OLW is short for Old London Wasa. Wasa from the company Wasabröd (Wasabread) that makes hard bread "knäckebröd". And Old London was the name of an american company's (Borden Foods) factory in New York. Wasa wanted to make snacks and made a deal with Borden Foods and created Cheez Doodles. They were only allowed to use the name Old London Wasa for a limited amount of years. So when the contract was over they just changed it to OLW.

Estrella currently has its home in my hometown, Gothenburg. The brand was founded as early as 1946… With the import of bananas. At that time, Folke Andersson was a true entrepreneur who could do business with most things. Juicer, caravans and much more were in his shop. But before the snack production started, it was mainly bananas that Folke was dealing with! He imported bananas from South America, and even today there is a football stadium named after him in Ecuador. Imports from South America are also what influenced the company name "Estrella" - which means "Star" in Spanish. In 1957, Folke Andersson tasted potato chips for the first time, during a boxing match in New York. It was the tastiest he's ever eaten. Folke decided to start making potato chips at home in Sweden. This makes Estrella the first company in Sweden to manufactor chips
Dill is an important herb in Sweden. It flavors mainly fish dishes, but also salads, snacks and snaps. The good thing is you can't overdose on dill. It has a maximum level flavor that doesn't increase if you add to it. And you want quite a bit of it. It's not pungent or overpowering in the least. Try fresh dill and caraway in your boiled potatoes. Let the caraway cook along the potatoes and add fresh dill in the last minutes of cooking. Stalks can cook along, the fine plumes are added last for decoration and more flavor. Sprinkle some salt and you're good to go. Goes well with any type of fish or red meat. If you can't find fresh dill, dried works almost as good. Oh, and we don't pronounce Estrella in Spanish. It's "es-TRE-la".
@@FromtheHobbitHole Also, pickling salt cucumbers with dill (in a sweetened/sour pickle juice) is amazing with various kinds of salty meats (like Salisbury steak).

Yes this are both the big brands of chips and dip in sweden. I sometime put more sour cream and pour over raw chicken and then cook in the oven. The ranch and holiday makes great sauces
Hi, my absolute favourite is Holliday, and the best is to peel carrots and then make sticks out of them and dip, you should try that. OLW is an abbreviation for Old London Wasa. I wish you a Happy New Year.

In Sweden sour cream usually come in perfect 3 dl cups. So i just pour my dip straight into the sour cream cup. Perfect cup for dipping. :P Also...I'm not sure of the exact number. But there is around 8-10 flavors from each of the 2 brands.
@@thobiasr1472 Ooh, you're absolutely right! I thought sour cream was their crappy version of creme fraiche, but it's actually gräddfil! 😂 This explains a lot! 😂🙈
My favourite, and also a childhood memory, is the dill an chives taste, with the dips in the same taste but i also like the holiday dip with different vegetables, my favourite are cucumber, pepper and cauliflower. I prefer the vegetables with dip before the chips. 😊
My favorites are fresh island dip with black pepper crisps ,some swap the sour cream for a thicker yoghurt. In Sweden this is one of the best ways for parents to make their kids eat vegetables. The dips are a great combination with cherrytomatoes, celery stalks, cucamber, bellpeppers & carrots cut in spears obviously.
9:08 first one was the right one, you pronounce the L:s, you`re right about the star thing but we don`t say it as the spanish anyway :D we say "Est" as you say "West but without the W, , and the name "Ella" but with a rolling R in the beginning
Nacho Cheese is my absolute favorite from OLW. You should try that one! It really stands out from the others since they usally use garlic, pepper and stuff like that in most dips which makes most dips taste a little bit the same. No dip is tasting like Nacho Cheese since it doesn't use those common ingridients that most dips use. The cheese taste is soooo good! .. ;)
Both are always found in the stores, I think they are the most common brands we have in Sweden. I like Ranch in the OLW dip. And Estrella when it comes to chips.
Wow I've come across your past few videos on youtube and I love 'em! You're so sweet together reviewing things! Glad you like our crisps and dip! Greetings from a fellow Swede
These are the two biggest snack brands. But are some other popular brands that specialize in crisps that are kettle-style and with interesting spices and herbal flavors. I usually prefer those. Svenska LantChips and Gårdschips. For an even taste, I usually let my dip cool in the refrigerator for about 15-30 minutes to make sure that the sour cream absorbs the mix and its flavors.
Today alot of new crisp makers pop up in Sweden.. and they are one of a kind.. the best Estrella and Olw lags behind! Funny fact I where at a job interview at Estrella here in Gothenburg as an machine repairer.. didn´t take the job so work with sealings for the offshore/nuclear industry around the world.
My favorite dip is probably Fresh Island, or Ranch (different brands but quite similar). About OLW (O L V) or Estrella, both are somewhat the leading brands. They usualy has somewhat similar "flavors" but different "tastes" and names. Carrot spears are also common (instead of cucumber).
I think we have like 15-20 different dips in Sweden and a lot of different crisp flavors to choose from but my favorite crisps are either the parmesan flavored potato crisps or if I don't want potato crisps we have sourcream and onion lentil crisps. Don't really have a favorite dip but if I have to choose one it would be the 3xLök(3XOnion). It's a dip with red onion, garlic, yellow onion, and ramsons(wild garlic?).
You are so sweet in how you approach the tasting. It just feels so respectful. Glad that you liked them. I prefer OLW to Estrella, and my favourite dips are actually Holiday, Ranch and Fresh Island. There is a spicy Holiday though that is suuuper good too. :) Why do you call them crisps instead of chips? :) If you do it to try to say it the way we do over where, we actually say chips like you do.
Holiday taste is Bellpeppers and onions that are the big flavours, Dill and chives( the green pack) is my favourite, and I use it for the crisps with the same flavour. The fresh island is similar to Rhode island dressing so thats probably why it goes well with vegetables. And ranch is ranch but I think the colour comes from tomato powder. And all of them is 4 of the most popular dips here. And yes you can mix them with naturall yoghurt to make sauses with less fat and they are good to eat with Other foods like grilled meat, but you have it like on the side you dont marinate the meat with it. Dill and chives, and holiday is also good to mix into unsalted butter to just put some on fish or meat right before eating. I also sometimes use holiday even I want a better/ intense taste of bellpepper in some recepies.
Fresh island is my favourite. Here in Sweden it is almost impossible to eat chips without dip. My favourite mix is jalapeño chips (from coop brand) and garlic dip by estrella brand.
Dill-& gräslök is my 🙌🏻❤️ of all time. And Holiday with cucumber, minicarrots and peppers is great.... I also use Holidaydip as my hamburgerdressing/sauce 🤩
My favorite one is Holiday. It's also the original. The flavor is green, red and yellow paprika (bell pepper) onion and garlic, and MSG lol. We have them in Norway too, but it's under a different brand name called Maarud, but the packaging is the same and the same parent company. Same with the chips. English word holiday refers to vacation, or a break from routine in Scandinavia, but the direct translation "helligdag" is used for holiday season like in the states.
In my experience, OLW and Estrella are about as common in the North of Sweden at least. Any mid-sized supermarket I can think of usually has two stands or some other space where they can display every available flavor for either brand but they usually don't put them next to each other. For instance, one brand on each end of the snacks-section or sometimes next to the sour-cream. Personally, my favorite is probably Holiday, it tastes great dipping cucumber sticks, baby carrots, or bell pepper wedges too Edit: I wrote this prior to watching the entire video so I hadn't seen you do the cucumbers :)
Thanks for a great video. 👍 Yesterday i ran into a new flavour by OLW that was amazing: 3x Onion. Garlic, chives and red onion. Was unable to stop cramming it in. But, im a swede soft for onions, so what to expect? ;)
My favorite dips are Holiday and Sour cream and onion. I always ask my parents to send some whenever they are sending me a package. (I live in Germany) Sour cream and onion dip is really good as a salad dressing as well. We usually mix it with a tiny bit of milk (after it is mixed like you did).
Sour-cream and onion dip by Estrella is my favorite dip with cucumbers and carrots One of my favorite dip and chips combinations are dill dip with dill chips both by Estrella.
Yes! "Holliday" I guess is means vaccation. Because I don't see any connection to any swedish holliday with the taste of it.. You can also tase carrot-spears or pices of califlower if you want healthier snacks to dip.
I guess. Or it could be like a collective word for a "special" occasion like birthdays, weekends, party or when you just wanna treat yourself with something special maybe. "TV decadence" would be a better name ;)
you can make a really good meal out of the ranch dipp as well as the others.. for me i used to fill a chicken with veggies such as carrots brocoli and that ranch dipp. sew it together. and boom you have a wobnderfull meal;) we sweds like spices and we do like to mix around but for some reason, we never reached the bridge to be famous for that insteed of darn IKEA hahahah. but i promiss you guys, you just got a few of our chips and a few of our dipps...there is alot more.. and they are all tasty..some more then others...but it is for sure tasty stuff..and for holliday means.being of work.. like for summer ..its our biggest holliday
This was great fun to watch! You just had the most common type of swedish crisps and by the look of you it seemed you enjoyed it. But there are many other flavors that I personally think is better. What is the most common type of crisps in the states. I have always imagined that your products tastes like a sucker punch with the flavor the packaging tell. And by now you must have figured out that I’m a Swede (but with Finnish roots)
I just read the table of contents for the fresh island and the holiday/ vaccation one and the fresh island has tomato, baclkpepper and garlic which the other one doesnt have..
Nice vid! If you ever get the chance I think you should try the Västkustchips (West coast crisps) from Estrella, especially the garlic/chive/chili flavour. In my opinion it's Sweden's No. 1 crisp.
About Estrella. The company was founded by entrepreneur Folke Andersson in 1946. Back then they imported bananas from South America so it is the spanish word for "star". Folke went to New York in the 50s and tasted potato chips for the first time and loved them. He then started manufacturing snacks himself. Estrella is located outside Gothenburg.
@@FromtheHobbitHole Visited Estrella many times for work so have it fresh in mind. Also been eating waaay to much snacks over the years....🙂 Great channel btw!👍
Holiday is a very bad translation from the swedish word "helg", which means both "holiday" and "weekend". Potato chips are a traditional weekend snack in Sweden. The dip should be called "Weekend".
@Jäs Please Exactly, thank you. Holiday, like you have the weekend off from work. We have that Holiday dip here in Norway too, and it's one of my top favourites. And I also like the Ranch one, but unfortunately, we can't get that here. But Holiday goes with almost any chips, because the flavor isn't owerpowering. And I agree with Nathan and Hailey, the dill/gräslök one probably would be good with some nice fried fish. And they're right, gräslök is chives in english. It translates from swedish to something like "Grass onion", as it looks like grass straws, but has that onion like taste to it.
You are so likeable! I'm really glad I found you. It'd be fun if you could get a hold of ome more Swedish sweets and snacks, like Djungelvrål (super-salty licorice) and Ahlgrens Bilar. Maybe Sweetish could import some? One can hope...
I do not know which flavors are most popular in Sweden. But I usually buy Garlic or Hot Holiday. .... Holiday has flavors from peppers, chili and red onions. And everyone tastes good... the chips I use are neutral.
So the thing that make the other ones not vegan friendly is that they tend to have whey and quite often skimmed milk powder. The sign on the Holiday mix was added quite recently but it has always been vegan, at least they did not raise the price when that happened. (OLW recently made some vegan dip-mixes, but those are more expensive then the once you have there) As for the brands, OLW has had a few owner through the years but except from Borden Foods investment when they started it has been kept in the Nordic countries at least. Meanwhile Estrella while started as a Swedish company had Kraft Foods as owners but are now owned by Norweigan Herkules Private Equity Fund. For how common it is, you will find both in most stores and people will have strong opinions on what brand is best. Holiday dip is marketed as the most sold one too, but I can't find the reason for the name. I guess it is just beause it is a nice sounding English word and you eat chips when you have time off. Also you pronunce Estrella with hard lls so not in the Spanish way.
@@FromtheHobbitHole Yeah, it's not about any specific holiday at least (although, I can see why you might think so, considering the name). I think it could be intended more in sense that the British use "holiday" as their preferred word for "vacation", but I feel like it's really just a name that is supposed to sound kind of nice and relaxed (possibly by way of invoking thoughts of summer vacation?). The name being in English might give it a bit more leeway as "just a name that sounds nice" as well. It's one of these products that have been around for ages, too. The manufacturer does not really allude to why it has the name in current marketing at least, and I don't believe it has been any clearer in the last few decades at least.
I´ve never used more than 2 desiliters of sour creme for the base of dip souce becouse they sell it in that size precisely. Never tried to mix those to crème fraîche either. We also have hot version of the Holliday (at least in Finland) and damn it´s good. Also garlic & chili is awsome. Both of those are Estrella dips. I also use that garlic dip with tortillas. It fits perdectly. It´s good also with salmon and potatoes and many times i put it into my salad to cover salad dressing.
Yaaaaaay more videos. Keep being awesome 😃 Holiday is like Christmas / Easter in Sweden too. Vacation is time off work. 30 days off / year ❤️ Estrella is pronounced estrella you pronounce the l as l not j, that’s mostly because Swedes generally speaking don’t tend to speak Spanish. We mispronounce the word
Your sourcream looks so thick. When i make dip (here in sweden) you can almost pour it out of the bowl after mixing. But after 20min in the fridge it's just right. My fav combo is Estrella Grill or Estrella Grill & Garlic with the Fresh Island dip. Wow! Also, dipping jumbo cheeze doodles is amazing.

In Finland those Estrella dip powders are mixed with 2dl of kermaviili which is kind of sour cream but with less fat.
In Sweden sour cream usually come in perfect 3 dl cups. So i just pour my dip straight into the sour cream cup. Perfect cup for dipping. :P
Also...I'm not sure of the exact number. But there is around 8-10 flavors from each of the 2 brands.
That’s super helpful having the containers being the exact size!
Except, gräddfil is MUCH better for dip! 😁
@@attesmatte But that is what it means. Did you have it mixed up with crème fraîche?
@@thobiasr1472
Ooh, you're absolutely right! I thought sour cream was their crappy version of creme fraiche, but it's actually gräddfil! 😂 This explains a lot! 😂🙈
@@FromtheHobbitHole I think the bags are designed to match the common serving size of gräddfil, it’s not random luck :-)
My favourite, and also a childhood memory, is the dill an chives taste, with the dips in the same taste but i also like the holiday dip with different vegetables, my favourite are cucumber, pepper and cauliflower. I prefer the vegetables with dip before the chips. 😊
My favorites are fresh island dip with black pepper crisps ,some swap the
sour cream for a thicker yoghurt. In Sweden this is one of the best ways for parents to make their kids eat vegetables. The dips are a great combination with cherrytomatoes, celery stalks, cucamber, bellpeppers & carrots cut in spears obviously.
We love dips with all kinds of veggies, too! It definitely does help one eat vegetables having them covered in flavoring 😜
The cheese taste is soooo good! .. ;)
For Cheese doodles and dip I think OLW is the best but for crisps Estrella wins hands down..
Hello! Thanks for the kind compliments. 😊 It’s nice to hear when people like yourself enjoy the videos we make 😁
These are the two biggest snack brands.
Holiday is just a cool name for us swedes. You should try the Chipotle cheddar dip. Sweet but with a kick mmm 😁. Have to go and get some now.
I've honesty never seen the Chipotle/cheddar dip in the stores I go to. Are those only sold in like the bigger stores? (Swede here also obviously)

"OLW" is prononuced o-el-ve =)
"För att ni älskar det goda!"
We like dipping carrots into dips as well! Along with broccoli, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes, and celery.
It's a dip with red onion, garlic, yellow onion, and ramsons(wild garlic?).
the dill and gräslök (dill and chives) is the most classic. 3 dl is about 1 and a half cup, one cup is about 2 dl.
You should try out dipping carrots and red pepper in the holiday dip. It's really yummy. ^^
Bet it is!
Fun video, but now I’m hungry!! Gonna go grab some crisps and ranch dip!! Keep the food tastings coming!! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Julie! Enjoy your crisps and ranch!!
Hi guy's.To me a Holly day is like a semester in the summertime.Great video by the way.
Thanks!! ☺️
You are so sweet in how you approach the tasting. It just feels so respectful. Glad that you liked them.
I prefer OLW to Estrella, and my favourite dips are actually Holiday, Ranch and Fresh Island. There is a spicy Holiday though that is suuuper good too. :)
Why do you call them crisps instead of chips? :) If you do it to try to say it the way we do over where, we actually say chips like you do.
Yeah Holiday is my favorite too.
Though it's rare to eat flavoured crisps and dip. I think most people just have salted crisps with dip.
Holiday taste is Bellpeppers and onions that are the big flavours,
Dill and chives( the green pack) is my favourite, and I use it for the crisps with the same flavour.
Didn’t think how fresh island and Rhode Island are similar flavors. Good to know that you do t actually use the dip in dressing form as a marinade.
Holiday dip on hamburger sounds amazing!
Maybe someone have mentioned it but those mixes fits well with food as well, for example grilled meat.
Thanks for the insight on the “holiday” word! And don’t you just love msg? 😜
sometimes cucumbers and even carrots are used with those dips. i actually think its better.
Personally, my favorite is probably Holiday, it tastes great dipping cucumber sticks, baby carrots, or bell pepper wedges too
Edit: I wrote this prior to watching the entire video so I hadn't seen you do the cucumbers :)
Thanks for a great video. 👍 Yesterday i ran into a new flavour by OLW that was amazing: 3x Onion. Garlic, chives and red onion. Was unable to stop cramming it in. But, im a swede soft for onions, so what to expect? ;)
Dill and Gräslök dip is my favorite! :D
Food thinking with the addition of the milk!
OMGOODNESS IDK how I missed this video. Those dips looked yummy. And the whole time (you can ask Vicki) I was like “stop your potato allergy.”
😂😂😂
I love that you had cucumber with the fresh island flavor! It's my absolute favorite and it's always the one sold out first where I live lmao
Sour-cream and onion dip by Estrella is my favorite dip with cucumbers and carrots
One of my favorite dip and chips combinations are dill dip with dill chips both by Estrella.
The dill dip and dill chips combo is a good one.
in Spanish, esterella is also used for movie stars (as well as Actor and Actriz = actor and actress)
That's because estrella means star in Spanish like you know a star....
My Favorite for many years was to dip the Sourcream and Union Chips in the Dill and Gräslök dip, it's a so unexpected and good combination!
It sounds like a great combination!
Sometimes I add dip mix with the flour when I make waffles or scones to get some flavor, usually Holiday flavored.
Din jävla galning. Blir de mycket smak???
Brilliant idea, Jim!
Dill våfflor...🤢
Nej, jag tror nog ingen väljer dill@@PeterOekvist

of the dips you hav there a probebly whuld go for holliday or ranch but my favorit is Tortilla Dippmix from estrella
Tortilla dip mix? Now that sounds really good!!
@@FromtheHobbitHole my favorites are either brand's garlic or hot chilli.
Hot tip. Those Dill chips together with Marabou chocolate! Either mjölkchoklad or Apelsinkrokant!
you can make a really good meal out of the ranch dipp as well as the others.. for me i used to fill a chicken with veggies such as carrots brocoli and that ranch dipp. sew it together. and boom you have a wobnderfull meal;) we sweds like spices and we do like to mix around but for some reason, we never reached the bridge to be famous for that insteed of darn IKEA hahahah. but i promiss you guys, you just got a few of our chips and a few of our dipps...there is alot more.. and they are all tasty..some more then others...but it is for sure tasty stuff..and for holliday means.being of work.. like for summer ..its our biggest holliday
recommends that also dip with
Carrot. So good:)
Holiday dip works best out of any dip with veggies, but I also like it with any chip!
Those few ingredients make such a big difference!
You can use cuccumbers, carrots, bellpepper. Heck even spread it on a corncub.
We also like cherry tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and mushrooms with dips like these!
We call the chips in sweden so it should be perfectly fine to call them just that. We arent english. :)
We are used to calling them crisps in all of our UK tasting videos 😜
Fresh Island is me and my girlfriends go to dip if not the Ranch dip is available. Goes great with the Sourcream & Onion chips or Cream Cheese chips.
We have one with only garlic too here in Sweden, to bad it wasn’t there for you to try. It’s my favourite 👅
Too bad is right!
Nice vid! If you ever get the chance I think you should try the Västkustchips (West coast crisps) from Estrella, especially the garlic/chive/chili flavour. In my opinion it's Sweden's No. 1 crisp.
We’ll add it to our list of items to try!
Thanks for the history lesson! 😊
@@FromtheHobbitHole Visited Estrella many times for work so have it fresh in mind. Also been eating waaay to much snacks over the years....🙂
Great channel btw!👍
What’s wrong with eating lots of snacks?? 😜 And thank you! 😊💚💛
Those Dill n Graslok chips is my childhood favs ...I figured only the UK used the crisps word we use the chips as you guys ofc
We got in the habit of saying crisps in our tasting videos since we’ve primarily done UK snacks and candy, but typically we call them chips. Lol
Holiday is a very bad translation from the swedish word "helg", which means both "holiday" and "weekend". Potato chips are a traditional weekend snack in Sweden. The dip should be called "Weekend".
Ahhh...now that makes sense!
Aw thanks!! ☺️ We are glad you found us too! 💚💛 We hope to make more Swedish videos in the future 😉
I'm an Estrella boy, I think they have crispier chips than OLW which I personally like
Grillchips Needs to be OLW though. Rest I can agree with.
tzatziki-dipp with vegetables like cucumber, carrot and cauliflower.😋😋😋
We love tzatziki!!
@@FromtheHobbitHole I don't remember if it OLW or Estrella do. 🤔.and in Sweden it's Chips, and in UK Crisp..👍
Holiday is my favorite with chips but sometimes with cucumber and/or carrot sticks.
When I use a recipe with cups I have to google the amount every time since I only have deciliter measures lol
😂
Holiday for us is vaccation, like going away for summer
I do not know which flavors are most popular in Sweden.
But I usually buy Garlic or Hot Holiday.
.... Holiday has flavors from peppers, chili and red onions.
And everyone tastes good... the chips I use are neutral.
Hot holiday? Now that sounds good!
@@FromtheHobbitHole Is the same taste as regular Holiday with a stronger chili :)
So the thing that make the other ones not vegan friendly is that they tend to have whey and quite often skimmed milk powder. The sign on the Holiday mix was added quite recently but it has always been vegan, at least they did not raise the price when that happened. (OLW recently made some vegan dip-mixes, but those are more expensive then the once you have there)
As for the brands, OLW has had a few owner through the years but except from Borden Foods investment when they started it has been kept in the Nordic countries at least.
It’s interesting that the Holiday name is just a fun name and doesn’t seem to have any meaning. Thanks for the comment packed full of great info!
Well, whether the mix is vegan friendly or not doesn't really matter if you mix it with a dairy product.
My all time favorite scent is the smell of a freshly opened bag of Dill & Gräslök chips. =)
It does smell amazing!
We call the weekend holiday (helgdag in Swedish), since Sunday is a holy day literally.
Great video. Made me crave chips! :) Why are you calling them crisps? I thought that was a UK thing? In Sweden we say chips .
Yaaaaaay more videos. Keep being awesome 😃
Holiday is like Christmas / Easter in Sweden too. Vacation is time off work. 30 days off / year ❤️
Estrella is pronounced estrella you pronounce the l as l not j, that’s mostly because Swedes generally speaking don’t tend to speak Spanish.
Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if our sour creams have different thicknesses. Great idea dipping cheese doodles in the dip!
