It works by activating your bagel nerve which puts your nervous system into a different mode. If this practice works well for you try lengthening the count, Russell’s was only about 4 but I usually do 8 - 10. It totally changes your state of mind, lowers blood pressure and heart rate, also comically it gets your digestive system working so sometimes things need to happen shortly after doing this kind of practice.

“We don’t meditate to achieve the right state of mind, to sit in meditation is it self the right state of mind” (Paraphrasing Shunryu Suzuki)
Do not try control your thoughts, they are an expression of the universe too. Let them flow, neither grasping nor rejecting them. Watch them like watching leaves fall from a tree or clouds flowing on a moonlit night.
“Through attachment blossoms fall, through aversion weeds spread”.
When you think or try to explain the “moment” that moment has already past you by.
By trying to explain the moment, we neglect the moment staring right in our faces.
Yet this thinking and explaining is nothing but the moment it self. The universe expressing it self so to speak.
So just sit & watch, listen, feel

Just this morning, I would recognise the thought and return back to the breath, but within seconds, I mean seconds, another thought would arise and this process kept happening round and round, again and again, constant and really fast paced.
I wasn’t aggressive or hard on myself, but I was thinking, is this ping pong and constant back and forth normal? Or should I be more concentrated? And have longer periods of peace with the breath?

I love this exercise and you make it so accessible with your down to earth approach. I started Kundalini Yoga when I retired, it was literally a spur of the moment, turning up to a yoga class that I hadn't tried before. And it was an absolute revelation to me that I'd finally found some tools to quiet my chattering mind. I was so relaxed after the meditation session at the end, that I felt I needed to give myself a little time before I drove my car ( sort of a slightly drunk sensation). Thanks for sharing, I'm now going to check out your guided meditations on Luminary.

I think you’d do better counting out 8 - 10 seconds instead of 4. Also this works by stimulating the bagel nerve, it tells your body there can’t be any danger because if you were in a dangerous situation you wouldn’t be breathing like this. It lowers blood pressure and heart rate and is very affective for dealing with panic attacks, anyway. The slower the better. 4 seconds isn’t really going to get all the benefits.

This really works! Atom Bergstrom has spoken of individuals who don't need to meditate because they are sort of doing it all the time as they mindfully occupy the present and I think I used to be one of those people so setting aside time to do it is foreign to me. But post being committed & pumped full of thorazine 2013 I haven't been finding myself centered in the flow of creation or beaming love and light like before. Chronic pain and fatigue and traumatic brain injury also inhibit my ability to occupy the present. Today I had Boiled Frogs( great but downer song) stuck in my head & just decided enough already. I'm cautious about following along with the meditations of others because I'm cautious about what energy and intentions to align with, who I want in my party of conscious co-creation right & I feel good about you, Russell. Also, I'm highly visual and one of the things I do is envision the light in my core, then grow it around myself to form a sphere of light, finally wrapping the sphere in gold chrome as I acknowledge & reality being holographic protection and reflection of my being and I think having the arms overhead really brings the energy of that visualization into the physical just beautifully. Thank you. ~°love*&*light°~

Thank you Russell, I haven't done much Kundalini practice, but I will do more now.
One of my Doggies comes to say hi during meditation too. So I pick him up and he sits on my lap. I like to believe that he picks up the vibration of peace. I hope so, cos he's a nut 🙂

Really like this - been doing it for a while. It helps me to focus on the exercise. Instead of 'Watch with Mother' (for those old enough as me to remember the BBC kiddies programme of yesteryear), we have 'Meditate with Russell' 😁. Works for me!

I have been practicing Art of Living breath work for the last couple months, meditating at least twice a day. I am not sure I like having Guru Ravi Shankar. He is kind and benevolent, but every course is pricey. I have always believed that leaning to meditate and to gather in meditation should be the gift we give each other. . I also follow Sam Harris meditation app. Not a big fan of your mouth breathing friend. I think nasal breath-work is more effective. I am a biologist and not a respiratory expert. I appreciate you, Russell Brand. You are authentic, kind and engaging, and sometimes tucking hilarious, which I adore. Still figuring it all out. But I know the breath is the way to spiritual enlightenment and beyond. 🧡🧡

I have been struggling through anxiety of panic even this 6th year after suddenly losing my 17 year old Son. I am fighting for normalcy to return so I can thrive again. This is my first time doing this particular meditation with you and it was awesome. I loved the setting of you sitting outside, I loved your dog, and I appreciated the mantras spelled out on the screen. Now my arms feel puffed up like Popeye’s which is a new one for me lol. Thank you, Russell for all you do to help all of humanity. Even little old me across the pond in California (yikes, I really need this!)

To the simple one might think the shepherd had more sense. But rhythmic breathing on a count (try a metronome Russel) is the best stress buster. The dog really does know, and is jealous of your slow pant.

I have said before. According to my TM Teacher . When thoughts arise during Meditation, it is stress being released. So let the thoughts come, and then let them go.
