    Getting our horses round and using their bodies correctly is so important. Roundness in horses is like good posture for us humans. Just like us, it’s important for them to have good posture in order to be healthy and happy. Not only is it easier for them to carry us and perform movements when they are round, it is an amazing feeling when your horse is round and in self-carriage. They feel so powerful, floaty, and are easily maneuverable.
    So…how do you get your horse round? Sometimes it seems harder than it should be! In this week’s video, I will be giving you three quick tips to get your horse round! If you want the full step-by-step guide for how to get your horse round, check out my 30 Days to Round Challenge! It’s one of my most popular courses, and enrollment is open now! (Plus were giving away $10,000 this year for the top 7 transformations!)
    What are the three steps to roundness?
    Correct Position - The first step is to check in with your rider position. A lot of times when we get super focused on getting our horse round, we end up leaning forward, pulling, and staring at their head. Instead, we want to be looking up, sitting back, and have a straight line ear, shoulder, hip, heel. We also need to have a straight line from our elbow to the horse’s bit.
    Go Forward - Next, we need to get our horse’s moving forward with energy and tempo. Before we even think about getting our horse round, we want to get them moving forward and seeking a light, steady contact on the bit.
    Supple and Bend - Once your horse is forward, then you can start working on suppleness through bending, and riding inside leg to outside rein. To do this, you first want to put your inside leg on and push your horse into the outside rein. Keep a steady outside rein to support your horse, then supple and give on the inside rein.
    These are the 3 steps to get your horse round! Watch the video where I go into more detail on how this works!
    I hope these tips help you work on roundness with your horse! Also, check out my 30 Days to Round Challenge! This course was super popular last year and now it is back with even more great content to help you with roundness! Inside the course, I teach you step-by-step how to get your horse round. Enrollment is open now and I would love to work with you inside the course!
    Happy Riding!
    Amelia

    When you discuss rider position the core is extremely important as well as the rider being symmetrical. The point of the rein aids is to move the shoulders -one needs to be discussed with the other. And yes forwardness is the first step. If riders do their body work off the horse (working on strengthening their core and their asymmetrical tendencies) they will create a forward horse on the aids naturally . This human body work entails discipline, daily work, and assessment and years to undo incorrect muscle memories . Look at the masters -they have done their human body work-off horse - to achieve a balance state therefore enabling the horse to be balance. When one sees this it is inspirational .

    I always thought of getting inside bend as an effective "cheat" to getting roundness with my horse, but this made me think about the biomechanical connection of suppling *into* roundness.

      Good reflection. When we look at the training scale, it becomes easier to see the connection from achieving suppleness before roundness and connection :)

    im riding a lesson horse right now who goes bit-less, can I still try this to get him round even bit-less? or is there something else to do with the hands?

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  10 місяців тому +4

      Great question! Horse can go round if they are in a bit or bitless options. It's important to ride them round for their health and soundness. And remember, it's not all about the hands, it comes from behind first!

    I start my riding thinking about where I am in the sadle if I'm straight moving with the horse or where I put my weight, and where I am the most balanced, and what affect it has on my horse. usually it affects both direction and bend even to the point where it affects my horse direction of leaning. Then I focus on both legs around the horse, and feel where my horse isn't straight. and then I work to try to make him as straight as possible, I tend to realise that making corners is a lot easier to help control the body and realize where the horse is or the use of oppesite bend. when he is straight I can bend or flex any direction so I usually focus on making the horse straight as the horse never is completely straight and that creates a different type of bend with a different goal :)
