I first saw Richard's wife in a video where she was making porridge for him - saw it just a few weeks ago in fact, and sent it to my sister to see - I've always liked Richard, and I thought his wife was great -she seemed so natural, easy- going and relaxed! My sister agreed. A few days later I watched a video of Richard talking about her death, and I felt truly upset! Such a lovely couple!

This is a lovely interview - relaxed and refreshing. Having read 'A Pocketful of Happiness' twice and shall be reading it again, it is easy to highly recommend you doing so, if not already. It led me to watching Richard E Grant in his wonderful programme: 'Write On Around the World' (BBC/OU) and the film 'Can You Ever Forgive Me' - both of which are amazing. The love between Joan and Richard is a joy to behold - and I'll treasure this Book forever as a memoir of this beautiful couple.

It was recommended to me by a friend, after my husband died from cancer a fortnight ago. There's so much I recognise in it about the diagnosis and treatment; the helplessness you feel; the way it all puts your life on hold as you wait for what you know is inevitable, but while at the same time, clinging desperately to every 'more positive' blood test results that the doctors report to you. That in itself has been a great comfort in recent days.

So very sorry for your recent loss. I also had the same experience 2 years ago with the death of my husband. Richards book resonated me with me on so many levels, and was such a great comfort.

The combination of admiration and immense jealousy of his distilled brilliance that I feel is quite overwhelming.
His case for constitutional monarchy chimes with me too. When one casts even the most minute of glances at the various heads of state around the world, one comes to appreciate the virtue of such a benign figurehead as the UK and Commonwealth realms enjoy.
