For more than two decades, Sweden's Cult Of Luna have forged a sound that has grown incomparable to that of others. Ambitious, epic, visceral, and drenched in emotion, they frequently craft songs that clock in at over eight minutes but make every single moment count. With 2019's A Dawn To Fear, they delivered a career highpoint, and on 2021's The Raging River EP, they continued on the journey started with that record, one that concludes with The Long Road North, which stands as one of their most dynamic and beautiful works to-date. "I think one of the reasons why we have been able to be so productive the last couple of years is that we have been consistently writing from the heart. We have let our instincts guide us, and I think it's getting clearer where we are heading," says vocalist/guitarist Johannes Persson, who has been one of the primary driving forces behind the band since their inception. "Another key aspect of how we were able to speed up the process is that I have moved back to Umeå after fifteen years in Stockholm. It made it very easy to meet up and work together instead of writing everything in a few but very long sessions."

Cold Burn may just be one of the most awesome opening album tracks ever. The fact that a band can still write a song like that after a prolific 20-year career, tells you everything you need to know about Cult of Luna.
Cold burn sounds like the apocalypse. Like planets being torn apart. Absolutely brilliant.

This is right up there with Mariner as my favorite work from Cult of Luna so far. Excellent album, I can't wait to be able to stream it!

Another masterpiece from the masters themselves. Very few bands do this style as well and recognizably as Cult Of Luna do. Between this and the new Voivod, tomorrow is going to be a great day for album releases.
The whole album is killer, and Blood Upon Stone is so freaking epic. It’s a serious contender for my new fav song by them. I never thought anything would come close to Dark City Dead Man.

My thoughts exactly. I have had the whole album on repeat several days now, but whenever I get to Blood Upon Stone I just rewind it and rewind it. Must have heard it like 10 times in a row today

Dark City Dead Man, In Awe Of, The Fall, Blood Upon Stone, Following Betulas, Cygnus, Wave After Wave... These guys knows how to end an album, so fucking epic everytime ! I can't pick wich one is ma favourtie, they are all greats in different aspects.
They are among the very few bands that literally make you travel with their music. Really exciting considering the endless sadness we are about to face....

믿을 수가 없다. 여전히 전성기 때 폼으로 음반을 내고 있다니... 정말 다양한 시도가 이루어졌던 2000년대 초반 메탈 씬에서 빛이 나던 밴드들은 여전히 씬을 대표한 채로 굳건하구나. 곡 배치가 아티스트에 의해서 짜여서 음반이 트랙의 완급조절로 짜임새를 논하던 그 때의 치밀함이 그대로 느껴져서 오랜만에 CD를 재생하며 음악을 듣는 느낌이었음. Blood upon stone 들으면서 이 음반의 종반부로 치달을 때 다시 2~30대 청춘으로 돌아가며 머리 주구 장창 돌리던 그 때가 떠올랐음. masterpiece!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR (2022)
So many remarkable parts in the album, that section towards the end of Blood Upon Stone is so emotional and larger than life, only a band like Cult of Luna to pull that off. Another brilliant chapter from a household name in music no matter the genre.
Just think about the intro, in a few seconds Cult of Luna mesmerize all your senses. 🤘
The ending of Blood upon stone is eternal, is almost a catarsis

I just saw them live and they closed with Blood Upon Stone. The ending will stay with me forever

This completely blew my mind...
Very few bands can achieve such an unique sound like Cult of Luna do. The Long Road North is massive in scope and vision. The restrained, slow-burn melodies and brooding atmospherics balance perfectly against the ruinous heaviness (the title track perfectly encapsulates both aspects of the sound). It’s a record that finds Cult of Luna in possibly the best form of their long career.
Guess I don't need to bother searching for my album of the year for the rest of 2022. This can't be topped.
I wrote the same thing back in 2013 when they released Vertikal (January as I remember). End of the game for the other bands ah ah!

i'm on my second listen.....man, i was sold on this as soon as i heard cold burn & they didn't disappoint. i wish full moon was so much longer though, if i had to nitpick.
this may be early to say, but this one might be in my top 3 COL albums/AOTY already.
how they keep outdoing themselves constantly is beyond me. absolute banger, yet again.

to me full moon serves as an intro to The Long Road North and is just one long song, how it fades in seamlessly. first listen I didn't even notice it was two tracks
The call backs in the guitar playing are smooth, there is a strong theatrical presence and the chord progressions throughout are meaningful. Staying somewhat true to a post-metal/rock writing style severely pleases me aswell. Yes... Severely. (Also, those Western/Blues tones though :0 )
And once more during a troubling and low point in my life you guys come around and deliver the soundtrack to get me through all of it, thank you!

@@guillermolopez1377 Raging River is pretty good, but they have a ton more to offer on their older albums. A Dawn to Fear is more recent (2019) and shouldn’t be missed either. I’m a relatively new fan too, and speaking for myself, their albums Vertikal and Mariner were the ones that pulled me in the quickest. But they’re all awesome so ya can’t go wrong
A Google music notification popped up today that there was a new COL album. I'm a big fan of Agalloch and also like ISIS and other things post Metal. Haven't listened to COL a ton but somehow knew this would be great. It definitely didn't disappoint.
Omg Mariam Wallentin (Vocalist in Beyond 1) does the intro music for Raised By Wolves. Love her voice. What an epic collaboration.

I am stunned at the level of song writing and genre bending. I'm getting Thrice mixed with elements of atmospheric black metal. 🔥🔥🔥

Totally, that part is incredible. You're lulled into a false sense of security with repetition from the main riff, then they hit you with that open section. Tribal drums lead the way while swaths of guitar and keys wash over you, all while riding the low end on bass. It even intensifies when the distorted vocals come in. Sounds like lost hope after an arduous journey. Puts me right there.

The last show I saw before the pandemic ; March 2020 as it was the perfect soundtrack for the apocalypse that was about to unfold
I saw them on Leap Day in February and felt EXTREMELY lucky to do so as I hadn't seen them in like 6 years and the first show I had ever seen of them was the first time I'd ever heard *of* them and they completely blew me away like no other live band has ever done.

This is so Amazing. Congratulations.
Once again, I am absolutely not disappointed. CoL is hands down my favorite and most loved metal band. This album certainly feels different from The Raging River and even a little different from A Dawn to Fear, but that's absolutely ok. It CoL for sure, but I love that it's its own mesmerizing album. I can't wait to listen again tomorrow when I'll really have time to soak it all in.

Probably their most dense album to date. I love that this album contains too much for me to take in all at once, but still remains a captivating listen nonetheless. The experimentation that they’ve been doing since Vertikal while retaining their core sound has made that album onward my favorite era of Cult Of Luna
