaur, too, for something different.
Unless I'm mistaken the Vicksburg scene shows a Union iron clad. So while it does reference the Civil War it's showing the Siege of Vicksburg from the Union POV. West Virginia's is fairly radical. "John Brown's Fort" is actually the Federal Armory in Harper's Ferry. John Brown was caught and hanged for having done this. Good call on Indiana versus NY's Revolutionary War image. It depicts soldiers, not officers. There is a story behind each of these images, politicians, committees, back rooms, back stabbing, pettiness. I've been all over the world, seen a lot of natural features. Bryce Canyon alone has more 'amazing natural features,' than the rest of the entire planet combined - excepting maybe the rest of Utah. One thing about El Capitan depicted in California's quarter. It stands out from the air better than anything else in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, including Mt Whitney. I worked with sculptor Robert Graham on the Charlie Parker Memorial in Kansas City. The sculpture was I guess kept secret until the unveiling. I was standing shooting video near a couple members of the selection committee. The sheet is pulled off, the crowd cheers and claps, and these selection committee people were shocked, "How did this happen?" "Who chose _this_?" "We have to get to the bottom of this!" The way I figure is that no one else had any expectations so whatever it turned out to be, they were happy. The sculpture is Parker's head with his lips blowing on a saxophone that isn't there (his profile is a bit jagged until you figure out it's the shape of Africa - where of course all American popular music and jazz originates) It's very soulful. When I told Bob he was concerned, I said, - "nah, they had expectations, probably expected to see Charlie on a horse raising his sax in the air. I'm sure they'll get over it." I'm sure the same thing happened at least 54 times with these quarters. In fact this sort of thing happened on everyone of the public monuments Bob Graham made. One of them was Quetzalcoatl the plumed serpent for San Jose, the city Bob is from. I said, 'Well at least that wasn't controversial..." He started laughing, then showed me a photo. "You look kind of pudgy there Bob." He was still laughing. "Those two guys on either side of me?" Police detectives acting as body guards. I look fat because I'm wearing body armor." Apparently the non-Christian theme of an Aztec God - and favorite subject of tourist figurines in Mexico - riled up some very threatening people. Most of these quarters are cluttered. A quarter is such a small object, cramming a lot of detail into them isn't good design. When you consider the great coin examples we have in our history. The buffalo nickel, Lincoln on the penny, Washington on the quarter (almost every other president except Jefferson, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt (include the glasses) would just be an anonymous guy. And I guess that's Daniel Boone on the Kentucky quarter. The thing about Boone (direct ancestor of my Aunt Mary in South Carolina) is he moved to Missouri and vowed never to go anywhere near Kentucky ever again - all the land settled and claimed by Boone and the first white pioneers to settle Kentucky was later stolen by land speculators and their lawyers. If you want to know how the Native Americans felt, you can also ask a founder of Kentucky.
The Geography King should know a little more Ellis Island. As you point out almost no one would think of New Jersey. The island did belong to New York. Over time, however when landfill was added to enlarge the island (to build a hospital & dorms etc.). The Supreme Court ruled that the landfill portion belongs to New Jersey while the original portion (with the main building )belongs to New York.
What’s interesting is that Puerto Rico’s quarter of El Yunque is that it’s not a National Park, it’s a National Forest of the Department of Agriculture. The only National park of the NPS is San Juan NHS but since PR’s territory quarter already shows a lookout or Sentry Box that is found in said Historic Site, why bother repeating the same image on two different coins.
Correction at 10:19: the New Hampshire White Mountain description in your video is wrong. There is no mountain called White Mountain. The White Mountains collectively refer to the different ranges within New Hampshire, all of which are below 7000 ft in elevation. The "White" Mountain that you seem to be referring to is Mount Washington, which does indeed have some of the worst weather in the continental US.
Talking about the West Virginia quarter for a second, the state quarter that was released prior to this series had already depicted the New River Gorge Bridge so depicting the same thing on a different quarter was kinda out of the question anyway.
Wow. As a Texan I am very disappointed in my state's. Just as I was in the Texas State quarter. Just an outline of the state with a star in it. Great video.
‘White Mountain’ for New Hampshire is White Mountain National Forest. The place with the worst weather is Mount Washington (one of of the White Mountains)
I only take issue with your ranking of Florida. The birds depicted are the Spoonbill - which is only found in FL and parts of South America & the Caribbean. And the Anhinga - a bird that is locally revered as a symbol of the Everglades in South Florida. My old elementary school in Miami were the Anhingas! Haha. To me it captures the essence of Everglades National Park. Although an interesting one would be Sweetwater Prarie Wetlands and their wild horses!
My dad and I started collecting them from the beginning. Have the Denver and Philadelphia mint version for each state. It was a fun hobby back in the day. Good luck finding yours.
The Missions quarter was designed like an old Spanish Real. It does something the other quarters in the series don’t. To me it’s the best of the AtB series.
Louisiana gets scorn for a Civil War reference, but Indian is praised for the Revolutionary War reference. They were both pivotal and important wars in our history.
Cormorants and Rosetta Spoonbills are common to the the everglades and Florida in general. Flamingos are Not. Suggesting putting Flamingos on the quarter (as a Floridian) is sorta a stereotyped Insult...since we have very very few flamingos in the state (other than lawn ornaments and lotto tickets).....I believe the Florida Quarter is great, the Sable Palm Hammocks in the background and the wire-grass in the fore ground makes the Florida Quarter 100% Spot on to Represent our Largest National Park, with absolutely unique flora and fauna that DO NOT appear on any other quarter. (GA and DE quarters have herons and no palm trees). Looks like home to me.
Me, a Wisconsinite: "State pride is such an irrational relic of a bygone era." Also me, when Kyle likes my state's quarter: "TOP 3 BABY! SUCK IT ILLINOIS!!!"
It's funny you depicted the Canadian Loonie. As a Canadian, I remember all the ridicule it got when it first came out, although personally, I was ambivalent. Other than commemorative Loonies, I'm surprised this design has held on so long. I should add that I really enjoyed this video, and had Wikipedia open to read up on some of these amazing places.
@@GeographyKing I think that was one of the competing designs. It's been over 30 years, so I don't recall the reasons why they chose the Loon. What is funny is that the term "Loonie" was used by Canadians as a pejorative, but that connotation is long gone. I think most people view it with some pride now, as it is unique.
Really enjoyed this vid. I'm also happy to see that your favorite is Hawaii Volcanos National Park. As you know, Kilauea is currently erupting again, after a two year three month hiatus. I wish the Hawaii quarter would have shown our nene geese along with Kilauea - nene are frequently found in the park. And they are only found here in the state of Hawaii!
Ellis island is an interesting border because some of the island is enclaved by new york. The reason for this is because New York expanded the island into New Jersey water.
Honestly the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge would’ve been the best choice for Oklahoma. They could’ve shown the mountains with the Elk and Bison.
OMG I feel stupid, I thought you meant Hotels or camping "quarters" at the National Parks, I took my headphones and stopped listening because I don't really care about coins... but I made sure to let it play through even ads if there were any and hit thumbs up to support the channel because I love your videos 99% of the time. keep making videos despite my whining because its a fav channel of mine.

I've been to American Memorial Park on Saipan. It's beautiful and a chance to see some unique nature. Walked through a wooded area with toads hopping about. Got to a creek that was full of mudskippers and crabs. Went to the beach and saw a tank sticking out of the water.

Great video.
another great video! :)
Thank you!
The Vermont Quarter reminds me of the german "50 Pfennig", it has a woman planting a little tree on it too
‘White Mountain’ for New Hampshire is White Mountain National Forest. The place with the worst weather is Mount Washington (one of of the White Mountains)
The national park quarter I seem to find the most often is Kisatchie, Louisiana’s quarter.
Acadia National Park in Maine is my favorite place.
Disagree on Oregon’s quarter, using Mt Hood when they could have used an actual National Park - Crater Lake
Sorry friend, the spoonbill is not only found in Florida. Spoonbills are found all along the Texas coast. Anhingas as well.
The peak on the New Hampshire quarter is Mount Chocorua and also the quarter should say White Mountains.
Ellis Island is actually split between NY and NJ. Google the very strange borders of the island, CPG Grey does an excellent video on the subject.
Kudos to Nevada for featuring Great Basin Nat'l Park, but their quarter looks like an illustration out of an HP Lovecraft story.
I wish they would have minted equal amounts (or close to that) of each quarter. It's near impossible to find quarters from 2010-2013
My dad and I started collecting them from the beginning. Have the Denver and Philadelphia mint version for each state. It was a fun hobby back in the day. Good luck finding yours.
Agreed! The only ones I’m missing are from 2010 - 2012
Pleas try and sync your audio. Love your videos
Delaware is ironic because it doesn’t have a National Park
One point of diss agreement for me is I think the Texas one is one of the best.
The Missions quarter was designed like an old Spanish Real. It does something the other quarters in the series don’t. To me it’s the best of the AtB series.
But Hawaii is pretty rad too.
Louisiana gets scorn for a Civil War reference, but Indian is praised for the Revolutionary War reference. They were both pivotal and important wars in our history.
Spot-on. I wish they listened to u when making these decisions.
Thanks. I have been saving the special quarters since 1999. It was a fun over view of the newest ones
We did not lose war of 1812. Our capital did get burned, but we won the war overall during New Orleans. We lost a few battles through.
Me, a Wisconsinite: "State pride is such an irrational relic of a bygone era."
Also me, when Kyle likes my state's quarter: "TOP 3 BABY! SUCK IT ILLINOIS!!!"
I’m not from Wisconsin, but I understand this feeling completely, especially the “suck it Illinois” (I’m from Iowa :P).
Geography guy: We lost the War of 1812

It's funny you depicted the Canadian Loonie. As a Canadian, I remember all the ridicule it got when it first came out, although personally, I was ambivalent. Other than commemorative Loonies, I'm surprised this design has held on so long. I should add that I really enjoyed this video, and had Wikipedia open to read up on some of these amazing places.
I read on a canoeing website that it was almost a canoe depicted on the dollar. Not sure if that's accurate though.
Georgia's quarter definitely should ave had Stone Mountain on it, and Ohio should have had Buzzard's Roost in Hinckley.
Thank you! I really appreciate the support
@@GeographyKing Just don't let my whining about coins being boring stop you from covering the other quarters or what ever, the comments show others found it interesting and I can always just wait for the next video... or go watch the many others you made before I found the channel recently.
I've been to American Memorial Park on Saipan. It's beautiful and a chance to see some unique nature. Walked through a wooded area with toads hopping about. Got to a creek that was full of mudskippers and crabs. Went to the beach and saw a tank sticking out of the water.
The sunflowers for Kansas is getting tired I’m glad they did tallgrass prairie
Exactly. I've lived in Kansas for 23 of my 25 years on this planet and I could not be more tired of sunflowers. All they are good for are their seeds.
So, there are 56 of these...? That's the main bit of info...I wanted
Love to the Denali quarter in Alaska.
Great information
If anybody wants to get into collecting quarters [True Collectible Quarters], then you should start with the 1999 ones!!, in mint condition!!!
never realized how much the Minnesota quarter looks like a loonie😂 thanks for pointing that out.
