There's no use using logic. It's just a culture of bitterness and envy. Disney is foolish to respond to it just like everyone else that does is. I thought we were getting passed it. Hopefully this is towards the end
Yep, "tiki culture" is 100% American. It was hardly ever based in legitimate Polynesian culture anyway, more an idealized mid-century aesthetic creation. No actual Polynesian person I've met is angered by this stuff, because it's all in good fun.
If Disney's worried about cultural appropriation I don't really understand why they don't just hire a Polynesian artist to design the merchandise..? A lot more productive than just kinda sitting there and not releasing the merch they create
Exactly! Instead of not having any diversity at all, get people from the cultures to design that merch! It would make it more cool and authentic anyways!
Yeah ... that's not how cultural appropriation works, you can't simply hire "one of them" to do the design and then you're in the clear to sell millions of cheaply manufacturer items sold at a massive profit margin. It's still cultural appropriation.

He knew what to do... glad we got the complete story on this, and it didn't turn out to be another nut job just jumping in the river for clicks. I won't say as much for the CM who should have been a lot more accomodating, especially to a guest with a service animal. Tiki room id shocking not for being racist, but for being so 60s. Its a weird time capsule. Its weird stuff like this that makes disneyland interesting.
Independent companies have been making tiki mugs "inspired by" so many Disney attractions in the last few years it's gotten ridiculous. As for Disney's current era of Cancel Culture, I agree with former Imagineer X Atencio, "The show's called Pirates of the Caribbean, not Boy Scouts of the Caribbean." There's a big difference between cultural sensitivity and trying to rewrite history.
I totally agree. And that is why Universal is eating Disney’s lunch right now. They are all about entertaining their guest and giving them what they want. If it’s offends 1 person out of 1,000 that aren’t going to care.
WDW News. Tom, Have you noticed that the new Animatronic of Tiana does the exact same body movements as "Elsa" in the "Frozen" attraction at Hong Kong Disneyland. When we see her why does she have to be dressed like a female "Indianna Jones?" Cheers, Chris Perry.
……SHAG can do whatever he wants!! Disney was LUCKY to have him!! He doesn’t need Disney!! His Palm Springs, and Las Vegas galleries are ALWAYS packed!!!
@@ttintagel the problem is what this bodes for the Enchanted Tiki Room, Trader Sam's, and Disney's position as a leader in the Tiki scene. A lot of people (myself included) discovered Tiki in general and Shag specifically through Disney, but if it comes down to it, we're going to side with Tiki and Shag over the current iteration of Disney. They act like they can slap our hands and be our little Jiminy Cricket telling us right from wrong, but the result is alienating their own customer base. And because Disney's product are the feelings and parasocial relationship you develop with them, alienating their customers feels like a BETRAYAL.
@@michaelsullivan3581 …….the man is a millionaire MANY times over. He’s tired of being told what to do by a huge corporation like Disney. Good for him….it’s DISNEY’S loss.
In regards to the Shag situation. He most probably got approval from Disney to create that mug. Even though they are not allowed to say, the company Tiki Farm produces all of the mugs At Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto and Club 33. My guess is Tiki Farm was also commissioned to produce this mug as well.
Ironically, it was Disney that introduced me to Tiki and to Shag's art. My kitchen is otherwise decorated in framed, predominantly Disney, Shag postcards. In the scene, Shag is bigger than Disney now, so if Disney really wants to alienate another customer base... well... be my guest, I guess 🤷
The raft situation reminds me of experiences I've had in the Haunted Mansion. Because of my low vision, the dark area between the stretching room and the load area is a nightmare for me. It's not safe; several times I've been run into and knocked over by the people milling around, because I can't see them coming toward me in the pitch dark. And yet, half the time when I explain this to the CMs and ask if I can bypass the stretching room, they refuse. The last time I asked, the CM said, "If it's not safe for you, that's your responsibility, not ours." It sounds like the CM on the raft who wouldn't let Storm sit down felt the same way.
but but- safety SHOULD be their responsibility, you're the GUEST... present day CM's and Disney culture is one of 'not my problem, not getting involved any more than i have to'.. there was a point in time Disney listened to the guest, and actively wanted to help them and make them feel comfortable and give them the best possible experience.
I’m glad shag is still making the mugs. The people that love the tiki room would love to buy these mugs. They look great so if Disney is too sensitive to sell them someone else should.
Those who have a problem with the Tiki Room, Splash Mountain, etc should stay home and keep their mouths shut. That includes those employed by Disney , who should quit their jobs and go work somewhere else where they won't be offended. I suggest Russia, China or India..........the further away the better.
Disney: We will do everything to stop cultural appropriation. Also Disney: Cancels long running Spirit of Aloha show for DVC that only the super rich can afford.
Disney should focus on accessibility features in their attractions before removing ladies and gentleman from spiels and getting rid of things for cultural appropriation
Shag has an artist has the right to share is art. remember the stolen drumming tiki sculpt from a digital sculpter stolen for a statue. And now there worried about cultural appropriation. Maybe make sure your people don't steal art in the first place.
You’re spot on about the few changes Disney need to do to help elderly & the disabled. I’ve been going on about the ‘people mover’ for ages. There is so much space for an elevator and access for a wheelchair user. I’m sure one of the vehicles could easily be adapted to accommodate a wheelchair. However one main thing Disney is lacking, is a decent restroom. Sure they have companion restrooms & stalls for wheelchair users. However these are mainly for people with upper body movement. They need at least one ‘changing places’ restroom in each park, which has an adult size changing bench & a hoist. So many families have to change their disabled relatives on floors on the restrooms. It’s just not on in this modern world. There has been so many petitions and people requesting this need. I’ve asked myself a few times and just been ignored. I’m always directed to the first aid but it’s unsuitable. I’m not sure why but Disney seems to be ignoring these requests. This has been going on for years 🤷♀️
Cultural Appropriation? So, artists aren't free to be inspired by things they see in the world around them? You know, "Steal like an artist". This is how it's always been. People are always being inspired by what they see others doing. Besides, SHAG wasn't copying Polynesian art with this mug, he was copying a 1960s Hollywood interpretation of Polynesian art. Disney is overreacting on this one, like it is with a lot of things lately.
@@bobothefool3037 Yes, I know. My point is all artists do it everywhere, always have. History of the world. Someone always inspires someone else. Disney shouldn't ruin its relationship with SHAG over this. Put the mug out!
@@bobothefool3037 Cultural appropriation takes place when members of a majority group adopt cultural elements of a minority group in an exploitative, disrespectful, or stereotypical way.
it's actually just made up nonsense with arbitrary barriers solely applied in situations of bitterness and envy. If you're capable of thinking and abstraction then anything in the English language not made by someone descended from the creators of English is appropriated since english is a style of sounds much like art genres are visual styles. Obviously this is stupid. No use using logic against people that buy into it though. Just have to wait them out like children having temper tantrums
That fall in the river is an absolute ADA nightmare, from the absence of seating or benches, to the cast member outright denying his needs, they should be glad this man is kind enough not to sue
But on the other hand…. What happened to taking responsibility for yourself? If your disability makes you unstable, etc. why the hell would you go on a raft? That’s like someone who is prone to motion sickness going on the Teacups or one of the coasters at Disneyland. Come on! Why is it that so many adult people now feel that need taking care of? And why is that for decades at Disney parks we all did fine before we had every load area to an attraction surrounded by guard rails, gates, etc? Why…Because parent’s watched their kids, and adult’s took care of themselves and didn’t expect everyplace they went to take caste of them in their every step! Gee we American’s have gotten fragile!
They decided to go into the river when they weren’t given their usual special treatment. Nothing was unsafe, and notice how no one else has had any issue with the Tom Sawyer rafts safety bars until today.
The lake has no current it is not that deep but it is a hazard due to the tracks for the riverboat. I am a cm for disney and I believe that the lake is only 5-12 ft deep
@@tjtennisicmroll2k Yes, even though it’s called a “river” there is no real current. We are at Disneyland every week, and years ago I worked as a CM there. The river has no current!
I know Josh and I got to know Rolly and that mug is not a Disney reproduction of anything in Disney. Tiki culture is an American-originated art, music, and entertainment movement inspired by Polynesian, Melanesian, and Micronesian cultures. It is a celebration of the Tiki Scene that began when soldiers came home from the South Pacific theater. This is ridiculous of Disney to do this.
Does anyone know why they chose not to tell the original story of Princess and the Frog? I love the movie and would have loved to go through the story.
I have noticed you (Tom) more upbeat since your announcement that WDWNT & Disney have made amends. I have also noticed that you’re still honest in your reviews but your delivery of criticism is softer than before. I have also noticed that you give credit to Disney where credit is due - just like you always have. 💙
I mean, part of that is probably several changes in my personal life. I’ve been in a bad place for a long time, starting to come out of that the last few months.
Tiana's Bayou Adventure looks *terrible* from the outside. Not only the giant bush, but the Georgian style barn entrance does not fit the setting the ride supposedly takes place in. The artwork on the barn does not fit the time or place either, making it that much worse. The French Quarter style walkways they put in totally clash with the old barn setup that they clearly didn't have the budget to change... I'm happy that the animatronics are looking good, but we'll have to see how well placed they are, because there will be much more empty space relying on projections in this long ride.
Items inspired by Disney and Disney parks are everywhere. I see this as no different than Santa Gertie plush. I also think part of this conversation is determined by the contract that was made between him and Disney, but none of us know what’s in there. There’s always risk involved with contract design work on both sides.
Love the news updates. I'm a little confused by your admonishment of Shag for producing Tiki Room inspired mugs right before advertising your Gurnee inspired plushie. I don't see how they are different. Same with the EPCOT inspired shirt. Either way, I love the show. Keep up the good work.
Gertie's public domain (1914). And their other designs would full under fair use - parody (fonts aren't copyrightable). Though it is a valid criticism on if they're crossing that line on a lot of their designs.
@@WDWNT if you change it enough you can. King Kong is public domain, but if you want to do a Kong with a yellow machine fist and a big axe and a # of scratches across his chest, God bless you in your legal fight with Warner Bros. and Legendary. Your Gertie plush is clearly based on the version in DHS, just like Shag's mug is clearly inspired by the poles in the Tiki Room, which makes your criticism of Shag a little clownshoes. Even if you get off on a technicality about Gertie being public domain, that's not fooling anyone into believing that you just coincidentally happen to be a huge fan of Winsor McCay.
From what I remember, Rolly Crump basically invented the representations of the 'tiki gods' in the attraction based on a couple of books from the library and a whole lot of 'Rolliness', because the task got dropped in his lap on a short timeline. They aren't even close to accurate and that's basically on purpose.
Shag has an established relationship with Disney. He may have made that design on Disney’s dime. Even if he didn’t, doing what he did was going against Disney’s wishes; they didn’t want the mug released. He knew that and went around them anyway. Even if he didn’t do anything illegal, Disney can still be upset, which could threaten their relationship. It’s not just about legal vs. illegal.
While I agree the "Tianamatronic" looks better than the last generation of animatronics with far more limited motion and projected faces, it looks absolutely nothing like the Tiana we know from The Princess and the Frog! It is clearly a clone of Belle from the Tokyo attraction, just with a different skin and wig. The real Tiana has a completely different facial structure. It's sad that even when Imagineering is allowed to do something special for the US parks, they can't go 100% and make a custom animatronic for Tiana. 😢
So glad to hear the kind words about the Tiana animatronic!!! I know the Imagineer who designed her and I am sure you have filled their's and all of the Imagineers hearts that worked on Tiana and all of the figures!!!!
Tom can't win. When he is mad/disappointed the audience tells him to stop complaining and be positive. When he is positive they say he is being paid off by Disney. Y'all are wild.
As a Native Hawaiian and Polynesian, I’m not offended LOL it’s an artist rendition of a tiki and it’s a mug…. Whatever dance Moana was doing before on the Magic Happens Parade at Disneyland that was a what I felt a mockery of Hula, which is sacred to our culture, that was a bit annoying, but of course at the end of the day laughable. It’s a mug, it’s not that big of a deal 😅 people are so soft now days. 🤷🏻♂️ I would never buy the mug because it’s not my thing but really? Come on.
I really hope tianas turns out good. I am very sad splash is gone but that can’t affect my opinion on the new attraction. I hope it doesn’t turn out how runaway railway did. I have high hopes. *knock on wood* let them cook🔥
If disney tries to kill Walt's legacy, then all of us the fans, will be gone forever, they ruined the entertainment world with woke stuff and now killing the parks? Definitely disney is dead.
More canceling and “wokeness” by Disney. I am sure there was never any backlash about this at all. Tiki’s by their nature are caricatures of gods or superstitions or ancient stories. Not to mention all kinds of tiki merchandise is sold in Hawaii and beyond, with many Hawaiian artists and craftspeople making very nice (and expensive) tikis to sell. SHAG has long made numerous Disney inspired shirts and other merchandise (of which I have many) that was inspired by the Tiki Room. (And BTW, these are licensed so SHAG or RSVTS or Loungfly can have whomever make these things as long as the quality is there.). This is why Universal is going gangbusters right now - They care about line thing: Bringing entertainment and fun to their guests and not worrying that is may offend .05% of overly sensitive people! I hope SHAG takes his designs over to Universal and starts working with them!
My favorite part about criticizing Shag for selling something based on Disney IP is that it comes RIGHT before pushing the Gertie the Dinosaur IP and the Park Candy commercial. Hilarious.
Hopefully Tiana opens before or after late September so when i go there isn’t high crowds for the new ride or it at least gets a 4 hr wait that drops the other wait times around the other parks
Damn we were just there last week and came home on the 10th…I have NEVER seen Shang and also missed Vanelope in EPCOT…it is so hard to find new characters these days and he would have been an AWESOME addition to my collection 20+ years in the making
Tom don’t worry about the sell out comments. It’s great you’re back on the media list. If anything that’s a sign things *are* improving. You’re allowed to like the new animatronics. Tiana is way more refined that the Little Mermaid ride ones were (oh the whip cream hair…). Your coverage has always been fair in my eyes and continues to be. Part of being fair is praising the good stuff! Hope to see more
Good show Tom. I feel like you do every time I go to Hollywood Studios. So sad The Great Movie Ride is gone. Thanks for reporting that the gentleman that fell into the water wasn't just another goofball looking for his 15 minutes of fame. There is enough of that going around!
I agree with your point that it is a great animatronic very smooth interested to see how it will integrate into the ride. But the most important thing you said in your monologue was showing the USA park some love specifically Disneyland, California. The tomorrowland in Disneyland, California, for at least the last 30 years has been in a state of total Lackluster disarray. I grew up going to this Disneyland park. I am of the generation that I remember the country bear jamboree. I remember riding America sings two and three times when I would visit the park. I remember natures Wonderland I remember the mile long bar I remember when they put the snowman in the Matterhorn I rode the skyway from fantasyland to tomorrowland. I remember the original submarine voyage. I was a frequent writer of adventure through inter space, and the people mover. And my point is just that the people mover the track has been laying there dormant for over 30 years and has just neglected it. You can build Newlands you can build new theme parks other countries you can re-skin/redirect other classic rides, but you cannot fix the infrastructure to a beloved family attraction like the people mover. Whatever it would cost to bring that ride up to current code and safety guidelines, cannot possibly cost nearly as much as it would be to build another land or to expand or to dismantle and one of the most popular attractions in the park. Disney has to fix the people mover and Land if this were done, you would see generations of Parkers return to experience that ride again. I’m quite sure if they put that on a survey of what rides they would like to see repaired/brought back to Disneyland that would be the first. Disney needs to get off of his Geo political stand. It’s taking and these foolish foolish ideas and stick with what works. The design of the original people was genius and the way it interacted with the synergy of the tomorrowland side of the park. It’s integration with the kinetic energy of , the monorail and the Rockets when they were still on top of the people mover central hub. Gave you a certain aesthetic and f seal to that park. It is now becoming eyesore with this track laid out running throughout the entire part of tomorrow, Land and no explanations. And I constantly hear younger kids wondering what ride this is and when is it going to come online so they can ride it. It is a source of constant debate amongst a lot of Disney heads and groups here in Southern California and it’s one of the things that keeps Disneyland feeling a bit more special than every other Disney park because it’s the original. And some of us feel that Disney should keep original ideas in the original park. Unless Disney is going to make another theme park, titled Disney Classics with nothing but old attractions they need to fix the people mover. That’s all I needed to rant about. I enjoy your channel very much.
19:29 ❓Not sure how anyone is able to cheat the ticket system at WDW when fingerprint id authenticates the ticket? Maybe other parks have issues with that?
It has something to do with reselling. I guess in Florida there was a way to buy bulk tickets for corporate events at a discount and then resell them for profit. Disney is using blockchain tech to try and stop the ability to reassign those tickets.
I think the big head looks like it should be the animatronic for Pixar design style and doesn’t fit the movie. I’d agree they are aiming for a June opening because that’s start of peak season but the progress I saw in late January at WDW didn’t make that believable, to much masonry still required.
I don't want to be that guy, because I really love your guys content. But you were saying the guy who made the tiki mugs shouldn't sell them because they are based off designs from Disney, but then you immediately plug the stuffed dinosaurs you're selling based off designs from Disney. Isn't that a little hypocritical? Again big fan, but I thought it was a little weird
I was just at MK and Tiana's looks great. I've been going to both American parks all my life and I'm excited to see the change. I own Song of The South on VHS and while it has charm and some insight into a flawed era, it is by no means an appropriate representation of current times or theming.

I'm wondering if Disney will use a Virtual Queue for TBA when it first opens as I imagine demand for it will be high, which will lead to high wait times. If they do a VQ, I'm hoping that means they get rid of the Cosmic Rewind VQ. I can't imagine Disney wants to manage 3 VQs at the same time. It's time for CR to get rid of it's VQ. I know about the issue they are having of where do you have the people wait, but when you spend half a billion dollars on a ride, you should be able to figure out what to do when it's popular and people want to ride it.
As a follow up from my previous post. Disney is in serious trouble with this epic universe happening with universal. Universal Studios in Hollywood California is currently building new coasters and bringing new excitement to their park. Wow, Disneyland remain stagnant at this time. Disney World, Florida is currently going to be looking over its shoulder because the epic universe seems to be a top level top-tier no expense spared park that is trying to Clearysteel a lot of Disney fan base and if they continue on this path will be a secondary park in Florida.
I’m seeing a lot of comments on here about “cancel culture”, but I’m wondering why that has anything to do with anything? Unless you are Polynesian, you have no business making negative comments. Do I think these things are dated, yes I do. Do I think they could be offensive, yes I do. Do I think they should be removed from Disney, well…that’s not my call. If everything that was offensive to every culture were removed from society, well…there wouldn’t be much there. I am not one to complain about things like this, because I am unaffected. If it’s removed, I understand. If it stays, I also understand. I am of Swedish descent , well partially at least, and not once have I complained about removing the Swedish Chef from Muppetvision. I am also of Italian descent, I have no issue with Rizzo’s Pizzeria. It perception that needs to change. Sometimes funny things are offensive, but they are only meant to be funny. Almost everyone laughs a little bit when someone loses their balance and falls funnily. We don’t mean it, it just happens. We are taking pleasure from them getting injured, because most of the time they aren’t hurt. When someone does get hurt, obviously our laughter subsides. We need to understand, as a society, not everyone sees everything the same way. Culture in the U.S. is extremely blended. Most U.S. culture is actually European culture, but I’ve never heard the Brits tell us to stop speaking English. Never heard them say, you can’t play soccer…that’s a European sport. Never heard any Italians say, no more gnocchi in the U.S., that’s ours. It’s not cultural appropriation, when you’ve already melded that culture into your own. Hawaiians, Samoans, and Fijians are all Americans. Why is this forgotten? Therefore, their culture is American culture. Just like Native American culture should be considered American culture (it’s actually the original American culture, but I don’t want to split hairs here). If we truly are an inclusive nation, then how is using something (that as someone mentioned, no need person of Polynesian descent complained about) that represents people living in America, that are American citizens cultural appropriation? We, as a people, have to stop being offended so easily. It serves no purpose and it further divides us. I spent my entire childhood hearing what are no termed as “culturally offensive” jokes, but I never took offense to them. They are words in a book or coming from someone’s mouth, that’s it. We all told them and no one took offense. We’re all losing sight of what’s important here, no one people is that much more important than another. That, and if you want to be an American…your culture becomes a part of ours. Now, how about that Tiana animatronic? That is what is missing from so many other recent Disney attractions. This is what has been missing from Disney for quite some time. A commitment to excellence. I had to end it on a good note. Oh, and hats off to that Veteran. I looked back and realized that it was him answering my comments on the original video.
I feel like the Bayou Adventure story will be lack luster, but if the shows scenes are beautiful and music is good, then I think it’ll still be a fun ride. But it’s still unfathomable to me that the climax of the ride isn’t mamma Odie saving you from “Friends on the other side.” Bring back Dr. F as a ghost!
3:30 except that “mural” on the yellow wall by the outside queue where some of its good and some of it…. weeeell not so much (it’s BAD). 19:35 hmmm… it sounds like they’re gonna be using something like an NFT to do that functionality. 22:48 maybe I don’t understand fully but it sounded like he made a design, worked with a company to finalize it, had them make a prototype/sellable version for Disney to look at, and then because of a higher-up’s quote, “…not so secret black/gay agenda” rejected the design of a “TIKI MUG” with a TIKI MASK on it. I just think that’s kinda dumb like having Cinderella based merch without anything related to Cinderella on it or handing someone a white chocolate bar when they asked for a regular one it’s TECHNICALLY right but it’s not what the kind of person who would buy that stuff would end up buying SINCE it doesn’t took like the thing they like.
It is ridiculous. We need to buy all these sensitive people helmets. Seriously the tiki gods will be very angered by this. They need to talk to the actual community Polynesians they would think it’s great. My brother who’s lived in Hawaii for 30 years would find this to be hilarious they make more tiki mugs over there and then you can imagine.
Tiana's Bayou Adventure will ultimately fall well below the popularity of Splash Mountain because the storyline is lame and they excluded Doctor Facilier - and "Friends on the Other Side" was the only good song in the film; the rest is forgettable or generic jazz with Louis. 🎶📯🐊
If they are going to start getting rid of cultural “appreciation” then they need to remove air’s a small world: racist stereotypes, exploiting children ( because the characters are all children) and they need to remove world showcase at Epcot and stop the food and wine festival.
Tiana is utterly beautiful. I love that animatronic and how cute and cartoonish it is. Tiana is such an underrated princess and the film deserves more love than it gets too. Love it.
From 100 animatronic figures to 17, even though they are the best of animatronics, is that good? I haven't heard about dozens of animatronics. From what I hear they are not using the music from the movie, they wrote their own score for the ride. I truly hope you are right!
The fall in river story sounds like a man who was not happy that a cast member followed policy and told him what to do & then faked fall into river knowing that he would not drown only to prove a point. Surprised that with liability concerns Disney does not shut this attraction down.

There's a big difference between cultural sensitivity and trying to rewrite history.
I totally agree. And that is why Universal is eating Disney’s lunch right now. They are all about entertaining their guest and giving them what they want. If it’s offends 1 person out of 1,000 that aren’t going to care.
What have they built that could even be deemed offensive? It’s all based on cartoons filled with fart noises or ancient creatures.

……SHAG can do whatever he wants!! Disney was LUCKY to have him!! He doesn’t need Disney!! His Palm Springs, and Las Vegas galleries are ALWAYS packed!!!
Then there isn't really a problem, is there?
And betrays any sense of wanting to run a successful business!
Solidarity and good luck to the 1700 workers of Magic United in Anaheim!! Hope they join Equity and get a good contract! 🐭🎭
That HM CM sounds like a peach. As in a butt.
but but- safety SHOULD be their responsibility, you're the GUEST... present day CM's and Disney culture is one of 'not my problem, not getting involved any more than i have to'.. there was a point in time Disney listened to the guest, and actively wanted to help them and make them feel comfortable and give them the best possible experience.
Don't go on th ride then snowflake
Was that at WDW or Disneyland? At Disneyland you can skip the stretching room and go in through the accessible access on the left side of the Mansion.
As a cm at magic Kingdom park ask to speak to a supervisor. Or ask to use the chicken exit.
I’m glad shag is still making the mugs. The people that love the tiki room would love to buy these mugs. They look great so if Disney is too sensitive to sell them someone else should.
I recall meeting Shag at an exhibition, where I observed that he becomes upset when confronted about cultural appropriation.
Looking forward to Tiana's!!! So happy they didnt use screen faces.
15:10 One Man’s Dream is well made, but it needs to be remastered for the upgraded theater/projection equipment and preserved for future guests.
I was so worried they were gonna do the awful projected faces of the Epcot Frozen ride but it seems they learned from their mistakes.
Disney should focus on accessibility features in their attractions before removing ladies and gentleman from spiels and getting rid of things for cultural appropriation
100%
I don't think it needs to be an either/or. There's no reason they can't work on being more inclusive of gender, culture, AND disability.
Disney can do both.
A tiki mug doesn’t exclude anybody
This has been going on for years 🤷♀️
I am a huge Shag fan. Those Shag mugs are very much in line with Trader Sam's. Shame on Disney for bowing to cancel culture.
My guy, you literally just described cultural appropriation, lmfao
I'm waiting to hear an opening date for Tiana's to book my Disneyland trip later this year. Hopefully it'll be opened by Oct/November
Or maybe just not get on a ride knowing full well that he has a problem? Sooooo tired of people not taking responsibility for themselves...

It’s so refreshing to watch your monologue. Keep up the good work.
Does anyone know why they chose not to tell the original story of Princess and the Frog? I love the movie and would have loved to go through the story.
I think they just felt that the layout of the ride didn't fit that story well enough.
Because it’s controversial (the voodoo). They “fixed” the “controversial” ride with another controversial one?
I hate modern Disney…canceling a mug is absolutely ridiculous
I have noticed you (Tom) more upbeat since your announcement that WDWNT & Disney have made amends. I have also noticed that you’re still honest in your reviews but your delivery of criticism is softer than before. I have also noticed that you give credit to Disney where credit is due - just like you always have. 💙
I mean, part of that is probably several changes in my personal life. I’ve been in a bad place for a long time, starting to come out of that the last few months.
@@WDWNT I’m glad to hear that! & it definitely shows!
Gertie isn’t a Disney character they own, it’s public domain
We noticed last September that there were some maintenance that improved the scenes in the 3 caballeros and a few other attractions while there.

Gertie's public domain (1914). And their other designs would full under fair use - parody (fonts aren't copyrightable). Though it is a valid criticism on if they're crossing that line on a lot of their designs.
@@KhurtKhave669 Winsor McKay’s Gertie is. That Gertie with the snow on her is Disney’s.
You can’t copyright a public domain character
@@MonsterKidCorySo where is Disney’s copyright of the Gertie in HS?
From what I remember, Rolly Crump basically invented the representations of the 'tiki gods' in the attraction based on a couple of books from the library and a whole lot of 'Rolliness', because the task got dropped in his lap on a short timeline. They aren't even close to accurate and that's basically on purpose.
A lot of them were actually designed by Marc Davis
If Disney doesn't want it why can't he sell it? How many companies sell Disney inspired products? I've seen you sell Disney inspired products
Gertie isn’t a Disney character bro
Shag has an established relationship with Disney. He may have made that design on Disney’s dime. Even if he didn’t, doing what he did was going against Disney’s wishes; they didn’t want the mug released. He knew that and went around them anyway. Even if he didn’t do anything illegal, Disney can still be upset, which could threaten their relationship. It’s not just about legal vs. illegal.
Glad to see more cast members unionizing!
I know the situation is complex, but I just don't see how a Tiki mug is more cultural appropriation than making Moana 2 in Canada. 😂
To me it looks like a somewhat thinner Winfrey in a Jungle Cruise skipper costume.

I hope SHAG takes his designs over to Universal and starts working with them!
i think they should sell the mug
My favorite part about criticizing Shag for selling something based on Disney IP is that it comes RIGHT before pushing the Gertie the Dinosaur IP and the Park Candy commercial. Hilarious.
Will Anika Noni Rose be doing Tiana's voice for the animatronic?
Yes. She and several other actors and actresses will reprise their roles for the attraction.
Where do I get that awesome Gertie plush?
Tom don’t worry about the sell out comments. It’s great you’re back on the media list. If anything that’s a sign things *are* improving. You’re allowed to like the new animatronics. Tiana is way more refined that the Little Mermaid ride ones were (oh the whip cream hair…). Your coverage has always been fair in my eyes and continues to be.
Poor guy. There should be safety updates to the rafts. Glad they are updating Hollywood Studios for its upcoming important 35th anniversary.

It has something to do with reselling. I guess in Florida there was a way to buy bulk tickets for corporate events at a discount and then resell them for profit. Disney is using blockchain tech to try and stop the ability to reassign those tickets.

I agree with Tom. Tiana looks amazing. I just want good audio animatronics. That, to me, is Disney⭐️
This is what has been missing from
Disney for quite some time. A commitment to excellence.
I had to end it on a good note. Oh, and hats off to that Veteran. I looked back and realized that it was him answering my comments on the original video.
Do you have any updates on the road construction that the county is doing on Floriday Way- by the Polynesian resort?
Can’t wait to see the update to splash. The animatronic is amazing.

Tom, You’re doing a good job They are getting back to quality (based on the look of the Tiana, ) Therefore ur critique seems honest.
Tiana's Bayou Adventure will ultimately fall well below the popularity of Splash Mountain because the storyline is lame and they excluded Doctor Facilier - and "Friends on the Other Side" was the only good song in the film; the rest is forgettable or generic jazz with Louis. 🎶📯🐊
The Tiana animatronic does not look like Tiana.
Tom. Unless the Tiki mugs have been copyrighted, someone could make them. Just like you are making a Gertie plush.
Gertie isn’t a Disney character, it’s public domain also
I am so ready for this!
If they are going to start getting rid of cultural “appreciation” then they need to remove air’s a small world: racist stereotypes, exploiting children ( because the characters are all children) and they need to remove world showcase at Epcot and stop the food and wine festival.
As much as I don't want to let the memories of Splash go, hoping that this new version really impresses me.
Tiana is utterly beautiful. I love that animatronic and how cute and cartoonish it is. Tiana is such an underrated princess and the film deserves more love than it gets too. Love it.
if only they didn't dress her like she works for United Airlines....
From 100 animatronic figures to 17, even though they are the best of animatronics, is that good? I haven't heard about dozens of animatronics. From what I hear they are not using the music from the movie, they wrote their own score for the ride. I truly hope you are right!
Just a matter of time before the Tiki room itself is taken away
Tiana does not look like the character. I believe it is a repurposed animatronic, where they changed the skin color, nose, and hair.
The fall in river story sounds like a man who was not happy that a cast member followed policy and told him what to do & then faked fall into river knowing that he would not drown only to prove a point. Surprised that with liability concerns Disney does not shut this attraction down.
I guess Tom is now a pixie duster after Disney’s delivered an olive branch (an envelope 💵) lmao
Yeah but still hate the new cabins, makes sense 🤪
