New details since publishing! Confirmed that Australia will launch this new Prado design with the 48-volt mild hybrid 2.8 diesel with 150kW/500Nm. Release date mid-2024. Hopefully we get the proper hybrid later…
Hey Tom, I expect that you can't answer this one but, if the current/outgoing 2.8 diesel develops circa 145kW alone, why does the new 48-volt mild hybrid 2.8 diesel only develop 150kW/500Nm? is this a typo? Am I missing something? I would have thought that the addition of a hybrid motor would only add to the HP output?
@@craigfism This isn't a "hybrid" in the Toyota sense, it's a mild hybrid -- badging it as a hybrid is more of a marketing term. This is why Toyota is rumoured to be calling this system -- on the Hilux at least -- a "Kinetic Assist System" in the future. The system cannot exclusively propel the car on electric power, unlike the hybrids in Camrys and such, in fact only acting as a generator for a battery which powers the car's systems.
Im happy that they sticking with 2.8, having a v6 anything in a prado is kinda stupid. Maintenance access is just crap with v6. I4 is definitely much better suited engine. Let the ranger and everest do that nonsense for their hype marketing.
Look, I can see that idea of round headlights might be liked by some, but I really think that this is a step back in time and an attempt to win the hearts of the FJ cruiser faithful in the US - God knows the yanks aren't the best at styling cues (remember the Ford Taurus?). The Prado, IMO, needs to appeal to two sectors; the young funky ppl (who probably can't afford $80k in the first place) and those in the 40+ age group, who are well on their way to owning their home and have the tastes that require a bit more refinement in a vehicle. I'm 55 and TBH, I will definitely miss the big chrome vertical grille that is synonymous with the badge. I do like the triple headlight design. However, the car does need a little more chrome for $80k plus... It seems manufacturers are upping the price but dropping the inclusions somewhat. Just thoughts
I think, it looks more like an FJ land cruiser than the prado, the Prado kind of went into the urban look over the years and this don't look like something you would see in the suburbs
I'm not sure the outgoing Prado looks especially suburb-friendly. Rounded, for sure, but it's still pretty massive in the inner city. If it's going to be massive, might as well make it look cool at the same time.
I shudder to think what the waiting time would be like after the release date. Also watching the ABD channel's walk around and I hope they don't change too much once it gets here. The retro base look is definitely nice. Wondering if they will stop any other models after this release...
Based on Toyota Australia’s belated press release today, my guess that at least one grade will get the retro styling looks right. The images Toyota Australia published show a very similar front end.
Thanks Tom great reveal. I called Toyota (Perth based) and current wait times for current Prado orders are minimum 24month wait.. So not sure if we'll be seeing these guys around anytime soon.
Toyota will have to start cancelling those orders soon - I highly doubt it will want to be delivering 2 generations of Prado at the one time in Australia. I think it’s more likely that Aussies at the back of the queue for the outgoing shape will be offered the chance to convert their order to the new gen.
@@chasingcars Yes correct Tom, I asked about this and the salesmen wasn't really sure if the current orders would automatically provide them the new gen or provide the current but one thing is for sure if that the wait times on the current are that long then I would think that would also apply to the new gen, hoping I'm wrong though these look quite good.
Finally, Toyota understands why the old J40 is so popular even though production ceased some 40 years ago and carried over the distinctive design features to the new Land Cruiser. So we have, for example, the rectangular grill with the text Toyota in the middle. The body has been made slimmer and lower, which are also design features carried over from the J40. This new Prado range looks more off-road styled. I don’t think this would appeal to the Mum’s anymore - and there are a lot of Mum’s who drive Prado’s.
Interesting to see the US journos walk through of the landcruiser. In the cargo area Toyota has left the cupholders and USB ports for the third row even though a third row is unavailable for it in the USA. Yep. Took me 18 months to get the current Prado. And we usually see the US being supplied more generously than Aus. They have Ioniq 5 sitting on their lots awaiting buyers whereas we go into a limited numbers queue and wait.
Our vehicles will be styled a little differently compared to the US vehicles. The US spec toyotas will be built there. The US will only be all petrol, & petrol hybrid. Australia will only be All diesel including a Diesel hybrid. A petrol hybrid is a remote possibility for Aust but i've been told its possibly not likely. There will be differences in Connectivity with some features available in the US unlikely to be available in Australia. Mainly an updated version of the Toyota Connect system with remote start, digital key, SOS, OTA updates for diagnostics , mapping etc . Australia may not see all of the features of the US vehicles .

A 4cyl will always be inferior to a 6 and 8. This is just Toyotas way of cutting costs and developing their cheapening out. It also looks cheap, really cheap. It’s a far cry from the LC300. Even the 4Runner looks better and more expensive. Attracting younger buyers?? How many young aussies aged 30-35 can afford an 80-100k dollar car? Interesting..

I do like the looks. Retro Defender vibe. The engines are a disappointment in that the diesel is a carry over. I guess no stepping on big brother’s 300 toes then, at least engine wise.
Shame Toyota Australia couldn’t at least lock in the turbo petrol hybrid for launch.
I would personally like it better if they don’t call it a Prado.
Looks like an extended FJ cruiser.
Looks like a Discovery slept with a 1999 Pajero
Give me a real Hybrid........
Please, let us say NA-spec model or specification for North America. Or NAS Land Cruiser. That's because North America or Anglo-America also includes Canada. Professional journalists use term North America: it's just more correct. There are identical specs for vehicles for Canada and America markets in 90% of cases.
I'm quite happy with using US and America/American interchangeably here; it's entirely obvious what was meant.
Did Toyota just kidnap industrial designers from the Range rover Defender and rebadge it?
This is the new prado, most fools are thinking this the new land cruiser 300/200 series 😅
Huh!? Definitely the Prado
I haven't seen anyone think this is the new 200/300 series 🤔
Oficially it is called LC 250
@@bencodykirk most Americans think it's the replacement of the lc 300 series but actually its the Prado, named l Cruiser 250
FJ cruiser lookalike.
I think that’s kind of the point though
@@chasingcars Strange how retro looks modern and the "modern" shape of the current model looks old.
All you mentioned was "retro style"
No decent engine options.
This will be $90k plus
At the top end, yes I agree
150kw:500nm four pot in a car this big and heavy in 2023 is a joke
I was hoping for more
I prefer the old design, but is this new Prada built in the lexus plant in Japan. ? You just lose interest when it's not built in Japan. It just defeats the purpose of it being Japanese when it not honestly. ?
I don't think Toyota has said so yet
can't belive it..........2024?.............really?
Yep
Is it just me but does this car look old already just after a few days!
What’s with the use of the words: ‘honest’ and ‘risky’ sounds stupid. Editor!
Built Gas paddle touch the carpet please not to make leg so tired
I am confused.
Well, the phrase I used was ‘slightly younger’ meaning middle aged. I didn’t say anything about 30-35 year olds. But to your point - plenty of people that age are indeed spending nearly $100K on cars, especially top end utes…
@@chasingcars cool!
@@BeardedBavarianBiker on utes and Ute based vehicles like the Fortuner, yes. Not a Land Cruiser or the Prado.
@@BeardedBavarianBiker and even still 4 cylinders will always be inferior to a 6 and an 8 because of the lack of smoothness and refinement on the engine.
if it aint towing 3.5 tonne forget it!
The diesel will have 3500kg towing we believe
Thanks for the info it looks terrible to me
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
That bad?
It was my dream car for 6 years until now 😑🔫
And then I thought maybe the 70 series and they changed that and it looks horrible with the darker headlights. so I don’t no what to want now😒
No, tell us how you REALLY feel. 😂
?
No sign of that terrible piano black thank god
Is it only me or that is not TRUE land cruiser? It looks far too small to me. Especially compared to 4runner.
What is a true Land Cruiser?
There are a bunch of Landcruisers.
300, 70-series, Prados.
Personally, I feel that a "true" Land Cruiser is a vehicle that the Toyota Motor Company has put a little plastic badge on it that says "Land Cruiser". How funny would it be if they put one on a RAV4? "Land Cruiser Jr." maybe? 😂
No hybrid? No thank you
It’s a shame it won’t be available from launch. Hoping it gets added soon after…
Why city dwellers and mall crawlers buy such old school SUVs? They dont drive as good and have horrible sound insulations. I happened to drive fortuner once, how bad and stuff the suspension is !
Just buy a used GLE or an x5?
Because of either a genuine or perceived need for its durability and capability
GET RID OFTHE ELECTRICAL MOTOR U LOST A CERTAIN SALE
I really don't like the look aye
Opinion seems to be split 50/50 on this
2700kg towing hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Looks ugly...Toyota seem to have taken their design from new Land rover. I'm not buying one that's for sure.
They ruined it
That looks disgusting 😂
That’s a bit strong surely
Disgusting? Really? Retro-styling isn't for everyone (I'm not generally a fan) but I think this is styled pretty well. I do prefer the rectangular headlights though (never been a round headlight fan).
Mmm I would be interested in the 260kw or there abouts with 600nm torque. I hope Toyota dose to do the usual: Restrict it way down to 150kw! I won't even visit a showroom if that is the case.
Not big of a fan of this new design change.
