    I have never had a dog so easy to train, and so much personality.

    We rescued one of these as a puppy during Katrina Hurricane. She passed away October 2019, after 14 years of outdoor adventures, and family love. If I could find another, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

    Best dog ever. I think I got the odd one. She doesn’t like water at all, not even getting her paws wet. Everything else fits perfectly the description

    My parents had a dog years ago that was always mistaken for being a flat coated retriever, but he was actually mixed with some golden retriever in him. Goodness me, his personality was pretty much identical to all the FCRs I've seen on UA-cam; very affectionate and social, playful all his life, intelligent, and definitely loved water and mud, lol. Thankfully he lived to be thirteen. He succumbed to kidney failure and his condition worsened so fast that he was put to sleep a few days after he started to weaken. It was clearly his time to leave this earth...but he lived a very good, healthy life and didn't have to suffer in his old days, very happy about that =)

    Flat coated retrievers are absolutely incredible. They are like the perfect dog in every single way, other than one...cancer and early deaths :(

      I have an Irish Setter... He's amazing! But only 4 years old and will probably never reach the age of 5 because of his heart valve problem....

      Shockingly our FCR is currently 17! Not only unusual for a FCR but unusual for a big dog in general. Such an amazing breed.

    Love flatcoats. Just got one from my parents which is the 5th generation in our family. Her sister, Mum and Grandma still doing well at home. The perfect companions. The short life expectancy is the hardest part :(

    • @DogAdviceVideos
      @DogAdviceVideos  3 роки тому

      interested in what life expectancy you have experienced? It's not something I'd heard about in connection with this breed?

      @@DogAdviceVideos It's probably the worst thing about them is that they are prone to cancer. We lost the first aged 6 as she had a tumour in an unfortunate place. Her daughter (Grandma) sadly passed away last month aged 11 so she had a better run. Next one is currently 8 and doing fine. I think 10 is the average which isn't very long really. Flatcoats do take your heart but they really break it when they go.

    I have a FCR and is amazing. Pure joyful energy. He is a fundamental part of my family and Life. I highly recommend this breed to dog lovers. I regret it's not popular in Italy as deserved.

    Another FCR owner here. He's 9 and still bouncing up and down. Altho smart never underestimate their random/jokey side. This morning when I came home from work instead of greeting me in the kitchen where he sleeps he went straight upstairs tail wagging furiuously and got into my bed!! 😀

    Just adopted a 4 yr old that the foster says is a flat coat retriever, though adoption website says mixed breed. He looks just like one. Am hoping he’s not a “nightmare” to train as said here in the video as he’s been a stray then fostered and not walked for many months. Here’s hoping!

    What makes up a flat coat? My puppy looks just like this but his mom is a pure golden and dad looks like Australian shepherd.

    My dog gets mistaken for the flat coated retriever a lot. Hes half border collie and the other half is black lab and golden retriever. Same energy level, smarts and temperament as the flat coated it seems

    I heard that The flat coated retriever came from the Newfoundland and labrador retriever and then used setter and spaniel type

      Not the lab but the St John's water dog, which is what the lab came from as well

    We had a boy Flat coated along a cat. Got to be best friends.
    In 2008, the cat died at the age of 17 yrs after he choked in some meat he was eating.
    After this the dog quite clearly lost his will to live after his best friend for the last 16 yrs was gone so he stopped eating, didn't want to go for walk anymore.
    He past away 14 days later

    My flat coat has these long things behind his ears and no one seems to know what they are .. Even his Vet.. I got him a little Beagle Hound as a friend and he chewed them off ..I found them lying in the floor one day.. It didn't seem to bother Buddy that they were gone.. Now about 3 months later they started growing back and are about 4 inches long again.. Bobo, my Beagle, has gotten out of the chewing stage so he hasn't bothered them so far.. Just wish I knew why he has them and I haven't seen them on any others... in pics or live,..

    • @alexserrano5367
      @alexserrano5367 5 років тому +1

      classickruzer1 My dog had them too , it could be that they’re nots from not brushing behind his ears enough. Use scissors carefully to cut them off ,when the hair began to grow back make sure to brush in that area .And look for a new vet your vet sounds like a clown didn’t even bother to figure out what it was ? Sound like a clown

      @@alexserrano5367 WOW ..Thanks for that info.. I've never had a flat coat before..just 2 chocolate labs who passed 4 years ago at 13 years.. Buddy is adopted. I adopted or really, he adopted me.. He was caught in a bad storm and couldn't find his family.. Four months later we did, but Buddy escaped after 2 weeks with them and I got up one morning and he was lying on my front porch.. I opened the door and he was all over me.. I took him back and they asked if I would keep him until they had a better place for him.. That was over 3 years ago and they've moved somewhere, and never came back for him.. My Vet is probably in his late 80's and I've used him for a long time.. But he does seem to be less attentive now. Thanks for the info..I'll get his groomer to cut them like you said and pay more attention in that area.. Thanks again.. Buddy says thanks too..

    We have had four flatcoats all different but all clearly flatcoats. Three died of cancer aged 13, 11 and the last one tragically at just 8. They were hard work but there was never a dull moment and as long as they could go for a swim they were happy. We had the first two together along with a Tervueren and we would take them to Clumber Park in the Land Rover and they would swim all the way around the lake. We even went in the Winter and they would go across the ice to have a swim. I was going to add a photo but the option doesn't see to be available here.
