Yab, the key is "universal" and that includes the current far right political situation in the US, undermining democratic rights of people!

@@gs8099 You correctly chose an important and critical aspect of the statement to focus upon, assess, evaluate. analyze and develop a result.
Certainly You realize in Your developed result You added ideas, concepts and principle into the word "universal", correct?
The context of George Orwell, however, is using the adjective "universal" upon the noun deceit to describe the state of deceit.
Certainly it is true, that every government is restricting and limiting the "Inalienable" human rights within their laws, implementations and executions including the USA, where individuals are assured the highest of individual rights via the US Constitution and Amendments. Those rights have been expanded and reduced via various laws and court decisions or lack of them too.
Still, within the context of George Orwell, the adjective of "universal" upon "deceit" applies, and within the various governments, especially the politicians and many other organizations which have their agenda to change the structure of the government away from the Constitutional Republic to a more Socialist and Communist Society with greater controls and governance. They portray the benefits of change to be improvements. but is a deception. And the opposition also have some false portrayals misinformation, though mostly better, and yet still accepting more and more of the Socialist concepts [like a national healthcare system and healthcare as a "right".
Also, it is interesting, important perhaps critical to note George Orwell clearly shows and details what a mass governance world can become, with the use of technology which he already could see then. Certainly his novel "Animal Farm" is also an important satire. A fellow writer, H.G. Wells wrote his satire novels also regarding such subjects and concepts to be aware of.
Another important aspect is the connection of both of those men with The Globalist/Elite/NWO people [Mayer Rothschild, Rockefeller, et al] too.
      Sincerely,
Hopefully this will be thought provoking, meaningful, useful, and more..

@@newtonfirefly3584 Thank you. However, we have allowed mega rich & corporations along with strong religion beliefs hijack people's democracy by for example funding elections! They are practically in charge and control our legislatures, legal systems, etc! This makes absolutely no sense! Also I am afraid as long as we are sticking to this cheap and uncivilised notion of Black and White divide, we just cannot criticise any other nations without bringing about fundamental change to our thinking and our systems. It is 21st century, time to grasp the idea that we are all members of human race regardless and must sort this mess. It is too ugly! If we claim we are better we should bring about changes in many areas such as reducing the number of prisoners through effective training schemes. What is the point listening to these stories when we do know well that we don't have a perfect justice system?! I am afraid affordable access to health is absolutely essential, it is part of basic human needs. Listening to these stories only make me more aware of the faults in our systems and believe we shouldn't be complacent as that can lead us to more chaos!!

Obviously You have misconceptions about Socialist view, concepts, principles to claim G. O. was against or opposed to authoritarianism. What proof do You have to that basis?
      He promoted
Clearly though "1984" was a satire about an Totalitarian Government, He actually supported it, via his Socialist Agenda agreement.
He is quoted saying: "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.”
What he may have been projecting in his book, is the misuse aspects of an Authoritarian Government, as a Totalitarian Government, while he could still accept an Authoritarian Government, which can be implemented in other ways and means, conceptually which benefits humans and possibly figure the benefits of Society, as perceived, outweigh the infringement of individual rights or will adjust accordingly, if the people are given the means to affect it.
The obvious issues, are who will determine was is good for the people, measures, balance to determine the amount of Authoritarian Government that is beneficial and purposeful.
The current use of a presumed medical situation, danger, is being used with most Governments Worldwide, with more extensive authority measures within those Government which have more Authoritative Laws, Rules, and means.
These measure have been challenged within the USA, and judged by four Federal Judges, to violate the US Constitution within the 1st and 14th Amendments. Am hoping for the people to enact more suits against every Governor, as needed, including all Federal Governance, Rules, Laws, which clearly violate individual rights without any permission with any potential or existing disaster.

I think she brings up a good point, in that we tend to lose sight of the humanity of people living in these countries. It's easier to generalize, but are the actions a government takes truly representative of it's people? In the case of North Korea, they live under such oppressive conditions where they cannot criticize a single aspect of their own government without fear of reprisal, so there is zero accountability the officials are being held to except by the international community. Things are kept so under wraps that we really don't know the depths of abuse committed by them.

If you ever need a bigger clue that we are being lied to it's left and right wing. It doesn't matter it never has. We have the illusion of choice which is at best a duopoly, Pepsi or Coke, McDonalds or Burger King. So if we have ever had a free society how can so many people possibly be represented by two wings both controlled by one body? I don't know which is crueler, a tyranny that is exactly what it says it is or one that tries to convince everyone under it that they are free? There is no more complete prisoner than one who believes he is free.

I agree with you that she seemed guarded and even sympathetic towards her captors, trying to present them as human instead of the 'monsters' they had heard of in S. Korea. She seems protective of the N. Korean government, too, and tries to project Kim as 'young' as if he is immature or unexposed to the world instead of a savvy, calculating monster who murders his own people, starving them while he is a glutton. Sorry, but that is what I think about the dictator, who can't be good or kind until he repents of his evil against his own people. He murdered his uncle, killed his brother, and that does not depict a person who is naive or immature. So, I have to wonder if she was threatened about saying anything negative about their government with retaliation. That is what it makes me think is behind her guarded attitude. Thanks for listening. im confused why her english seems to have gotten worse rather than the opposite? Its been over 10 years since this incident, she should be expert status by now especially with her education background.
Kim Jong Il the leader at that time spoke with Bill Clinton directly and told him that he will release the 2 and that he is giving Bill a call personally because he said he never forgot that Clinton had reached out to him the very same morning when Kim Il Sung the father of KJI and leader at that time passed away when even their closest allies like China and Russia did not even make the call for any condolences. He said he never forgot that and that is why he personally wanted to give Bill a call on this one because he knew how much the release of these 2 meant to Bill. I thought that was kinda interesting. It sheds light on the human side that we dont really hear much about from that side.

@Just Me My cousin was a young just graduated and just married lawyer in Cuba when Castro people got in a building a few of them were together. To make a long and painful story short he was convicted to 15 years in prison, just for talking with colleagues and friends. Twice he tried to kill himself, his hair was very black but turned snow white in a year. Only his mother was permitted to visit. Because of" good behavior" he was released after 10 years. He NEVER talked about his time in prison. Being a brilliant and college educated man, many people tried to make him write a book, he not only refused, he would not talk about it, absolutely refused. He and his young bride( his son was born while he was in prison, being a newlywed), I think he for bit his wife to bring the boy to prison to meet him, after he was released they had a daughter. The family was granted permission to leave Cuba a few years after his release from prison.

Euna Lee certainly has my sympathy (along with her friend Laura), for the very unfortunate situation of their capture. How wonderful that they were united safely with their families. Yet it seems that your guest is quite reticent with her answers which could stem from a fear of any kind of retribution. Many reasons as well NOT take our freedoms for granted.

She didn't have ANYTHING (that I didn't already know) useful or helpful to say period..I bet the only reason why they're still alive is ONLY because they saw the third person get away and would obviously report back to China.. pr whoever speaks on behalf of them? Perhaps the American Consulte 🤔?
Idfk but NK obviously wanted a 🍪 or a fist bump.. obviously he's a good person🙄 I mean why else would he release his prisoners, UNHARMED?

Another tear jerker! Heavy! I appreciate Euna telling us her story. I understand this perspective of seeing the N. Korean people separate from the government and not having a picture of them in my head when I hear the name of the country. It's taking me years to wrap my mind around this where I live in Hawaii regarding the USA. For me it took someone I trust and respect greatly to SHOW me before I could really comprehend the political vs. legal vs. cultural values he lives by, given to him by his grandfather. Then I realized the picture in my head for them was incorrect.
I am trying to deprogram myself from the hateful board of education crap I received in the long hours I spent with them here in these Hawaiian Islands. Grateful for viewing many truthful videos coming out this year like this and academic doctors willing to debunk past written history.
Mahalo nui loa from Hilo, Hawaii island in the country in continuity called Ko Hawaii Pae Aina or Hawaiian Islands, H. I. If I didn't confirm our country's existence in 2015, I would NEVER be interested in this topic at all. I'm only now learning political views and systems and law and foreign relations and hearing the story from those who lived it makes all the difference now! 👍

She understands that sanctions make it much worse for the common people of North Korea. For a couple of months, China enforced sanctions in 2017. Not even first aid kits were allowed to enter North Korea because the metal needles and sensors were made of that is how strict they were. The main justification for sanctions is that it puts pressure on the common people to create civil unrest thereby forcing their government to do anything for the sanctions to be lifted but in the case of North Korea if the people didn't rebel in the 1990s they are unlikely going to rebel now people don't start revolutions on an empty stomach.

I wondered if she was still afraid of the north Koreans or if the US government asked her not to disguss certain things. It seemed like you kept trying to get her to talk and getting nowhere. Afterall she does know the power of film. Perhaps her book reveals more, but somehow I doubt it. The biggest story was that she was released. And I am sure she was grateful for that. When we are young such bravery seems like a grand adventure. Then when things go wrong we grow up fast. By the way she acted I'm surprised that she allowed the interview at all.

I I think this individual was trying to be diplomatic and her responses. I think in fact she did see humanity and some of the people that held her captive. Because these are the North Korean people and just because they are serving in military doesn’t mean that they are evil it’s what they’re supposed to do in that country because that’s what it is expected of them. I am glad that she saw humanity in them because that’s why we are so disturbed with how these people are treated. We learn from the defectors like Yeonmi The realities of growing up in that country and escaping from the country. This journalist is like the rest of us she sees it from the outside and because she didn’t grow up in it she didn’t leave it that way she’s seeing it from a different perspective. I do think she’s out there doing the work of the people caring about human rights and I know she is grateful for having been rescued and returned home. In her work I do believe she will continue to do the work of the people and for the rights other people. I am grateful that she was rescued as was her documentary partner. I think there’s so much more about their experiences that we will never truly know. Or not for a very long time. Thank you for showing this perspective as well…

It is hard for the American people to understand the concept of "no food", but I heard about Putin say if you rip all the feathers out of a chicken, that chicken will still follow you if you give it food, so the people of north korea, food is their only concern

Nothing in my openion was changed about Evil North Korean Regime. Her being careful about the North Korean Regime is because she has to. We don't know what kind of deal/promisses/agreement was made between Clinton and leader of North Korea! in order to get them released. So, I can't really critisize her for being discreet about North Korea, I believe that is the difference between her and the North Korean defector(Park). Park was so honest and brave because she didn't have that kind of obligation to be considerate/careful!!! beside the fact that she was from North Korea and she had lived the situation there. And to correct her about the U.S sanction on Iran; as an Iranian on behalf of like %85 of Iranian people I can say the people of Iran are %100 behind the sanction of Islamic Regime of Iran because we think that is the only way to weaken this kind of totaliter regimes and help people to fight against their dicator government (not like Obama boosting Iran's terrorist, oppressor regime with money and power)and I am pretty sure the North Korean people have the same thought and demand from U.S. and other countries too.
