  • Finding a rattle turns to be far harden than one might think. The rattle is on the passenger side, either in the door or the B pillar. I follow advice from a Ford service bulletin about know rattles and the strip down the B pillar and doors. I found a number of potential problems but no full resolution.

    I watch you in Poland, I also have a Mondeo and I consider it a good car.
    I have modernized mine a lot. I muted the whole cabin and it's great.

    I had the same. It was the front door moving against the door lock striker pin. 1st try greasing the pin. If that doesn't work the pin can be adjusted. Undo the 2 torn bolts and hit the striker pin sharply with a hammer. I think they must be tack welded or glued on the factory. The striker pin will then move. Adjust a little tighten the bolts back up. Make sure the door closes and opens. Go for a drive.

      Thanks. I’ll have a look at that as I did actually feel a little wear in the hinges when lifting the door but ignored it. That small door movement might cause it.

    Had the same problem and checked the seatbelt the same way you did. I also had noises coming out of my seat. I suggest you take a look at the plastic siding on your seat, between the door and your seat. Pull off adjustment knob and check fit of plastic seat cover.

    Another great video. I'd similar on my mk4 on the drivers side. I went through the exact same process as you. Over and above with foam and sticky weather strip etc. I could not find it. Drove me demented. I sold the car and bought a newer mk4.5 and so far so good. I love the videos. Thanks

      Thanks for this comment. I’m glad you enjoy the videos. The problem I have is I’m a little OCD and don’t like being beaten by a problem

      @@NigelEaland but Nigel I am exactly the same! If something is rattling on the car I can hear nothing only the rattle. I've been known to strip dashes at 2am I shit you not!

    So I had a rattle in my mk4 but on the drivers side although it didn't sound exactly like yours and I seem to remember it was mainly on acceleration. Coincidentally I looked at both the B pillar and the lock mechanism on the drivers door. I packed them both with a bit of foam carpet underlay and the rattle went away. Not sure which one fixed it as I did them at the same time but I have a feeling it was from the adjustable seat belt height slider and I think you can hear it a bit on your video. Sorry I can't be more specific but it was many moons ago and I'm now on a mk5 !

      Thanks for the comment. I know I should move on to a newer car but I love my mk4 and it’s my workhorse. Being old It’s also the source of many videos 😆. I’m reluctant to buy anything at the moment until the whole electric / hybrid / hydrogen fuel cell cars and infrastructure evolves more. Did you know there are just 6 hydrogen fuel stations around London. One in Birmingham, Swindon, Sheffield and 2 in Aberdeen. I don’t consider hybrids particularly clean when they use the engine to charge the battery, with energy transfer inefficiencies that’s not green at all. I’m very pro for cleaning up the world and the quicker these technologies develop so I can scrap my mk4 the better. I’ll get off my soapbox now and thanks for watching.

      @@NigelEaland No don't change the mk4 for the sake of it as they are good cars and in some respects you are being environmentally friendly by keeping it as long as you can. Mine was a 2.2 titx sport and had done ~120k miles which isn't too bad but there were more issues cropping up and I was seduced by the looks and gadgets on the mk5 although I think Alan Howatt believes the mk4 to be more robust than the mk5. I'm waiting for the EV market to evolve as well as I'm a 2nd hand buyer as I still haven't got my head around leasing although that might change at some point. The 2nd hand market is limited in the EV space as its only in the past year or so that there have been more choices of new EV's and those will take some time to tickle down to be 2nd hand. TBH I was looking at the Vauxhall Ampera hybrid as in pre-covid times I could have done my daily commute on the 50 miles range from the battery charge overnight with only the occasional long distance journey needing to use the engine. However as its not as supported as it once was, still quite highly priced and still wasn't a patch on the Mondeo mk4 at that point I decided to go for the mk5.

    Rattles and water leaks, nightmare to find, time consuming and very frustating. My old mazda 6 rattles like false teeth in a Q to the antiques road show

    While you had the B pillar trim off did you notice anywhere there could be water ingress reason i ask i have mould on the seat belt same side as you were working on Just wondered, youre videos give me a confidence boost to tackle same jobs myself Thanks

    • @NigelEaland
      @NigelEaland  7 місяців тому +1

      There’s nothing except the bolts that hold the rear door on behind that trim. Is the mould on the seatbelt low down near the floor and is the carpet wet? Water could be getting in via the air conditioning. There’s a blower vent under the passenger seat. The cause is normally leaves and muck build up in the air intake tray in the engine compartment. Water doesn’t drain and overflows into the air intake which then gets blown out under the seat.
      If it’s not that then look at door seals.
