    I remember when Jonathan Ross did that Channel 4 show back in the 1980s. It was the first thing he ever did. I remembered him as being less of a prick in those days - it seems I remembered wrong.

    I wasn't sure whether they were on the show together, but I've just checked and they were on together for about 24 episodes, numbers 377 to 400.

    Wow! Fair play to Val re: the gay rights comment! Although I have never found Australia to be the bastion of LGBT rights, so she wasn't entirely correct, but it was still a point well made - particularly for the time.

  • @zaniac100
    @zaniac100 13 років тому +4

    Ross's question about the lesbian following is simply wrong because in Australia the show was simply a mainstream popular success - in PRIME TIME - 8.30 PM (not late at night) for eight years on a maintream commercial network. It was not cult in Australia. "Cult" shows in Australia simply do not get made. The only shows that continue are those that are commercially popular with wide audiences. We don't have the population to sustain "cult" shows.

    • @NickSBailey
      @NickSBailey 8 місяців тому +1

      definitely mainstream at the time though cult later, not many would watch it over and over again the way its hardcore fans do, and it does have a huge gay following

      @@NickSBaileyyou're right. Prisoner does have a cult following and a big gay fan base too.

      I loved the show used to
      Watch it with my mum and dad as we'll sometimes
      It was always on late nights in the UK on regional TV it was pure rubbish but good at the same time 🎉

    god makes you forget what a total tosser Ross actually is and good ol Val for standing up and burying him in this interview

      ace sigma I don't understand what she was standing up to him and burying him about. I'm glad he and the audience didn't agree with her for her to have to smile, joke and laugh it off to make it look like it didn't bother her. 😄😃

    @Summerskill I think up until the conservative Howard government got into power in the mid 90s, Australia WAS more progressive on gay rights etc, but they have slipped back, where under Labour since 97 we have forged forward way ahead of them.

    • @Summer21.
      @Summer21. 4 роки тому

      DistantCousin I'm happy to hear that you guys did manage to forge forward way ahead of any political party who either wanted to stop LGBT rights, or not do a good job of improving LGBT rights. 😃😊👏🏻👍🏻

    I've known about this upload for years but this is probably the first time I've watched it. I enjoyed it, ok it's a shame it's a tad crackly but it's still brilliant. I think they will never beat the original Cell Block H the remake as in Wentworth just didn't sit with me, of course Cell Block H is thinly based on the UK's Within These Walls and the other connection is of course Reg Grundy.

  • @zaniac100

    @Summerskill No argument that Val is cocky! Aust was doing soaps with main gay characters starting in 1972 (search youtube for 'Number 96' and 'The Box') it is isn't a big deal. There will always be ppl complaining about gay and lesbian issues - in every country and in every year.

    • @Summer21.
      @Summer21. 4 роки тому

      Mel Bourne I'm glad we agree on Val's behaviour being a lot to be desired, which I don't accept from any person. 😊😃
      Yes, I've seen Number 96 and I like it. That is good that Australia was progressive in showing gay characters on television even as far back as the 1960's before the UK started doing it. 😊😃👏🏻👍🏻
      It's a shame that there will be ignorant, stubborn morons who have issues with gay, bi and trans people in every country and in every year.
      I'm glad that people in other countries are more relaxed about the LGBT community, young and old, especially younger people who don't mind questioning their gender and sexuality these days too. 😃

      I also just saw a Young Doctors interview show with her in 2007, and she's still the same then. She is a lot like Pixie, just watered down. Pixie just seems like an exaggerated version of herself. She is very cute, I think! And I really liked Pixie in Prisoner, despite all the complaints about her being annoying.

    Didn’t help that HTV didn’t screen it any time before 11:30 - throughout most of its run, I lived in various forms of shared accommodation and had to turn the volume way down low - and even that was “too loud” - I could barely hear it in my bedroom - but, for some reason, I was told the next morning that it was too loud - staff even threatened to take my rental telly away from me or cut the power off in some places!

    Jonathan Ross was a total prick in this interview, and Val made sure she’d let him know. Interesting how times have changed, when he mentioned the word lesbians, the whole audience laughed along, as if it was some hysterical joke.

  • @jukechst
    @jukechst 13 років тому +1

    it's amazing. the word 'lesbian' was mentioned and the audience laughed nervously, Jonathan Ross looked uneasy asking, and Val gave him a straight and concise answer; Apart from the occasional gay and lesbian taunts, this would be unthinkable now? shames me to think that we are being told we are not very advanced when it comes to Lgbt issues, lol

    • @NickSBailey
      @NickSBailey 7 років тому +2

      She was probably right, in the UK we were really backwards during the 1980s when it came to LGBT rights and issues.

    • @Summer21.
      @Summer21. 4 роки тому

      Nicholas Sans Pasty I do believe that us Brits have moved forward now when it comes to LGBT issues, and we are not like they were in the 80's and 90's, which I hope Val knows by now. 😃

    Did Val say there that Australia was more relaxed about LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) people?
    I read a month ago on Digital Spy, that the conservative people in Oz have complained about gay characters/storylines in Neighbours, Home and Away and I guess other Aussie programmes, so not all Aussie natives are exactly that relaxed and decent in accepting LGBT people, are they?
    I don't want people getting funny, but there is some cockyness there, even if she is being nice too.

    Bea Smith is dead and Pixie went to the nut house :o)
    Interesting Judy McBurney's normal voice isn't as irritating as Pixie's
    I like the way Bea calls on Doreen and Lizzie to move Monica. Yeah right :o)
