    The 90 degree arm swing is the common ideal running approach, but really natural form is the most important. I’ve noticed even elite runners have much less than 90 degree same angle but they all have a relatively straight forward back motion elbow back in a nice v shape.

    I love your videos and training tips! Not only a newbie but Back at running after taking a break for too long and I’m having trouble progressing in any stamina. It confuses me that I have to “change” my “natural” form to get my arms to swing more! I’m so “statuesque” when running. I hardly move my arms at all in my natural form. Is this normal or do most people have to really concentrate or train your mind and body to swing your arms and relax your shoulders yet stay straight...????. It all seems so complicated. I was told when I first started not to try to change my natural form of running but if I do that I’m going to keep walking after a 3/4 mile and not getting anywhere slowly! I really enjoyed running before but I feel like I lost everything . Granted...I am very out of shape and do realize that getting back will take time but any tips as far as arm swing, breathing (cause I hold my breath) and can’t figure out how to breathe from my stomach and picking up my feet. I feel like I barely lift my feet. I will start doing these arm swing exercises. Thanks so much for your tips and sorry this was so long! 🙄

    I followed this advice a couple of years ago, but I've been watching Eliud Kipchoge run, and he seems to bring his hand close across his chest rather than what's demonstrated here. I find Eliud's style more comfortable and efficient, but I wonder if this is just personal preference or if there is scientific data behind the recommended form.

    What do you do if you can't keep the arm swing up to speed with your cadence?
    My arms swing is high, I hold my shoulder a bit high and tense, but if I lower them and open the angle of my arm and the angle of my swing I lose sync with the cadence.

    I do disagree a little bit I keep my hand as close as i can to my heart. And I don’t try to move them forward but side to side. The reason is to focus my center of mass. If I’d use your technique my foot might not land right under my body but in front of it. That would make me exert more power that it would tire me.

    • @findsumrun

      That does generically create tension but if it works for you, then it works!

    I've been wondering if for arm swing - should the arms stay mostly at a 90 degree angle or do your forearms swing up with each swing (almost puling momentum upwards? - if that makes sense). Sometimes I find myself doing either way and they both feel very different though it's hard to tell if one way is more efficient.

    • @devohnmitchell
      @devohnmitchell Рік тому

      Most Elite Runners arms are way less than a 90 degrees angle. It's more like a 30 - 45 degress angle.

    how to stop twisting body when running..

    • @TheRunExperience
      @TheRunExperience  6 років тому

      Hey Chandan, a lot of torso movement can be an expression downstream from arm movement. Check out our video "Arm Swing drill for better beginner running form." You can also do similar time drills with your hands out in front of you, linked together while running in place. By doing this you can really get an idea of how much your torso moves. You can then progress to another drill with your arms locked behind your back, running in place, trying to keep your torso from twisting side to side. Hope this helps!
