    Great little video. My partner actually brought me this very model last week. I suffer from siezures and have been struggling with concentration so she brought it me to try and help me focus on something. I've not tried to do a model since I was a kid over 30 years ago but I thought I'd give it a go, I just wish I'd have seen this video first as i think I'd done it backwards and built the ship first before painting it. Thankfully it's actually turned out really well and since completing it I've built a further 2 models Ind I've actually finished painting them both this evening. After seeing this I'm going to use some of the tips when I start my next project. I have thought about adding fine black cotton as the ropes for the sails unless someone can give me some other ideas. Brilliant video thanks for the tips👍

      I've got some Uschi fine thread for rigging - it's like cotton but it's elastic so it looks finer and keeps a straight line - super glue can be used to glue it in too! Worth a google

    Excellent build Matt of the Mary Rose. This kit looks like a must have. I think you have got a knack for Tudor era warships.........looks like you now need Airfix's Golden Hind to go along with it!
    In regards to the myth that the Mary Rose sank of her maiden voyage. I think the fate of the Mary Rose became mixed up with the fate of the Swedish Warship Vasa. Famously the Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in Stockholm Harbor, 1628. I always love to see when someone takes the time to debunk historical myths. Well done for doing that as well Matt!

    Great build video! I have a large wooden kit of this interesting ship but holding off from building it right now! My issue is the perceived accuracy of the forecastle! Even the historical experts are unable to agree on the correct shape of the ship as the only pictures are at best suffering form artistic licence! It is frustrating that parts of the bow of the real ship are still on the sea floor covered up for the time being. Yes the rigging is thankfully quite easy for this ship and would look nice. Little display case mandatory!!! Your little kit turned out really well, good job! :-)

I think a few might be out of print at the moment but they had such offerings like, Columbus's ships, Hudsons Half Moon,Mayflower, and Barbary Pirate Ship at a price around $10

  • @Belzediel
    @Belzediel 3 роки тому +1

    The Tudor era navy were FASTIDIOUS about the appearance of their vessels, especially the flagship. Her sails would have been immaculate white, her paintwork and gilding gleaming. The notion that past eras were typically grubby is very much a media fabrication. Not all of the people washed themselves quite as much as we do these days, but keeping your stuff looking pristine was a significant priority.
    Most sailers on ships spent almost their entire work time cleaning. Aside from being, at this time, certainly considered a sign of purity, Kings liked to show off their best deathboats whenever they could, and this would mainly involve ambassadors, dignitaries, wealthy merchants etc none of whom would be all that impressed if what they saw was grubby. Ships would carry more than one set of sails for several reasons, (I dunno if 400:1 is good enough to show, but), the decks of the ships would have sheet lockers, so they were perfectly capable of bringing down one sheet, putting up a spare, and running the dirty one down to the lower decks where you'd dunk them in one of the ship's cauldrons to boil up with some pig (or sometimes whale) fat render and then bring them up to dry by stringing them from lines between the masts.
    If you'd like a quick indicator of how Medieval chaps kept their linens, look at EVERY contemperaneous portrait. They'll all have bright white starched fabrics. You might say 'yeah, but, for a portrait...' and there's soem truth to that but the flip side would be pointing out quite how much this sort of thing was the subject of gossip and disdain in diaries from the era, and not just the landeds either.
    Probably TL;DR, something of a personal area of interest.
    Of course, a period accurate model would also look like it'd been painted very simply, so, you can't really win on something that size.
