It's because now days generation only care about catchy hooks and upbeat melodies. They usually don't listen to the lyrics and that's why top-40 hits do so well. Listen to the melodic synthy-esque section of the original song. It's catchy and repetitive. That alone will create a hit. Suprised Mike decided to use such deep lyrics, considering many people don't even listen to them.

By the time he was done, hundreds of kids from the daydrink were gathered around, and listening from porches, he cried and said he’d been doing a college tour at big unis, and no more than like 20 people had ever shown up, he thanked them and hung out for the rest of the daydrink. I love the ending, it's so much, but there's an acknowledgement that he's just an entertainer, like any other artist, just doing his "gigs" and offering his services, and at the same time, it's an acknowledgement of his own journey, knowing how easily people will forget him and he'll be "that guy" that had his time in the light and now has to do party gigs
