Years ago I sat under the teaching of a young girl that taught us this teaching. How she knew all this is amazing. She was so young and we were all in our thirties at that time. With small kids. I have always been fascinated by Melchizedek. I always wondered, Did Jesus visit Abram why before his time on earth. He had no linage or no beginning or end. So many things point to this. But yet, some things are as though he lived on earth. I don't know. But when I find nuggets in the Bible that thrill me I know I should pay more attention to this story. These are the deep things of God that are exciting.
I couldn't sleep. I picked up my bible and opened it to the psalms, I have found peace in reading scriptures in times of mental tension. I have been led to a new understanding in this doctrine of the Prieshood. This was very impressive in my own mind and I was thinking that it's one of "The deep things of God. " And I am very grateful and excited about these Biblical accounts that are a Testament of who our Lord Jesus Christ is: I can see it more clearly than I was thinking in the past. Excited to be taught this night because it brought peace to my soul through the words we're blessed to have in the Scriptures. I am sure there will be more "exciting " truths to be discerned by all who seek to become true disciples of Christ.

But out of respect or reverence to the name of the Supreme Being, to avoid the too frequent repetition of His name, they,the church, in ancient days, called that priesthood after Mechizedec, or the Melchizedec Priesthood. The Bible says that Jesus is a high priest in the ORDER of Melchizedek, it doesn't say that he WAS Melchizedek. Hebrews 7:3 says that Melchizedek "resembled" the Son of God. Anyone read Dead Sea Scroll 11Q13 ? It talks about Melchizedek returning at the end of time to judge and deliver his people. Melchizedek is referred to as Elohim. It all sounds very much like the return of Christ.

My personal theory regarding the identity of Melchizedek is that (a) much like Enoch and Noah and the righteous man Job, he was a mortal Gentile who walked with God during a pre-Moses/pre-Law era, and (b) he was ordained directly by God to be a Priest-King in a similar manner by which David was later ordained to be king of Israel. Other scholars might try to disagree with this view by claiming that Melchizedek was not a mortal Gentile at all but was actually the Lord Jesus Himself in a pre-incarnate form. This view is based on Hebrews 7:3a which says that Melchizedek was “without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life.” However, this line is also easily interpreted to simply mean that there is no written account of the man’s birth, death, or family lineage. And aside from this line, the rest of the chapter refers to the two figures as if they are two separate people. In fact, verse 7:3b says that Melchizedek was “*made like* unto the Son of God” and does *not* say that he *was* the Son of God. Further, if Jesus and the priest-king Melchizedek were actually the same person, then, logically, Jesus should have been both a priest *and* a king after the Order of Melchizedek. However, Jesus only continued the *priesthood* of Melchizedek as per Psalm 110:4 and *not* the kingship, but rather instead inherited and continued the kingship of His Jewish ancestor David, thus making Him a Jewish King with a *Gentile* Priesthood. Seeing then how David and Melchizedek, both being Christ-figures, are technically equals in this regard, it does not make sense for Melchizedek to be a pre-incarnate version of Jesus unless the same can also be said of David. And since Jesus and David, for obvious reasons, could not possibly have been the same person, there are no real grounds for making such claims about Melchizedek.

He was a priest of 'El 'Elyon (translated as "the Most High God), 3. He was king of Salem, a Canaanite city belonging to the Jebusites (See Joshua 15:8). The name Melchizedek was traditional and common after the order of royalty in Canaan (among the Jebusites), as is seeing later. Besides Melchizedek himself, there is strong evidence that Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, also held the Melchizedek priesthood. That would indicated even others held it, and thus it was a priesthood "order". And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a BURNT OFFERING and SACRIFICES for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God." --Exodus 18:1,12 Was Jethro really a PRIEST? Did he really have authority from God to offer sacrifices? What priesthood did he hold? The Levitical Priesthood had not been set up yet. Why would Aaron and all the elders of Israel accept Jethro as a priest if he was not a priest of the true God? Melchizedek in Genesis 14:18 is called "the PRIEST of the most high God". Unless we have some reason to believe otherwise, surely Jethro, the PRIEST of Midian, held the same Priesthood that Melchizedek did earlier.

Melchizedek is the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ (i.e. a theophany) based on the the description of Melchizedek. He was a priest "forever". No parents were mentioned. Abram gave a tithe to Him. Years ago I sat under the teaching of a young girl that taught us this teaching. How she knew all this is amazing. She was so young and we were all in our thirties at that time. With small kids. I have always been fascinated by Melchizedek. I always wondered, Did Jesus visit Abram why before his time on earth. He had no linage or no beginning or end. So many things point to this. But yet, some things are as though he lived on earth. I don't know. But when I find nuggets in the Bible that thrill me I know I should pay more attention to this story. These are the deep things of God that are exciting.
I couldn't sleep. I picked up my bible and opened it to the psalms, I have found peace in reading scriptures in times of mental tension. I have been led to a new understanding in this doctrine of the Prieshood.

The Bible says that Jesus is a high priest in the ORDER of Melchizedek, it doesn't say that he WAS Melchizedek. Hebrews 7:3 says that Melchizedek "resembled" the Son of God. Anyone read Dead Sea Scroll 11Q13 ? It talks about Melchizedek returning at the end of time to judge and deliver his people. Melchizedek is referred to as Elohim. It all sounds very much like the return of Christ.

My personal theory regarding the identity of Melchizedek is that (a) much like Enoch and Noah and the righteous man Job, he was a mortal Gentile who walked with God during a pre-Moses/pre-Law era, and (b) he was ordained directly by God to be a Priest-King in a similar manner by which David was later ordained to be king of Israel.
Other scholars might try to disagree with this view by claiming that Melchizedek was not a mortal Gentile at all but was actually the Lord Jesus Himself in a pre-incarnate form. This view is based on Hebrews 7:3a which says that Melchizedek was “without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life.” However, this line is also easily interpreted to simply mean that there is no written account of the man’s birth, death, or family lineage. And aside from this line, the rest of the chapter refers to the two figures as if they are two separate people. In fact, verse 7:3b says that Melchizedek was “*made like* unto the Son of God” and does *not* say that he *was* the Son of God. Further, if Jesus and the priest-king Melchizedek were actually the same person, then, logically, Jesus should have been both a priest *and* a king after the Order of Melchizedek. However, Jesus only continued the *priesthood* of Melchizedek as per Psalm 110:4 and *not* the kingship, but rather instead inherited and continued the kingship of His Jewish ancestor David, thus making Him a Jewish King with a *Gentile* Priesthood. Seeing then how David and Melchizedek, both being Christ-figures, are technically equals in this regard, it does not make sense for Melchizedek to be a pre-incarnate version of Jesus unless the same can also be said of David. And since Jesus and David, for obvious reasons, could not possibly have been the same person, there are no real grounds for making such claims about Melchizedek.

Interesting, what if I tell you of a different version.... Well let's start with the obvious. 1. Melchizedek means king of righteousness (or just), 2. He was a priest of 'El 'Elyon (translated as "the Most High God), 3. He was king of Salem, a Canaanite city belonging to the Jebusites (See Joshua 15:8). The name Melchizedek was traditional and common after the order of royalty in Canaan (among the Jebusites), as is seeing later. In Joshua's days there was this Jebusite king by the name of Adonizedek king of Jerusalem (Joshua 10:1; Adonizedek means "lord of righteousness" or something related).
A very important detail is the context of the story, Abram was sojourning in Canaan, in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother to Eshcol and Aner, these were confederate with Abram (See Genesis 14:13). The God of Melchizedek was a Canaanite deity, 'El the compassionate (in Ugaritic writings). The name 'El had not been use before this story, he was introduced to Abram by Melchizedek (truth is he was very know and fully accepted since he was the patron god of the Ugaritic pantheon, Canaan). Abram knew of 'El, in fact, the Canaanite city Beth.'el was a city dedicated to the patron god 'El and literally meant "house of 'El", probable indicating that there was a literal temple dedicated to the deity in that city (that Jacob gave name to the city o Bethel is laughable).
Conclusion: Melchizedek is a normal Canaanite king, priest to 'El and resided in the Jebusite city of Salem (later becoming Jerusalem of the Jebusites then conquered by David later thus becoming of Israelite domain).
NOTES: 1. The names (or titles) used for God before the introduction of 'EL were 'Elohiym (Genesis 1), YHWH (Genesis 2:4), 'Elohey (Genesis 9:26). 2. After Genesis 14 the name 'El was equated with 'Elohiym, YHWH and 'Elohey (See 'El as 'Elohey in Genesis 31:29; See 'El as 'Elohiym in Genesis 35:1; YHWH as 'El in Genesis 17:1). 3. Oh, I almost forgot this: Not long ago, my Daughter and I attended a very large 'non-denominational' Church that possessed a large following in the Community of which they served. Well, the Senior Pastor was doing the Bible Study part and during that time said, with all apparent knowledge that he had learned, that 'secretly, Melchizedek was actually Jesus Christ! I was telling my Daughter, who at that time was a new believer "Honey, I must tell you that the information Pastor = = = said was quite wrong"; and explained to her the Truth. Unfortunately, the other several hundred members that were at that service were not so enlightened Thank you GDN for your truthfulness in 'spreading the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ'.!

In Hebrews 7:11 it uses the term "order of Melchizedek" in parallel with "order of Aaron" which sounds like both are Priesthood "orders".
Besides Melchizedek himself, there is strong evidence that Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, also held the Melchizedek priesthood. That would indicated even others held it, and thus it was a priesthood "order".
"When Jethro, ****the PRIEST**** of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt; .... And Jethro, Moses' father in law, took a BURNT OFFERING and SACRIFICES for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father in law before God." --Exodus 18:1,12
Was Jethro really a PRIEST? Did he really have authority from God to offer sacrifices? What priesthood did he hold? The Levitical Priesthood had not been set up yet. Why would Aaron and all the elders of Israel accept Jethro as a priest if he was not a priest of the true God?
Melchizedek in Genesis 14:18 is called "the PRIEST of the most high God". Unless we have some reason to believe otherwise, surely Jethro, the PRIEST of Midian, held the same Priesthood that Melchizedek did earlier.

Melchizedek is the pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ (i.e. a theophany) based on the the description of Melchizedek. He was a priest "forever". No parents were mentioned. Abram gave a tithe to Him. But my opinion is not cut in stone. I'm open to a better conclusion. Even my senior pastor disagrees with me.

They missed the mark and do not fully understand Melchizedek. Melchizedek is an office, not a person. The bible says that noah was the 8th. The one Abram met was Shem. Jesus took over as Melchezedek becomming both King and Preist when John the baptist (a levite) baptized Jesus, then Jesus who was of the line of Kings from Judah, became king and priest and the scripture states that as He is, so are we in the world being made in His likeness and in His image who also calls us kings and preists. All those who are born again under the blood of Jesus have now become Melchizedek and that is why the book of Hebrews also does away with the tithes because you have now become the storehouse of God. A 10th does not belong to God, it all belongs to God. We are just stewards over it.
