That fact that we haven't had a continuation of the I-War franchise is insulting. They've rehashed every other dead damn horse. Or any of the Klingon Academy Star Trek games.
The original I-War was a unfortunately forgotten milestone of a space game with slight RP elements, choices, multiple endings, and a spacecraft Sim like never before. Today's games should take a page from this Sim and game mechanics. Yes, in Elite Dangerous one can switch off some automatic flight aids to have an experience inspired by newtonian physics, but it doesn't feel the same as in I-War. Sadly I have difficulties to get it to run on my new PC.
I stumbled across Chorus by accident and it brought back strong memories of one of my favourite space games ever Freelancer. The only thing I really miss is that it doesn't give you a target lead indicator. I really loved being able to fire lasers into empty space only for the enemy to fly straight into the path of your bolts.
No other Space Simulation Games will ever reach the level of gaming similar to the Descent Freespace Series (Freespace: The Great War, Silent Threat and Freespace 2)

Thank you for the video. One game I have never seen anyone talk about or played is Starshatter: The Gathering Storm. I played this game so much. You start as a fighter/bomber/interceptor pilot and thru a dynamic campaign (how your missions are completed or not) the war changes for better or worse. You collect commendations and advance in rank. Later you can for instance command a group of frigates or even later an entire carrier group with battleships, destroyers, frigates and different fighter/bomber/interceptor wings, all these times you are stationed on your bridge in first person but you can change to outside view or mapmode to easier command your ships and fighters. Atmospheric flight is a bit wonky but in the space they use real newtonian physics. Just because you cut power to the engine doesnt mean your ship will stop so you need to balance your thrust so you dont miss a navigation beacon by kilometers when taking a turn.
Independence War 2!!! This game brings back so much Nostalgia for me and have been waiting for it to make the series. I will pick up Interstellar Pilot 2 for the Steam Deck also....So cheap and never heard of it!
Clicked on this link specifically to mention IWar2 and there it is. I've played this game every year or so ever since it released, it holds up, it's got a good storyline (great for it's time), and the mechanics are fun once you get used to them. Flying by numberpad only if you don't have a joystick (i've never tried getting it to work with the mouse) does suck at first but at this point i'm just used to it. There are some issues getting it to work on modern systems, definitely grab the latest GOG version. but once it's working the fun begins. It's very moddable, after I complete the main storyline I usually turn my ship into the White Star from Babylon 5 and go pirate hunting until it's time to put it into hibernation for the year.
Chorus is really really good space shooter, similar to Everspace 2 , with side quest and good action. Its shares similarities with 6D shooters like Descent than with Freelancer for examples

The Klingon Academy....that hit my nostalgia button like a heavy torpedo... was enamored with anything Trek back then but.... the mission progression (twice if I recall, first in simulations then in the "real" seat, all star system to prowl until you managed the mission)... the voice acting and inspired script....the music and ambiance....the graphics (still remember those heavy torpedoes punching through the saucer section)...the energy allocation commands configuring the ship on the desired profile (offensive defensive, flight, cloak, passive...something like typing 14353 and hearing the bridge officers confirming the orders... Plus, the acting was spot on (the sequel on the Federation side felt..awkward). I would very much like to play this again. If someone did a upscaling of the graphics it would be great.
