Learn the moveable guitar riffs used by ZZ Top, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and more

- In this video you'll learn several different ways of using two barres as the basis for riffs. Closeup video from player viewpoint uses examples from these songs:
ZZ Top: I Thank You
Boston: Smokin'
Rod Stewart/Ronnie Wood: (I Know) I'm Losing You
Alice Cooper: School's Out
James Gang/Joe Walsh: Funk #49
AC/DC: Have A Drink On Me
I also have a short segment on the correct way to play those classic Santana chord changes used in "Evil Ways", "Oye Como Va", etc. I used to play them wrong (using some of the shapes shown in this video), but while making this video I finally realized how to play those changes the way Carlos does.
The riff shapes shown in this video are some of the many chord, riff and lick shapes you can find in my free web app "The Building Blocks Of Rock", available here:
guitarviz.com/bbr.html
It's just a web page, all you have to do is open it. Nothing to download, and you don't need to sign up for anything.
Please leave any comments or questions. I do read them all!
cheers, Kevin
0:00 intro
0:18 what's in this video
1:21 how to play it
1:51 I Thank You
5:11 Smokin'
5:54 option: add the thumb
6:19 Santana chord shapes
8:05 I'm Losing You
9:16 School's Out
10:39 option: add hammer-on/Funk #49
12:06 Have A Drink On Me
13:17 other examples
This video was a bit more rushed than my other ones, and a couple things slipped by me, sorry:
1. the volume level on my voice is too low during the closeup view of guitar neck
2. I wasn't clear about where on the neck some of these examples are played. The root (the red circle) is on the sixth string, same as a basic "E" shape barre chord. Here is the root location for each example:
I Thank You: A (5th fret)
Smokin': same
I'm Losing You: D (10th fret)
School's Out: E (12th fret)
Funk #49: A (5th fret)
Have A Drink On Me: A (5th fret)
The fingering in the diagrams is relative to the root. So the first barre is at the same fret as the root, the second barre is two frets higher. You can also see these examples in the app, at guitarviz.com.
Dude, you're growing because this is EXACTLY what people need to learn how to play. What you teach is stuff i already know, but i always like and comment because young new guitar players need to find you. Glad they are, and glad we can help you reach even more people with likes, subscriptions and comments stimulating the algorithm.
Right on. A good idea is a good idea.
💯 agree
I gotta tell you this channel is the most fun for learning guitar. It’s so much more interesting than just noodling up and down caged shapes, I’m actually learning fun stuff to do within those shapes and it really shows when I’m trying to improvise or write stuff, I already have so many new tricks in my arsenal I can fall back to from the videos you’ve made and know it’ll continue to grow along with your channel.
Keep up the great work! We’re all rooting for you!
Thanks!
20,000??? You'll hit 2,000,000 in no time, your tutorials are so good, you are a great player and teacher.
no doubt your one of better teachers on youtube with your slowed down approach, explaining technique, and accuracy of riff. thanks brother
These are the best guitar videos Ive ever seen.
Wow, honey! 20k in two months! Your hard work is paying off. A big hug to you for your accomplishment.😘
😘❤️
0 to 20k in 8 weeks!!!!!!! Must have the golden content. I've been grinding at it for 9 years for 1.5k. I'm nearing an outlay of $40k in my costs to provide guitar fixing and modding content. $0 income from you tube. I'm one of the 20k subs. Congrats
I’m one of your subscribers !
Thanks! I got lucky, found a niche. Best of luck, hang in there!
I'm picking up a guitar again after 30 years or so. Keep this up. Very inspiring knowledge you're sharing. Keep it up!
Thank you for useful fun lessons.
Tools you can actually use. Examples that are musical and people can use right away for making music.
There's so many guitar teachers who spend the first 10 minutes talking about DENSE, obscure, convoluted theory, without offering anything of use or value or application.
Thank you for cutting through the noise! 🙏🔥🔥🔥
20k is well deserved! Congratulations 🎉
Hey Man you rock with this channel you have just popped up in the last few days I have watched loads of "guitar tutorial videos " and soon get bored with all the mixolodian /pentatonic stuff but yours is the one that makes me actually want to get the old Les out and learn some new stuff, could of done with your tutoring 3 of 4 decades ago but as they say never to late and practice practice practice!!! keep up the good work
I am loving your videos!!! How these common shapes/cords are found across so many songs with simple pull off hammer on “tweaks” that add the secret sauce. Your depth of knowledge is incredible!
Another great video. You built exactly what guitar theory has needed this whole time. Thank you so much
Great as always! I prefer a long well explained lesson then a short one with lots of questions left. Thank you!
As always, thanks for your thoughtful lessons and explanations. Have a great vacation.
You’re a great and selfless teacher!
Great channel. I think this is exactly what I need to break out of scales and learning from tabs. The web tool is amazing as well.
Please share this so all guitar players can find these videos and the amazing online resource that this gentleman has put together! Very helpful for growing and hearing these riffs in iconic songs.
ZZ TOP, Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings is a good example. I love that song.
Love the view from the players perspective! Makes it so much easier to see what you’re doing. Many times I have to pause and zoom in because in other videos it’s hard to see what fingers are fretting and what fingers are hovering. Enjoyed the lesson, Funk #49 is a song I want to learn. Subbed! Keep it up! Thanks!
New fan right here 🙋🏻. I love your unique and very effective approach to lessons. I started using your app recently and just want to thank you for making that free to the public.
You came swinging right out of the gate. The quality of your first video is so high that when I saw it I thought "what an awesome channel. I can't wait to watch the backlog of videos I missed." (After subscribing immediately, of course). Because nobody starts out that good, so clearly you'd been making videos for a long time, right? Sure fooled me.
Either way I can't get enough of this content. The song choices, the camera angles, the level of explanation of the concepts, I can't speak for others but for where I'm at it's the perfect kind of instruction.
The best guitar tutorial on UA-cam. 21000 subs is just the start I think.
The first riff sounds like Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. That’s pretty heavy stuff. Worth a like and subscribe.
Yo man . Seriously. All seriousness. You have my absolute appreciation for the approach you have especially from player perspective. It absolutely helps. I'm a visual and cognitive learner, so seeing that perspective and playing along absolutely helps in so many ways where other musicians either put up the tabs, which is fine, but it doesn't show the positions very well. So thank you. I have subscribed and look forward to going through your catalog of videos and new ones.
Definitely 👍🏻 doing something right … the camera view is great and most of all like Keith Richards says “ it’s what you play”
Video x2 and tab, with out good explanations, stellar playing. 👌
Love the videos! I like the players view that you use when showing the riffs! Your examples have filled some gaps in my playing ,thanks! Congrats on the 20.1K subs!
Great video, he’s a born teacher…
love the player perspective!
These videos are amazing…Thank You!
Great videos! Very informative and helpful
0:18 My friend, you deserve this and much more!
Thanks for the awesome content. Keep rockin! 🤘🐶🎸
I love these because they are very detailed, i hate these because i just dropped my guitar for today and it just came out, my fingertips are on fire but i want m o r e
Wow, this is gold 🥇, I never seen this man before but I just subscribed to this ,ile be hanging around here a wee while
Great content, well done. I've got a good foundation as a player, but this will help me continue to improve. Thanks!!
Thank you for ANOTHER!!!! Super Great Lesson!!!! :)
Thank you brother you rock! You made me a better guitarist.
Many thx. Have a great holiday.😊
Thx . Appreciated . Liked and subscribed ❤.
Shot in the dark by AC/DC is also a good example.
Great lessons, congrats on 20k
Yes! Good catch
Love this channel. I’m working on my 3rd “Wolves of Exile” album. This is proving very helpful. Watched a clip on a moveable chord 2 weeks ago and the track birthed from playing with that is a ripper.
Thanks! Looking with interest at your videos on motorcycle rides in Australia. We spent a month there last October, even got out to WA (but not the interior).
you will have 20,000 more views in no time
Enjoy your break!
Great channel!!!! Give you ideas have ro build your own riffs taking riff positions
I think I subbed the first one I saw.
I like it
Thanks….subscribed! Is your guitar on of the newer Gibson 61 Reissues?
I don't think so, I bought it used about 10 years ago.
Thank you for this ! Is there a way you can think of , that I could mirror the screen , being that I'm a lefty ?
yes, one of the things I'm going to include in future versions / phone app. Don't hold your breath, but hope to have that in sometime this year!
@@theBuildingBlocksOfRock I'm looking forward to that ! Thank you.........I'll stick around.
Please vol up your voice dbs or gain, it's very low compared to the guitar
I'll +1 this! yeah, too low in closeup view. Thanks
Sounds OK with headphones 🎧 👌
@@theBuildingBlocksOfRock your voice doesn’t have the punch of the great guitar sounds, head phones drive my tinnitus up the wall. Children use hearing protection.
The reason why your viewership is increasing is because nobody is teaching this online. And the free app is amazing. The creative arts are very competitive, and people do not support each other usually. The exact opposite of what the average worker thinks it is I was talking to a friend of mine and I said a guitar is not a drum you don’t pick the thing up and just wiggle your fingers and make music. Nor is it a gift from God. I told him it was like algebra. And you’re right most of the time they’re talking about obscure chords and scales. They don’t tell you what to do in between the notes
Are you the 'Guitarist View'?
Anybody have a clue what fret any of this stuff is on?? Can’t see the guitar neck or any fret numbers on the pictures. 😢😢😢
hi there, just added a comment and pinned it. HTH
If you won't set up a channel membership, can I at least send you a book to add to your shelf? It's Steve Gorman's "Hard to Handle."
channel memberships may be coming soon :) I'll check that book out, why do you like it?
@@theBuildingBlocksOfRock The Black Crowes were probably the band I listened to the most around the time of Southern Harmony. I always wondered what happened, and Steve tells a pretty good story from his perspective. I just thought it would be a good addition to your rock reading shelf :)
I've got some bad news my friend.. You are going to get so many more subscribers.. I've been playing a while and learn something new every video from watching you.. Your dual screen approach and mapping to songs is going to be copied by so many other people..
that's why I say ZZ top isn't a 3 piece band
People want to learn it, but the camera work and graphics have to improve. It’s too difficult to guess where your fingers are and also know what notes.
He literally can't make it any more obvious.😂
Boring
Talk to much
Have a great vacation buddy 🗻🏕🏖 wherever you may be. 😉
