There was a period when the NBA declined in popularity because their image was that of gang culture, guns, drugs, and violence. That didn't rub the right way with the majority of audiences, thus, began the lifelong battle to separate themselves from those things. Adam Silver, David Stern, and those that came before them had been doing it ever since: banning gun, banning drugs on the arenas as well as training facilities, banning AI's drip because he really tried to dress like a gangster (which I'll admit that David Stern must have been too paranoid when he passed that rule), automatic suspensions for fighting, etc.
All of those things were done for one reason: to market the NBA as an environment of professional, role-model athletes; and specifically to the lower-income class (which accounts for a fair volume of consumers): this is a way for your children to get out of the bad influences they're born into, not a way for them to get into another bad influence. And the NBA isn't the only one doing this; every sport league in the world strives to attain those images, for they are much easier to stand behind than that of drugs, and gun, and prostitutes. A off-topic example could be the Hip-Hop genre. It took so unfairly long for Hip-hop to become mainstream partly because networks was very skeptical to advertise this kind of energy.
Ja Morant's stint directly went against that images; that was where he did wrong. The NBA will most likely make an example out of him to stop anybody from repeating his behavior. He compromised their images, so they will compromise his.

Ja got in trouble for the same thing he got in trouble for in the first scenario. He hadn't brought the gun on the team plane because if that had been the case the league would have suspended him for at least 50 games(what is said I'll leave below). Instead in the first issue he got punished by the Memphis Grizzlies organization (8 game suspension) for conduct detrimental to the organization the league decided not to step in. In this second case it's likely that the league will step in because this is a repeat incident. Just wanted to clarify because i think Domo misunderstood that bit. (Im watching the early part of the stream so i dont know if its adressed later on.)
